Dating Stories

Being a Jehovah's Witness, dating was definitely a challenge. I will share some stories I remember from dating my now husband as a regular pioneer who was made to feel like every choice I made was wrong. Jealous and overbearing family members also made it difficult to even begin dating or having interest in anyone.

    I am glad that the Watchtower Society/Jehovah's Witnesses are having to undergo scrutiny by the state of New Zealand because of the scandalous sexual abuse against children in their congregations over the years. They ought to realize that they are no more exempt from state scrutiny than other institutions with children entrusted to their care. Thank you for this latest update on Jehovah's Witnesses.

    I can relate. I was dating an Elder's daughter (we were both 18). He was ultimately the reason we broke up. The one time we ever did anything more than kiss, he told me he felt like punching me in the face. Admittedly, I only dropped her back home at 2am. We went to a drive-in, with a chaperone. Straight after I took the chaperone home, the girlfriend and I got a bit naughty in the car. Elder dad had it in for me after that. And yet he was quite happy with his younger daughter being groomed (from the age of 15) by a 23-year-old Ministerial Servant. Oh, and I almost forgot: Elder dad must have arranged a marking talk (even though I didn't even know that was a thing). In retrospect, I think I had three marking talks. Funny. 😄

    Dating as a JW....not for the faint of heart! 😂 When I was dating my hub, there was this nosey sister who would not stop calling and texting me until I told her the details of my wedding plans. She had never shown that much interest in me b4 🙄 The night after she called me, we had a circuit assembly. All these sisters kept coming up to me, talking about all my wedding plans. Since Sister Nosey was the only person I had told these things to, I knew she had immediately gossiped to a bunch of sisters about them. Ugh.

  • @OlafMetal

    Oh man JW dating. It was awful. I had two girls in my immediate relative vicinity that were "eligible" and one of them I did end up dating. She was a very nice girl and I still think fondly of her even though she probably doesn't think much of me anymore. I liked her well enough but from the moment we were baptized the congregation had their eyes on us. Watching like a pair of pandas to see if we would mate and step in accordingly. I was conflicted about her. We got along and had similar interests, and I did think she was pretty. I could have seen myself marrying her and being reasonably happy but when we did try dating I began asking myself if "reasonably happy" was something I should accept. I didn't know if I was with her because I genuinely wanted to marry her or if because she was more or less just the best option available to me at the time. When you have to ask yourself that, the answer is self-evident. I broke it off with her and shortly after left the organization for several reasons. When I left, the elders went pretty hard into investigating why and I accidentally ruined her reputation in the congregation. We never did more than kiss, and I had nothing but the purest intentions for her when we were together but I think about the life I had if I had stayed. An on-the-surface perfect Christian marriage with me knowing this whole time I wasn't truly happy. I saved us both from that, but in retrospect I feel bad about the things she had to endure because of my actions.

    • @JustDeannaJune
      @JustDeannaJune Месяц назад

      You didn't do anything wrong, you actually handled the situation very well, and the organization caused what happened. They make all those JW members question ppl in ways they shouldn't and let's face it, they encourage gossip. So, you truly did NOTHING wrong! It's the JW organization that caused her to be looked at as someone with a 'reputation', not you. Don't allow them to guilt you when you don't deserve it. 😉

    • @OlafMetal
      @OlafMetal Месяц назад

      @@JustDeannaJuneYou're right, I will not accept that blame, but I can't deny that I hurt her, and the fallout of my leaving made things a lot more difficult on top of that. I would do it again a thousand times if I had to. I just think about the pain she went through and wish it wasn't so. In a more just world we could have been two young people working things out without a cult messing with our lives. I just wanted to let her down easy and move on. None of this was my fault. None of this our fault but she still got hurt, and their treatment of her was salt on the wound. I didn't leave unscathed either, but it's an unfortunate reality that the Watchtower Society's misogyny affected her in ways I wish it never had and there was no way I could have protected her from that.

    I really appreciate your channel. And you sharing your experiences. So, so sorry about your friend not seeing the importance of how much you gave to friendships and not have you in their weddings. I had a 'best friend' do the same thing! I had her in my wedding and then when she started dating a brother she met online, when a JW online dating site was all the rage about 10 years ago, and was a regular pioneer and got in huge trouble for doing so, she's from the USA and he is from Africa and it was all the gossip! I stood by her, he had to get a green card, I let him stay aty house, we chaperoned them constantly, she asked me to be in the wedding, I bought the dress that she picked and I couldn't afford. And I thru her bridal shower and then literally 2 weeks before the wedding she told me she had no brother to walk down the isle with me because her fiances literal brother couldn't come from Africa and so I couldn't be in the wedding but the other girl she asked to be in the wedding, she was keeping in it. We had known each other since birth. Our mother's are best friends to this day. The other girl in the wedding had been her friend for maybe 10 years. We had known each other for 38 years at that point. So I got a different short dress and went to the wedding and helped them get down the isle. And went to the reception and ate and left. And she was mad at me. 🤨I'm in my 50s now and was in the org for 46 years before waking up. My friends of over 40+ years have all dropped me and I'm not DFed, I mean 'removed' 🙄 or disassociated. That friend I talked about, I just saw by chance 4 days ago at an arena for a sporting event with over 10,000 ppl there, on a ladies room! What are the chances!!! She looked straight at me. Straight in the eyes. She was helping her daughter find a bathroom stall to go into. She looked at me and then just went about her business as if she saw no one. This organization teaches conditional love. Friendship isn't real. I have found some actual friends in the last 5 years since leaving. I've also realized that having tons of friends is not necessary or healthy quite honestly. I had almost 250 ppl at my wedding. I'm very outgoing and friendly, but that doesn't mean I need to have THAT many 'friends'. A handful is plenty. The organization also teaches ppl to be intrusive and to gossip and tattle on one another. All extremely unhealthy!!! I'm more cautious about who I bring into my inner circle now but am still friendly to everyone. I wish you all the best with life and your channel! I'm a new subscriber! I have a channel as well, it can be fun and also challenging, if you ever need to talk, reach out: justjune1973@gmail.com 😉

    JW friendships are wierd. The org actively stunts feelings & is ruinous to friendship. Your stories remind me of an old JW friendship. The family that brought my family in. They had 9 boys, & called me their daughter. We were at their home a minimum of twice a week. I was best friends with one of their kids & my little brother was best friends with another of their kids. I knew them for the 1st 15 1/2 yrs of my life. We moved away. They had our address & phone number. I never heard from them again! Wow! Guess they really cared. My mom got a little news thru the grapevine & maybe shared a phone call or 2 over the yrs, but...there was apparently no interest in the people they brought in. I was hurt, but that was 50 yrs ago.

    Absolutely like my experience, that even happens inside so called family if they are JW.dubs. I consider the removal and absence of festivals, who you usually enjoy together with friends and family (installed very early by that villain Rutherford) , as a disocialization process. Rutherford used a psychology trick to make all kinds of relationships blurry and superficial. Otherwise disfellowshipping (now called removal) would not work.

      The fact of the matter is there is not enough valid information to show that these abuse cases are not happening within the Jehovah’s Witnesses, my friend. It has nothing to do with other organizations we recognize that abuse happens in any organization. So I’m not really sure what the purpose of your comment was, but the fact of the matter is Jehovah’s Witnesses have been successfully evading the discipline that is the problem, their evading discipline from states and their evading discipline from countries that is the issue at hand and that is why it is so important to talk about and make people aware of it. If we didn’t talk about it, you wouldn’t even know this was happening because it’s happening in New Zealand. It’s also happening in Australiaare finally witnesses for abuse that is taking place and they actually have a folder that they keep hidden from the rest of the congregation and it is not disclosed that there are child abusers in the congregation happens worldwide that’s the problem and it needs to be known ✌🏻

Then I stumbled upon something about the organization that I didn’t align with which was a sensitive topic for me in my life and decided to stop studying kind of abruptly. I was hoping I could stay in touch with all the new “friends” I made along my study journey but I was dropped instantly and have lost all communication with them :( I really saddens me because I thought I connect with them after spending time with them outside of the meetings and conventions I attended with them often but once I stopped studying, it was all gone. Lou I love your channel, keep up the good work. One of the most potent parts of JW CULTure is the social structure that will be lost when someone decides to leave, you even touched on it in your video here. The guilt of letting friends and family down because you no longer think like they do. The thought that if I leave I will disappoint so many, what will they say about me, all of this plays into why the younger generation does not leave. In most cases, they dont know why they believe what they do, they just believe it because their mom, dad, brother, sister, uncle, grandmother and so on believe it. They dont need to make sense of it because their parents or grandparents already made sense of it and if its good enough for them, its good enough for me. IMO, this is the reason why most of the younger generation stay. I think that teens and those still living at home have other reasons as do those that have been in the organization for decades and getting up in years also stay for different reasons.
