Integra Type S DE5 Driver Coaching Virginia International Raceway
I was invited out to VIR (Virginia International Raceway) to provide some coaching to my buddy Tim! Such a rewarding experience! He's currently at the solo/intermediate level and was looking for some tips and tricks to get around the track faster! We ran into a number of snags, but still saw improvement! I'd say we made some great progress for only having 3 sessions! Session 1 was wet, 2 was filled with traffic, and 3 unfortunately ended with a bad car wreck! I'll say this again, and I've said it many times before...BUY A HANS DEVICE AND BUY TRACK INSURANCE! The driver and passenger of the wrecked vehicle survived because they were wearing HANS devices!

Installing the PRL Charge Pipes and PRL Intercooler! FL5 Civic Type R Track Aftermath!
I use castrol products for everything.
Hey buddy, it was a blast. Give us another day and I'll make some real progress. Appreciate the advice and you putting the vid together. What a fun day. Chris already has the motor out of the car and is going to ship out the abs module to a crash investigator. He said a bunch of parts survived the crash. He's doing fine other than a little sore here and there.
Typically instructors get 8 sessions with their students, so I'm pleased with the improvement after having only 3 sessions. Remember our first session was only 4 laps because of crash delays, 2nd session was botched by traffic, and the third ended early. I'm interested to find out what the crash investigator says about the ABS module because there should have been bells and whistles going off in the car indicating a problem!
This is amazing information for me i can't wait until i can get out to the track for the first time its a dream of mine I'm 24 so i have plenty of time to make it happen but i have to take care of my family first but this is the end goal for me. Thanks for letting me live my dream through you it really looks amazing 🙏
Good stuff! Great being patient in traffic, there was a lot of traffic out there! Excellent pointers given to the driver. Its also always fun showing folks what brakes can really do on track lol, usually the most impressive aspect! I wonder what happened to have that red car to lock up straight into the IMSA barrier at top of rollercoaster like that? Surely it was an ABS car, those were some long 11's laid down!
Thanks man! In many ways the brakes are more important than the accelerator! Master the brakes, and you master the lap! We aren't 100% sure what happened to Chris' car. We think his ABS module failed. The flat spots on the tires were gnarly! I had ridden with him earlier in the day, and he was a very consistent driver, and dropped the anchor at the same marker every single time without any hint of a mechanical hiccough.
What Toe out are you running in front? I recently moved to 1mm toe out, it greatly improved, and now 5mm toe out, it’s an absolute oversteer animal. What were your running during this crash?
@@3dprinteros I was running zero toe if I remember correctly.
I think it's still easier and faster from the bottom
Thanks for the great channel ........ I value your videos beyond belief Sir ............ ;-)
Thanks for the video! Are you considering coilovers, or are you pretty happy with the stock suspension?
@@mogradme8535 I drool over a set of the KW V3's, but that opens up a whole new can of worms. Suspension tuning is tough stuff!
@pointbypatrol This is precisely where I'm at lol. I'm pretty sure I want to go with the KW's, but it's a pretty big commitment and I still benefit more from seat time than anything else (so trying to dial-in suspension during track days instead of digesting/analyzing my own driving is probably not the best use of my time)
@@mogradme8535 there are so many adjustments when you move over to coilovers. I'd have to read books to get it right, and it's a painstakingly time consuming undertaking!
The 284-298 oil temps are pretty hot. Is the dash correct? Are the upgrades helping at all? How did you get a 230 degree reading? Didn't quite understand
@@3dprinteros The higher temps in the video occurred when I wasn't running the heater in the car. Running the heater makes a big difference!
Doesn't PWR have a tune and fin intercooler for the FL5? edit: HKS has one too.
@@boblast5582 HKS and J's racing have one. The J's is 2 grand, which is crazy high. PWR hasn't released their offering IIRC. I'm waiting for another option to come to market, so this intercooler is just temporary.
@@pointbypatrol I saw either the HKS for a hair under 1400 when googling this last night… still absurd for an intercooler. Also saw the PWR for 2k (not sure if that’s USD or AUD) on their Australian website, looks to be complete.
@@pointbypatrollook into the Wagner intercooler, some testing has already been documented on civicxi. This is definitely what I'll be getting. Cheers
I'm in a DE5 and I hear a low hum/whine after my install. Did you get that too?
@@Hind135 Yes. You are hearing noise reverberating from the oil pump. Completely safe!
Bought this exhaust slightly used, any thoughts on if I can reuse the gaskets or would I need all new ones?
@@vincentnguyen353 are the gaskets still in good shape?
@@pointbypatrolsorry I didn’t realize u responded , but they seemed like they were fine but I wanted the peace of mind so I bought new replacement gaskets from remarks website. Thanks!!

@@TampaDE5 Not that I'm aware of
I accidentally grind the gears from 1st to 2nd. Should I change the fluid to ensure no shaving metal is in there?
It certainly wouldn't be a bad idea, but I'd imagine you're probably okay
Do you have the clutch delay valve still in place? Your shifts are nice and quick.
@@noo_2jz it's still installed, but I'd like to remove it.
Did you have brake vectoring on, and traction control - or were you fully disabled with the pedal dance?
@@3dprinteros This was +R with the long hold.
@@pointbypatrol Thanks, I'll keep the traction nannies on. Do you think that would have helped?
@@3dprinteros No. Not in this situation. I've had the nannies activate when there was no danger and caused peril when nothing was going wrong. This crash was a unique situation.
It seams like blasting the heat pretty much solves the ECT issues… so a solution can be to get an aux radiator roughly the size of the heater core (maybe a little bigger for fun) and stick a good fan on it. It doesn’t have to be in the path of airflow with the fan and all…
@@boblast5582 exactly!
I like your honesty about the pedal dance
It was definitely eye opening, and the wheel spin was insane. Never knew the agile assist helped control the wheel spin. I was going through turn 1 and was like...."Why the heck am I blowing the tires off of this thing???" Had to be really careful with throttle modulation for the rest of the session!
Funny how you are always breaking down...totaling fl5s I think you should do something else.
Where’s your track footage? Takes some balls to put something like that out there and admit to a mistake.
what radiator?
Gotta wait for the green light from the manufacturer! It's killing me not to be able to tell you guys!
You didn’t have to take off the bumper to change the radiator like in your other video? Thank you!
@@Dat.FL5 No. You don't need to remove it for a radiator install. I haven't pulled the bumper on this car yet. Waiting on intercooler before I yank it off!
@@pointbypatrolthank you sir! Just wondering because I saw the PWR radiator install video and the bumper had to come off, which I want to avoid.
@@Dat.FL5 I know more now than I did then. There are small covers on the bottom of the splash shield that give you access to the lower condenser bolts. Makes life so much easier than having to remove the bumper!
@@pointbypatrol thank you so much!! This would save me so much time and broken bumper clips!!
Damn, its a huge difference with heat on high
@@oficina_moomoo yep.....it's the only way to go, unfortunately. Prepare for your left leg to cook!
Melt down factory rad??? 😂😂😂 Honda must not have done their job. Funny how factory race teams use stock rad just fine 😂
@@ovdman Those vehicles have several modifications to aid with cooling that the bone stock car doesn't have.
Just do the pedal dance already lol!! I get you though, the rear end becomes very unstable under hard breaking when all the nannie’s are off and it takes time to feel comfortable with it.
@@Club-Version mine was more of just burning out mid-corner
I was doing a datalog for @JesterTuned today so I did the long push on the traction control. I ve never driven with it off and I was coming up to a stoplight that I wanted to turn right at. The light turned yellow so naturally I floored it and whipped around the corner not expecting my cars ass to swing around like an 80's movie police chase crown vic😂.
@@brhardi48326 hahahaha! Epic!
pedal dance is so overrated - nothing to do with unstable under hard braking -- it just doesn't rotate as well, and most of the extra power on tap turns into wheel spin. It's not a nanny -- it's not saving you from doing anything stupid. It just makes the car perform better.
Still crushing it buddy! Appreciate the content.
Good ish as always. Thank you for posting!
Thanks ish! ;)
@@pointbypatrol high five, dammit I knew someone would do that. Just not you. Whyyyyyyy!!!!!!!
Does it throw a code installing the downpipe?
@@juanmoreno4992 on the factory map, yes. With a tune, no.
Did you feel a difference in power from a the TSP catted downpipe you had on your previous FL5 to this Innovatig catless downpipe?
Hard to say really since I had a full exhaust on the white car. I can tell that it spools up a bit quicker. I think it'll be most noticeable when I get a full exhaust sytem.
How hard was it to remove the oem studs for the titanium ones? And what method did you use? Downpipe and midpipe will be here over the weekend and will replace the studs for titanium ones as well.
@@PR1M3L4B It was a brand new turbo and cylinder head, so I didn't need to remove the studs. One of the studs on the old turbo snapped during removal, which was crazy for a car with 2,000 miles on it.

Does the overflow bolt washer need to be replaced too? I know the fill and drain does. What about the overflow?
@@ElusiveAura My professional answer is yes. My actual answer is no, not really. I reused mine and had zero problems with leakage. I only change it out once every other exchange.
@@pointbypatrol thank you. I should have asked initially but when you do change the overflow washer out, is it a different size from the fill/drain?
@@ElusiveAura yes it's much smaller
@@pointbypatrol you wouldn’t happen to know part # on that overfill washer would you? My parts guy at Honda trying to tell me it’s same washer size as drain and fill but you said it’s smaller.

How is the stock Honda synthetic 0w-20 oil for regular driving? I have 3 dealer-covered oil changes.

I've got an event coming up in a few weeks, so I'll put it to the test then. Using 100% factory coolant for the test. Only downside for the test is that ambient temps will be lower as the season begins to shift.
@@pointbypatrol yeah good point, we call it turbo weather 😆

Innovatig parts are the best
Sounds great! The Cup 2’s are probably causing most of the traction issues 😅. Very average tire. I just ran Nankang CRS’s at my first track day and absolutely loved them.
@@ThomasTwomey these cup 2's are fairly shot too!
Nice review! Think you sold me on this downpipe especially since it’s pretty much the only catless downpipe available for our car lol..I’m tuned through Jester as well. Did he revise your tune after the downpipe install or did you just leave it alone?
@@S2kRJon He revised it. It's getting so much air volume that it's blowing out the spark. So I need to re-gap the plugs and send him another datalog!
@@pointbypatrol interesting to hear that! You also have a built bottom end and bigger turbo right? Do you think that is contributing to that problem? I’m basically stock aside from an intake and tune so curious if I add this downpipe if I would run into the same issue
If I had a Civic type r I would change out the downpipe immediately 🦘
Pros know rear caliper banjo bolt must be torqued 24 lbs ft. Pros use 90 deg angled HEL front brake lines so they have zero chance rubbing smaller 18" track wheels. Use proper pump with 20 psi at reservoir to not introduce bubbles from reservoir.
