Where would you put the tent? Hope not crazy and to put it by bears

Hi Anina... Jesse AGAIN! LOL!!! I HOPE NOBODY takes you seriously about the little whistle on your pack as being intended for BEAR ENCOUNTERS!!! They are NOT! They are intended to signal other humans to your location if you are lost, you need help, rescue, or to get someone's attention. Ok? I'm just saying! And I HOPE YOU don't expect that whistle to save you from a bear either! I want to give you some serious advice and encouragement to look into getting yourself a canister of "BEAR SPRAY" specifically designed and manufactured to deter aggressive bears. True you COULD perhaps blow on the little whistle occasionally in the field where there's low visibility to alert any unseen bears that you are in their vicinity. But then your chest harness strap would not hold your pack as designed. But in an emergency, you at least wouldn't startle a bear unexpectedly and cause an aggressive/violent response from the bear. Usually in such a scenario you're generally advised to sing, talk loudly, or even holler out as you go so any bear(s) in your vicinity knows you're coming before you get there. Tho they have a GREAT sense of smell. And most usually will smell you coming from a great distance, even a mile or more depending on the wind direction and avoid you unless they're starving or focused on their cubs or something like that. Also consider a firearm for protection if you're adventuring in wild bear areas. And ESPECIALLY ALONE! Be safe out there Anina!!!

Hi Anina. I bought a special edition REI Half Dome 2+ 7-8 years ago. It's STILL in great shape. I use the footprint and take good care of my gear. And this my go to tent for solo or camping/hiking with my girl. All the gear fits in the tent or vestibules if needed. I had a surgery in 2019, then the Pandemic hit. So I missed a few seasons of getting out. Last year I went to set it up to check all my gear before my first upcoming outing, and the shock cord in the poles had deteriorated and turned to dry dust and the rubber in the cord was like tacky gum! LOL!!! I had to figure out how to replace the shock cord in the poles. Which I did. A new and satisfying experience. And good skill to know. One thing that caught my attention in your vid is that you mentioned the poles are magnetic?!!? I looked at the REI product description and saw no mention of the feature. And you didn't demonstrate that when setting up the tent on your vid. I s'pose I can CALL REI and ask about that. Interesting... So my tent is still doing great. by this coming spring I intend to finally recoat the floor, seams and rainfly with a couple coatings of DWR. And it should hold up for years to come. Mine is not the light style. It's more heavier and durable denier fabrics and a little bigger. 96"x56" I believe. So a little less than 1lb heavier than yours. I have seen a few newer tents that have come on the market in recent years that are VERY affordable AND have GREAT reviews from reliable reviewers on utube. But I've held off so far from making that investment since my REI Half Dome seems to be going strong. And without some unexpected misfortune it should continue to last and serve me well for years to come. This tent AND REI get a little bashed on in the forums. But I've always been satisfied with their products in comparison with other much more expensive high end name brands. Tho in recent years I've not purchased REI items or other brands thru REI as their prices are atrocious comparatively in the modern outdoor gear market. Learning my way around utube reviewers and Amazon has been absolutely satisfying and has saved me so much money!!! I regret some of the $$ I realized I've wasted at REI. I'm STILL a member, and I DO still buy sales and reduced close-out items there occasionally. But not much new anymore. Fuel canisters. Carabiners, maybe etc... ANYWAYZ, I own a similar tent and decided to check out your review. It was not too informative in general as to the specs and all. And it would've been better if you had shown your gear all set up and settled into the tent. More info about the product and less about your ADHD-Disorder!!! LOL! Also, perhaps you didn't view your video BEFORE you posted it? The reason I mention this is because the volume in your video is SO ALL OVER THE PLACE. From barely audible to SOO overbearing it hurt my ears. And it was all so disjointed and unexpected whether you would be on the original video audio or interject a post-production comment... Which seemed to be when the volume would be unbearable. So you may or may not choose to address that issue on any other posted vids in your future. I think it would help. Just some friendly advice from one REI Half Domer to another. OK? I think I seen you may have more posts, (at least ONE), VIDEOS POSTED. I MAY check it out. But I AM a little concerned about the volume issue. Either way, I appreciate your efforts. And was proud of you to see you out there enjoying your time on this earth and in the great outdoors! You kind of frightened me with your flexing tho! LOL!!! Ok, keep it up. You're doing GREAT!!!

Nice review, but you got the thicknesses wrong :) The Switchback is actually the thicker pad. It just folds into a smaller size because of the way the bumps fit together. The switchback is .9 inches thick when unfolded while the Zlite is .75 inches thick.

Going to visit Catskills this coming Labor Day weekend to take pics of all the cats.

I do no think this is the ultra light version. Plus side is this is rated at 500 lb weight capacity which is 200 lb more than the UL version. However UL weighs 2 lb 3oz and this version is 2 lb 12oz.

Try using them above an air mat. It's a warmer solution in cold conditions than if you place the foam mat under the air mat.
