Lady Faye As much as i love forests , much of the landscape featured here is blanket peat bog which is a very important habitat in itself and is worth preserving and even before forests were cut down blanket and raised bogs covered vast areas of ireland so as with deserts mans activities have caused the spread of bogs it has however a natural environment and an environment that is under huge threat due to peat over harvesting drainage and overgrazing

@@galoglaich3281 as you say yourself here, 'as with deserts, man's activities have caused the spread of bogs' and, surely, as such, cannot be considered a natural environment, man's activities, by definition, having been almost entirely unnatural.

@@ladyfaye8248 They have also caused the decline of bogs .Many areas of ireland were covered in scots pine forests shortly after the ice age and these were replaced by bogs without a single stone or bronze axe being involved the environment simply became too wet and bogs took over and the same with the raised bogs of the midlands formed by an entirely natural process.Its not an either or situation both forests and bogs are very important environments worth preserving.Bogs are a carbon sink and home to unique plants and animals and its an environment under huge threat bogs once covered 30% of the country now just 12% .When you look at this video you see a treeless landscape ,but what don't realise is that there is less heather less carnivorous plants and the land is drying out due to overgrazing. Its not really the fact they are less trees there is the problem the same mix of open bog and forests was always there as i said before single human set foot,its the fact that the forests are monocultural stands of non native sitka spruce with absolutely no diversity.Kylemore abbey there is a semi natural woodland and in some other estates nearby but generally its these dark conifer forests.

@@galoglaich3281 I do appreciate you taking the time, and putting in the effort to communicate about this and to attempt to clarify on this issue. It does seem to me that bogs have a definite place in the ecology of these isles, whereas massive acrages of pine are a false human ecology. I think we agree about that. And yes, humans have overgrazed the land for sure. (not the humans ...the sheep and their friends... not the sheeps' fault, of-course). I certainly do not advocate for the monoculture take-over, and just want to see the natural woodlands and forests return.

The johanlill we don't have mountains as high as scotland or near as many,there are many parts that are similar to the isle of skye and the scottish highlands like the five peninsulas on the south west, County donegal hills ,west county mayo,,wicklow mountains ,mourne mountains ,comeraghs. The common denominator is blanket bog and commonage(open grazing) in all these places and in scottish highlands
