The Gornergrat is your excursion destination in Zermatt! The cogwheel railway takes you from the village at 1600 metres up to 3100 metres above sea level. The journey alone is an experience with a constant view of the Matterhorn. Hardly anyone can get enough of the panorama at the top: Mountains and glaciers as far as the eye can see.
Meet the sheep
Do you know the famous, blacknose sheep from the Valais? Their spiral horns, black spots and especially their soft fur are unique. Around 125 blacknose sheep graze on the Gornergrat during summer and like to stay where it is shady, as their fuzzy fur makes it too hot for them in the sun. But no matter where they are on the mountain, as soon as the black-nosed sheep move into the Gornergrat area, you have the chance to visit them in the wild. You can find the woolly sheep using GPS localisation.

Ongelooflijk mooi.....
Ursprünglich war ja geplant die 250 m Streckenlänge oberhalb von Riffelboden bis zum Beginn der Gallerie zweigleisig auszubauen, also von Streckenkilometer 5,1 bis Streckenkilometer 5,35 damit man im Hochsommer den schwer merkbaren 24-Minuten-Takt durch einen einfachen 20-Minuten-Takt ersetzen kann. Wird, da die neuen Züge jetzt etwas schneller fahren, der 20-Minuten-Takt bereits im Sommer 2023 gefahren? Ist trotz der neuen Züge weiterhin der zweigleisige Ausbau zwischen Streckenkilometer 5,1 und 5,35 geplant, um beim 20-Minuten-Takt über Infrastrukturreserven zu verfügen?
Hallo Thomas, vorgesehen war, dank der neuen Fahrzeuge den 20min Takt einzuführen ohne weitergehende Infrastrukturmassnahmen. Eine Abhängigkeit mit einer Doppelspurverlängerung im Riffelboden war dabei nicht gegeben. Auf die Einführung des 20min Taktes wird nun aber auch mit den neuen Fahrzeugen vorerst verzichtet. Prioritär wird mit den neuen Fahrzeugen dank höherer Fahrgeschwindigkeit die Betriebsstabilität erhöht. Nach Umsetzung weiterer Massnahmen ist ein Übergang zum 20min Takt zu späterem Zeitpunkt denkbar.
