So interesting. Can you apply this to a wall that has orange peel texture?
Sounds like Roman Clay is best for a kitchen hood?
I'm getting ready to use Roman Clay Fade to Black on my office walls. They are new drywall, but painted black with a satin finish (so a slight sheen). Can I use this as my primer base, or do I have to prime again? Has anyone else had any experience (good or bad) using Roman Clay on a satin finished wall?
I'm building a cargo van toy hauler. can this roman clay be used on an interior of a shower
This video is not completely clear, was the top coat a 3rd coat of roman clay or another product that was not shown?
Love how he says to start in a corner, 1 minute after he’s been applying it and not from a corner.
Great demonstration !....especially on this flimsy board. This technique is so much easier on a real wall. I'd like to add a bit of advice for DIYers, take a metal file and round off the sharp tips on the spatula corners as it'll make doing this kind of random movement technique a lot easier to accomplish.
What are those boards you're sampling the paints on called?
Weird question, can you use it on top of wallpaper?
is it better to use a smaller brush for better design! I used a different company for lime wash and I used to paint it with 4 inch brush
How many coats would you need for "In the Navy" roman plaster and should the primer be close to the finished color?
beautiful!
I tried different colors and to be honest, didn’t like the effect , hard to see it , I rather use Venetian, much marble effects
I tried with piano room and Figueroa colors , never got the effects, rather use Venetian ,
Can u do the whole room with light lime wash?
How do you get different colors
Have you tried a different outcome using a combination of trowel and brush to maneuver the mixture?
Can I do 3 coats if I don’t love how my 2nd coat looks?
is this able to be used as a shower wall? so occasional water contact for short periods of time?
No.
I tried your lime wash product once and it didn’t work like it was supposed to. It looked like a solid color all around, as if I just painted regular paint. I used your Portola primer, and tried 2-3 other primers and in the end it just looked like regular paint. No cloudy variation. Saved the day by switching to Roman clay and client loved it. Just wanted to know if I did something wrong or maybe a defective batch?
Hi Igor! Give us a call at (323) 655-2211, and we'd be happy to chat about it in more detail and give a thorough explanation. Can you tell me what Lime Wash color you used?
Is there a way to apply Roman Clay faster, if you don't want too much variation?
Like with a tinted primer?
@@network54sales You can roll on an Ultra Flat color match of the same Roman Clay color as the first coat, and just do one Roman Clay coat as the second.
Is Roman clay waterproof? Usable in a shower? As I’ve seen one couple use it, in their van’s shower. Also, ok to use in a van? Won’t crack or anything, when in motion?
Oh- DANG, just heard you get to the part where you said you can’t use it in the shower! I guess the van life folks didn’t read the fine print 🫣 … I wonder what would happen if you used it in the shower? I guess they’ll find out.
I remodeled my bathroom and used Roman Clay. I know how to use it and have used it several times. You absolutely NEED to seal it. At least with 3 coats. Any stray water splashes on the wall that doesn't have enough sealer or isn't sealed, will automatically stain. Hes being very generous about how practical it is in a wet environment.
Roman clay???by any other name is Venetian Plaster. Or maybe a product widely used in the american southwest, American Clay. Made in New Mexico, USA
Roman Clay is a paint/plaster hybrid material that is similar to Venetian plaster but with a more matte, organic finish. Specific to us, we’ve been developing and producing Roman Clay in Los Angeles for over 20 years.
I’ve heard some people say that when using a metal knife, it sometimes leaves unwanted dark marks? Have you had that happen with your experience? Thanks!
We have, yes - metal knives can occasionally leave dark burnish marks when used with light colors in Roman Clay. We recommend using plastic knives with lighter colors to avoid this.
@@portolapaintswould you say Charleston is a light or dark color to use metal or plastic putty knife?
@@nguyenie3 - Charleston would be considered a light color. It can be done carefully with a metal knife, or to be safe, use plastic.
looks like a regulalry painted wall.
looks abysmal
A picture of the finished, dryed wall would be helpful.
Looks like a knock off of Venetian plaster
Can you share the color?
can the clay be used in an environment with extreme temperature changes.
Did you start over primer or paint in this video?
Wow never heard of this
A tutorial on an outside concrete block would be great!
First, is Clay like Lime? I’ve heard..Once you use Lime, you have to completely sand it off ‘remove it’ if you ever want to change the color, other put another type applications on it. Would you suggest like with lime, removing this clay application as well? Also, although this is a slightly different product, in as far as the thickness, how would you compare a lime and lime wash with this process and product? Sorry for all the questions, but I’ve been reading about lime wash, and the problems and issues with either 1. application, and or 2. diversity ie anti microbial aspects which prevent future application of another product later. To make it clearer of my concern, because I know! It might be confusing how I’m trying to explain it. So! “Let’s say” one lime- washed their wall, and in a year, they wanted to change it up, or maybe add this clay application; how would they go about that? Meaning, should they first remove all the lime first? ie sanding! Like I’ve been hearing! Or could one have applied a sealer perhaps to the lime washed wall, making it easier to cover it with another application in the future. Thank you for your time!
Painting Over Lime Wash or Roman Clay Over Lime Wash Preparation: Remove any loose or flaking lime wash from the surface. Primer: Apply a high-quality, alkali-resistant primer to ensure good adhesion. Paint: Use a high-quality acrylic or latex paint. Application: Apply at least two coats for even coverage. Over Roman Clay Preparation: Sand the surface lightly to create a smooth base. Primer: Use a high-quality primer suitable for clay or mineral-based surfaces. Paint: Use a high-quality acrylic or latex paint. Application: Apply at least two coats for even coverage. In both cases, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for both the primer and the paint to ensure the best results.
What is the color of the clay used in this video?
basicly its paint with plaster fnish effect or its plaster?? 1 more question is: do i need to peel of the old paint before using this product. If its plaster so its "yes"
My wall has eggshell paint and I want to use Roman clay on it. What prep work should I do? Thanks!
Essentially, any all-purpose stain-blocking primer should suffice as long as your surface is smooth.
What's the color? I ❤️ it
This is Piano Room
How long typically would you recommend waiting between coats ?
once the first coat is sanded, do you need to wipe it with a tack cloth to get the dust off or can you go ahead and apply second coat without wiping off the sanding dust?
Definitely a good idea to wipe the dust off. I usually do a quick once over with a micro fiber cloth.
You never start lime-wash paint from the edge/corner of wall. You start about 5 inches from edge and then start brushing outward in a cloud like pattern.
Are you maybe talking about powdered limewash?
And this stuff just works and looks the same over all my drywall mud.. like on my corners, inside and out?
Nice
Could you do this on a countertop and epoxy over?
I wouldn't recommend doing this however we've had people paint their tile (especially if this is for decoration purposes; ideally not a surface that's high-traffic). So feel free to give this a shot if you'd like however we don't recommend because you might experience issues with adhesion.
beautiful
Is Roman Clay fine to use in Bathrooms?
Hi there, Yes Roman Clay is actually the recommended finish to use in bathrooms. It's actually a lot more forgiving in the long run and a lot more easier to touch up. I recommend sealing the bathroom with our Roman Clay Topcoat. It will add a slight sheen to the finish but it's kind of like an Eggshell level of sheen which ranges between 4-8%. Feel free to reach back out to us on info@portolapaints.com if there are any other questions or concerns. Best, Katrina
I’ve got a new fireplace mantle I’ve DIY’ed. Do I need to mud and prime the drywall before using Roman clay? Or is just priming it enough?
You want the surface to be primed and and as smooth as possible. Skim coating is great, but not always necessary.
Can this be applied to a knock down finish wall?
What colour are you using, vert beautiful
I have orange peel textured drywall. Can I put on a skim coat on and apply over that?
Roman Clay is best applied over smooth surfaces. Any texture such as orange peel or knockdown are going to cause difficulties in application. A little roller nap texture is usually okay. In some cases priming the wall in the same color matched in our acrylic paint can help if there is a little texture. Definitely put on a skim coat prior to applying the Roman Clay.
I applied the first coat of Speakeasy on top of white lime prep coat. I'm wondering if I have "over worked" brushing it out. There are several very light spots that seem like the lime is more prominent. In this video it doesn't look like you go to great lengths to "stretch" the paint out.
