The Biggest Cemetery in the World and Entering Militia Controlled Samarra - Iraq Part V! 🇮🇶
In episode V of the Iraq series we finish exploring Najaf with a top view of the biggest cemetery in the world, Wadi Al-Salam, or Peace Valley. We head back to Baghdad for some chilling and evening antics on the town in the bustling Al-Mutanabbi Street, full of controversial memorabilia!
The next morning, after some market exploring and new friend making, the big journey north to old ISIS controlled territory begins, via the spiral minaret of Malwiya Mosque in militia-controlled Samarra and Saddam Hussein's home city of Tikrit.. This was my first time taking shared taxis and I had to take 3 separate taxis in the end, which I was not prepared for, but it was quite the journey!

Our journey through Mesopotamia leads us to the ruined Arch of Ctesiphon / Taq Kisra, an ancient 3rd century palace from the Sassanid Empire, followed by Babylon (no explanation needed!) including Saddam’s Palace which he built to overlook the sight, finishing the day in the holy Islamic city of Najaf. We continue to the sites north of Basra, heading to the ancient Sumerian City of Ur, believed to be one of the first established cities in the world, followed by heading to the famous Iraqi Marshlands. After these adventures we board the Basra - Baghdad night train, one of the few train lines still operating in the country!

Roman Empire Stop #3 takes us to Iraq, ancient Mesopotamia! From Kuwait to Basra we explore the streets and the corniche and make some friends along the way! The Romans were never in Basra per se, in fact the city wasn't even established until 636 CE, so we will get to the Roman bits further north in Provincia Mesopotamia :) First impressions of Iraq were amazing, and my nerves about the securi...

@@Ziizoz thank you very much 😌
During my visit to Bombay, India, in 2008, I bought many coins dating back to the era of Queen Victoria. The market was much bigger than the one you visited, but the downside was the presence of too many street hustlers and scammers. In contrast, the market you visited had a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Good job on covering a side of the story that many overlook and state-paid media outlets intentionally ignore.
Thank you very much and I know exactly what you mean which is why I left that part in despite the bad recording :D I experienced absolutely 0 hustle in the markets there, the opposite in fact, people being genuinely interested and friendly and even giving gifts as a welcome present to Iraq!

Welcome 😊

Thank you for the video. Have you been to the Vatican ? How do you compare it to the shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf ? which one do you find more spectacular? which one is more opulence in terms of the architecture and the grand feeling associated with these sites ? I'm a big fan of history, historical monuments, and holly places. The Vatical, Najaf, and Karbala are all on my wish list.
@@Gargamel-it9vh Thank you! I have indeed and it’s absolutely stunning. The Imam Ali shrine is like nothing I’ve ever seen before and very opulent indeed, although personally I prefer the architecture and renaissance paintings in the Vatican, but they are comparable for sure. You have a great wish list 😁

I from Japan, I read about Orientalism, Iraq was part of Iran's territory - everything that has history and history is from Iran - Iranians are Persians and Arabs are all without history 💢💯
Thats quite a negative statement. Mesopotamia and their civilisations and the Arabs have a huge and rich history before and alongside the Iranians
They are neither Arabs nor Persians. They are Assyrians, Babylonians, and Akkadians. The Arabs entered Mesopotamia in 637 AD.❤
@@LeonardoDaVincelli I agree that they have a rich history and they not Arabs the Babylonians - Sumserians - Assyrians were not Arabs and were a separate people and different from the Arabs. It is the oldest and oldest history of the world for Iranians
What are you even talking about? Lol! By your logic, Iran's land has been part of Iraq's land many times throughout history, like during the Babylonian Empire, Assyrian Empire, and Abbasid Caliphate. It's pretty ignorant to ignore that the oldest and greatest civilizations started in what is now Iraq, not Iran. The oldest civilization was the Sumerian civilization, which started in the South of Iraq. Also, Iranians aren't "pure" Persians, just like Iraqi Arabs aren't "pure" Arabs. Iranians are a mix of Persians with Central and South Asians (like Afghani, Pakistani, etc) while Iraqis have a diverse heritage that includes Mesopotamians like Assyrians, along with Persian, Jewish, Turkish, Peninsular Arab, and North African (Egyptian) DNA. "Arab" is a linguistic and cultural group, not a race. Most non-Peninsular Arabic speakers have little Peninsular Arab DNA. If you check DNA tests, you'll find that most Iraqis have 0-30% Peninsular Arab DNA. For example, my DNA test showed 66.3% Assyrian, 17.1% Iraqi Jew, 10.2% Peninsular Arab, and 6.4% Egyptian, yet I'm a native Arabic speaker from Iraq. People need to educate themselves. It's crazy how folks oversimplify complex historical facts just to be racist. A lot of our current practices, dishes, beliefs, words, and lifestyles go back thousands of years in Mesopotamia. So, please don't be shallow. You still have time to delete this embarrassing, biased comment.

Welcome to basra Next time text a local guy in basra so he can show you the rest of the city , you really toured like 10% of it . ( you can find them on google maps and they be more then happy to show you around for free ) And The Hotels you can find cheap 4 star hotels for like 70$ but u gotta ask the locals because they are not on any website on the internet lol I know in other places asking the locals might be difficult but in iraq it’s way deferent ! They will be smiling from ear to ear just to help out a tourist because the country and the locals hasn’t seen any tourists from 1980 since the iran war ..
Thank you! I was actually with a friend from Basra who showed me a lot but I didn’t record all of it as I was enjoying time with them, but it was great to see and eat lots of the food! The locals are indeed incredible in the whole country!
Iraq needs alot of work
Unfortunately yes but the locals told me how much it has improved in the last 5-10 years, hopefully that can continue!

@@LeonardoDaVincelli glad to hear that 🙏
I'm not trying to sound rude, but I wanted to respond to your comment. There is always work in Iraq, but the United States always finds a way to demolish and destroy everything. Since the first Gulf War, when they convinced Saddam to attack Iran and gave him everything to accomplish his mission, until now they refuse to abandon Iraq, as they consider it their backyard.
