Douglas Moran
Добавлен 26 окт 2021
After 10+ years of RC plane flying I decided to get some training to solo in 172 Skyhawk, switched gears to an Aerolite 103 and after some taxi and extended crow hops plan to pattern fly this weekend. “Film at 11:00” Pattern flown with great success on October 2nd, the following weekend flew to new location at Citrus Hedging and have logged 10 hrs successfully including two sorties to Lake Okeechobee. I continue to be a weekend warrior as logistics make it a three hour drive round trip just to fly. Currently as of 3/26/23 I’ve logged 18.5 hrs in my Aerolite 103 flys hands off with electric trim I purchased and installed, rudder now controls level flight and turns! April 15th I’m going to Ga to pickup an Aford a plane I’ve purchased I’ll put together and play with it asap.

5/8 crosswind take off, lots of thermal activity, one second I’m shooting up with a ton of lift seconds later the bottom drops out from under, roller coaster ride!

Lake Okeechobee cruising along the canal, one more 360 video from this flight to download and edit, then upload, then post, lengthy process but make for nice views. Meanwhile there’s the thunderstorm brewing north of me and makes for some interesting flying back to base. I’ll edit that crosswind landing video next, good times!

Quick video of take off and climb out to cruising altitude with some hands free flying. That’s right, I installed an electric trim and basically use the rudder to maintain level flight and make turns.

Lost power just after take off, landed and after 30 minutes searching for the little cap that came off end of fuel line fuel gauge. Found cap not far from engine warm up and mag check area. Engine would start and run but not hold full power for more than a few seconds and start to lose power. After reducing throttle to around 4,800rpm it would regain power and continue to hold until throttled b...

Looks a little stormy.
Just got everything put away before the rain came down in buckets, but everything checked out ok.
Nice video! Thank you for posting it!
Your welcome, thanks for having a look and commenting
nice. thnx for making videos
Your welcome, thanks for commenting, I’ll be back to making videos again very soon, had to take a little break.
Do these airplanes come with an airspeed indicator or an altimeter ?
The airspeed indicator you’ll notice a graduated tube with sliding membrane within it that moves up and down giving you a fairly accurate measurement of airspeed. Altimeter is located on the instrument panel and is also fairly accurate, most Panels include exhaust and cylinder head temperature indicators as well.
I like these cause they are Part 103 like my Trike but heard they are around 20k. I know of a Rans S-14 with a Rotax 582 for about 6k but needs a little work and also I would need a Sports License which seems difficult to get. Think I should look for something like this if you know about how much.
Yes they generally go for between 15/25k used and about 35k new complete. They’re a really good flying aircraft that of course don’t require a license but training is recommended. Depending on where your located sometimes you find one and it’s to damn far, even if it’s a good deal. I’m located in central Florida, I’ll shoot ya a message if I decide to sell mine. I’ve been considering selling.
@@douglasmoran3070 thanks but think I would need some training first but I would like to step up to something like yours someday.
@@Berkner80 yes I agree, I took 35 hrs to solo in a cessna 172 and then jumped into my Aerolite. I crow hopped until I could fly entire length of runway straight n level and land, it took two weekends. It’s all in my videos from the start. Good luck and blue skies sir.
@@douglasmoran3070 yes I saw your first video. I guess flying a Cessna really helped you. I only have experience in a Trike but I would like to fly a fixed wing someday.
Wow, nice job with the trim. How did you do that?
Found a used Ray Allen servo complete with push rod and trim tab and attached to right elevator. Purchased rocker switch and led position indicator and mounted those to yoke powered by a 3 cell lipo batt. Ace hardware 6 wire insulated type cable run down along tail boom to hook everything up. It works great after I enlarged the trim tab from the original used one. I basically fly level and bank left n right using rudder pedals. Thanks for your interest, my mentor and flying buddy first used a bungee cord to to take the pressure off the yoke.
you can tell how your nose is weather Veining on take off and downwind the strong crosswinds you were in. I just flew on the 8th of July and had 50 degree 22 mph crosswind. It surely makes you pucker up. Nice job!
It’s good to practice, one time upon returning from lake O a storm blew in from NW and made for an interesting landing with pucker factor.
Take off? Landing?
No just flying on that video showing off hands free flying, but I’ve got plenty of take offs n landing videos posted. Been so windy lately, haven’t flown in a month of Sunday’s and I’m really itching to GoFly.
Thanks, I appreciate that, never fails though always windy on the weekends.
That looked a little touch and go there for a second, but you pulled it out and finished a nice landing.
Very cool! Can I ask you about your helmet, where did you find it or did you build it?
Found on Facebook you can search Facebook marketplace, use keyword, “para-glider helmet”, I also love to tell people, the whole plane got a parachute, you get that, the whole plane got a parachute! BRS by Magnum.
Have you tried short field takeoffs or landings? If so, what's the shortest takeoff roll you can do?
Haven’t really tried any stol activities yet, but I do notice a shorter takeoff with a notch of flaps, maybe around 175/200’
Great view buddy!
Thanks, I appreciate that.
my dream right now😍
Yes sir, lots a hard working side jobs and saving $ finally finding the right one for the right price within a day’s drive to pickup. Now I drive 1.5 hrs to just north of Lake Okeechobee to fly off a private field and then 1.5 hrs back home. Loving every minute!
Nice flying! What is the highest windy day you have flown the 103 in?
That was it, steady winds of 13 with gusts to 20 it was a good day to practice a little crabbing and really working that rudder.
@@douglasmoran3070 Thank you! I've been training in the lite sport eglet and getting ready to fly my aerolite 103. That is awesome flying 😎
@@motorcyc1 best advice I could give is watch your airspeed like a hawk, especially on takeoffs n landing and remember to fly all the way to the ground. I always carry a little extra airspeed right into ground effect air, then reduce throttle and hold flair to touch mains first. Your gonna really like the way your 103 flies, just don’t try and yank it up at lift off, just gradually let her rise up. Happy flying and are you going to make n post some videos?
@@douglasmoran3070 Thank you for that information. I've been told about the air speed and landing on this aircraft. I appreciate your help. It will be a while before I take her up. But I will let you know in my experience flying it.
I would like to buy an Aerolite 103. Could you share your experience and the price? I live in Florida
Check out my videos if you want, search Aerolite 103 Doug Moran I’ve just got started about 4 months ago and having a blast
What part of Florida are you located?
Doesn’t take long to drop. Looks like you kept the hovering till the end. I like that aircraft!!!!!
High drag, low glide rate until entering ground effect air, then I hold it until reaching the smoothest stretch of runway.
Kick ass dougie
Thanks Mike, having a blast, on your left, getting some airtime!
Cool. I had bought plans to build a helecopter when i was a kid.. it took two kawasaki motors to build it.. of course my parents werent going to fund my idea.
Aerolite 103 is a very good flying machine, easy to work on and maintain. I prefer fixed wing over gyros of heli
Nice job that looks like a cool area to fly around
Cows n horses and plenty of area’s to land if engine out happens, only have 118 hrs Hirth 2702. you’ve progressed nicely, especially that departure from I think is your parents property, wow that looks close.
@@douglasmoran3070 Thanks it defiantly wasn't ideal but was doable and kinda a rush lol I think Hes moved the stuff that was kinda in the way now so next time should be a bit safer. I left a strip un-dug in the bean field next to my house so i can make the trip again if we don't get much snow this year
@@jordonweets yea but you get awesome climb out compared to my Aerolite and I enjoy the low flying you do.
2nd best fighter of the war.
Yes I’m sometimes at Indian town airport and lucky enough to grab some video but I hav to ask in your opinion the number 1 fighter?
Looking very good!!
Thanks!
🤟💪👍👍👍👍
Thank you thank you thank you
Aerolite 103 is in my very humble opinion a very good flying machine, seems a little heavy on the ailerons but light on the elevator.
That is a very loooong runway. Goes almost to Georgia I think!
6300 feet, give or take a couple, now I’m at a different grass strip 2500 feet, made three nice flights last night an hour before sunset. I’ll post them later today, my GoPro keeps cutting out while filming, don’t know why.
Using full flaps on takeoff?? How much “sink” when you retract
@@stroutmail glad you asked, I tried several combinations of flaps that day. Setup doesn’t have setting indicator obviously, so what I do is count 1-1,000 2-1,000 3- 1,000 for full flaps. On that particular take off I was at 2-1,000 and gives me plenty of lift but yet very reasonable sink, no more than 10 maybe 20% guessing. Citrus Hedging is about 2,000 ft usable another 500 ft I’d rather not tread unless needed, but plenty of green flat fields surrounding offering safety if engine out. Enjoyed my 4 cool evening flights soaking it after the days winds settled down along with the soaring buzzards I wouldn’t want to ever meet up close. Back at it Saturday 👍
Looking good!😊
Very smooth. If you care to share, I am curious how long your run is and the airspeed you were holding as you lifted and settled.
Of the 6,000’ runway I held 2/3’ agl for almost 5,000’ averaged 55/60 knots and settled in just under 40
@@douglasmoran3070 Thanks!
Very nice
I was able to edit and create a new video, fingers crossed for good weather tomorrow
Looking forward to when you get the camera figured out.
Yea me too, should make for some interesting videos. When I’m in the app they look amazing and your able to move around 360
@@douglasmoran3070 ya ill bet. Someday I'll get one but ya you should be able to find a quik vid to help you learn how to use it I've never used one so I'd have no clue
@@jordonweets yea they have them but just haven’t gotten around to it honestly, like you I’d just rather fly my butt off
@@douglasmoran3070 I definitely understand that lol 😆
@@jordonweets bty where in this world are you located? I’m down here in sunny S Florida about 30 miles east of lake Okeechobee, Indian town airport x-58

Yea this video was shot using my phone
@@douglasmoran3070 that's OK I was referring to the fact you were crow hopping atleast I think you were. That's how I learned 🙂
Oh yea, basic’s I’m down with, that’s a 6,000’ runway and I did several at least 5,000’ holding 3/5’ agl
@@douglasmoran3070 then I would say your getting very close to making a loop nice job 👍
@@jordonweets yes this weekend weather permitting, they’re keeping an eye on a possible hurricane heading our way
