I burned for years at caterpillar we had a track cutter we always had the torch up and down the head you could set at any angle you wanted had degrees on the head I always used a separate torch in front of the cutting torch at 45 degrees it looked like it had been belt sanded was called champer for welding pieces together in one 8 hour night i burned 91 hours of labor on 1.5 inch metal both sides would burn one side flip it over and the second side burned faster but I still used the torch to keep it warm we had a cutting table with a square hole in the middle with a angle slide and a drop pan worked great that was 1989 new track cutters are different now we had buttons to turn gas on and we always set the heat of torch my eye sight😊

26:05 Closing the torch operation: FIRST turn off Oxygen and then ACETYLENE( O before A). It allows you to check for leaks in the system. and it is recommended procedure in case of a malfunction. If you follow O before A shut off and you hear a pop ---> OXY valve is leaking. If there is a small flame clinging to the tip then the FUEL valve is leaking. By using O before A you get a check of the operation of the valves each time you use the torch. If you shut down A before O. you will get a pop and SOOT will be sucked back into the torch possibly clogging the gas passages.

"23:35 if there is too much heat don't adjust the pressures at the torch. CHANGE TO A SMALLER TIP" Just about every oxy welding video tells you otherwise. They say there is a range of heat adjustment you can achieve by increasing/decreasing the fuel mixture. You want to ensure the fuel pressure at the tip does not fall below a level which would see the flame sucked into the tip and torch (STARVATION of fuel) You also do not want the fuel flame to burn too far ahead of the tip (too high fuel pressure)

I thought it has but can't find it. Nice weld os stick. Not nice welding on gasless wire.. I found it far to expensive for a little toy ..

Doc. This was fascinating!!!! What if we put a single gusset in the center and then the two on the outside ? Would it be possible that the single gusset on the interior could absorb more of the shock load? Based on what I just saw I’m thinking it would help to divide the load more evenly and the outer gussets would work more efficiently. If possible could you one day do another video and try this same setup again with a single gusset in the center plus the two on the outside? James

Interested to hear your response if you had time. I'm on the fence about agreeing with your analysis. I'm an mechanical engineering technologist so my background may not be enough to satisfy an answer here but none the less I'll outline my thoughts. 1) How can we say the second joint (gussets welded outside) is stronger? - We don't have any data to backup how much force either of the joints experienced so comparison is difficult, eyeballing it I don't think is correct either. -We also saw the second joint reached and exceeded the ultimate strength of the weld, leading to failure. Perhaps in shear or in tensile. Though looking at the loading I would think transverse shear of the weld and failure from that shear stress is what occurred in joint 2. - The tubing may have not experienced any plastic deformation but we do see an overall failure of the joint at the weld. What does this say about it's integrity compared to a pound for pound comparison of joint 1? 2) Comparing the two joints we see that joint 1 did not fail but experienced plastic deformation, the tubing buckling on the face. Again we have no data for force applied but assuming they are the same in this experiment it would suggest that the first joint is stronger since it did not fail, though exceeded elastic deformation which is highly unfavorable, even worse then for joint 2. -What does this say about the joint design? If the second joint were to have a larger safety factor perhaps it wouldn't have failed, but we would need to increase the first joint proportionally to have an equal comparison. -If we are looking from a design and repair perspective perhaps not destroying the main member is the purpose of using joint 2? So disposal of gussets and replacement is more feasible, but the main member would need to be replaced regardless from the excessive stresses induced from the over loading. Anyone can feel free to chime in, great video none the less!

what color is Oxygen cylinder color, it should be black, and Acetylene should be Green. But you have shown opposite

    • @gianpocopello

that depends on what country are you refering to and standards, oxygen cylinders are painted green in most countries. Acetylene cylinders are painted red. Black is for Argon and Argon mixtures. Gray is for nitrogen. Brown for Helium. Light Blue for NO2. White for compressed air.

Hi! Thank you for very good video! I was (obviously) very lucky i saw this video! ALL THAT PARTS ARE PLASTIC..! I have Esab Rebel, and it`s parts are metal. Even side cover is quite thick metal. I stay my Esab, thank you for warning me. This Fronius is very good welder, as they say, but also Kemppi, very good and reliable welder has plastic parts inside and side cover, i can`t understand..

But look inside your ESAB, the Fronius internals (circuit layout etc) are in a different league, the plastic used in the Fronius is reinforced-almost as tough as steel, but way lighter.

You don't have to preheat mild steels or carbon steels. The cutting process is exothermic so it generates more heat than you give in to start with. Just keep the feed rate constant and let oxygen do its work.
