Phil Smith Groove Day 2024 Masterclass Rudimental Cheat Codes
This is my masterclass for Groove Day 2024 at South Plains College. I discuss logical and musical ways to learn and use rudiments.
I explain why I don't treat rudiments as drum set vocabulary but think of them as improvisational vocabulary. Other topics covered are musical ways to reframe and group rudiments to make them easier and more enjoyable to learn, synonym rudiments, metering rudiments, accent placement, active relaxation, and more.

Switching between Brushes and Sticks
Просмотров 2952 года назад
A smooth transition between brushes and sticks is a valuable technique that all drummers should master. There are numerous ways to accomplish this task. In this Two-Minute lesson, we'll discuss the most important aspects of this technique and the most common way to switch from brushes to sticks.
Tips for the Drummer As Music Director
Просмотров 472 года назад
In many professional situations, the drummer is often awarded the responsibility of music director. This job is unfamiliar territory for many drummers and often brings anxiety with the title! In this Two-Minute lesson, we discuss the best and worst traits of an MD and how you can maximize your ability to do a good job.
Do you play accents correctly?
Просмотров 712 года назад
Many drummers believe that by simply playing an accent louder, they are interpreting the music correctly. Not so fast. In this Two-Minute lesson, we discuss how accents are often misplayed and how to execute them with proper concept and technique.
Should Your Cymbals Cut or Blend?
Просмотров 2962 года назад
Unlike tuning drums, when you buy a cymbal, you have to live with the sound it produces. One of the sound characteristics we often look for is the ability to either cut through loud amplification or blend into the mix without distracting from the music. In this Two-Minute Lesson, we'll dive into how two disparate cymbals affect the same song.
Brushes in 3/4
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.2 года назад
This lesson was by request. In this video, I'll show you a different twist on playing brushes in 3/4. This pattern doesn't use brush taps like many others. Rather, its subtlety relies on smooth sweeps and thups.
Intro Fills and Grooves
Просмотров 1592 года назад
Have you ever heard a recording of yourself and been surprised at how unclear or unstable your intro was? In this Two-Minute Lesson, I'll give you a few tips to help clarify how you approach intro fills and grooves. We'll also dig deep into the drum archives and discuss classic examples of stable and unstable intro grooves and fills.
Big Band Drumming - part 3 - Articulations, Timbre, and Sonorities
Просмотров 5042 года назад
The final part of our series on big band drumming addresses matching sectional and ensemble articulations, timbre, and sonorities. Each section of a jazz band has specific tone colors that we can enhance when setting up and playing their respective figures. I'll show you several ideas and practice suggestions that will give your playing more depth while complimenting the band.
Big Band Drumming - Part 2 - Improvising Setups
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
In part 2 of our series on big band drumming, we address the issue of improvising setups and their appropriate length. We'll discuss a few common short and long rhythmic figures and use those note values as our base for improvising setups.

You’ve got most everything right except it was Ed Green on Sarah smile listen to the Phils. They’re a lot more mechanical than Jim Gordon’s smooth touch.

Keltner was a much more dynamic and interesting drummer BY FAR! Gordon was a decent pocket drummer, but rarely found any textures in the music! If you listen to studio giant Hal Blaine, then you will figure out, who Gordon tried to mimic; which kept him employed!

Nice overview. Dumbfounded how you don’t play his solo from Apostrophe as the sample, though. 😳 The fills he does on “Anyday” from Layla are amazing, never the same thing twice. Best of all, his playing on The Derek Live at the Fillmore blows me away-especially “Got To Get Better…” Thanks for putting this up.

I enjoyed this video very much. Roger's contributions influenced many drummers of my generation. One song I expose my students to is "When A Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge. It was mentioned here. If one listens closely to bridge, the ride cymbal doubles into a 16th note triplet shuffle. The 16th note triplet shuffle pattern at that tempo is very difficult. Yet Roger does it flawlessly and in time. It is challenging and I recommend drummers to try and master it. Many Brazilian drummers do a similar pattern with eight notes at faster tempos. It requires relaxation and technique to pull off. Give it a shot and Roger's playing takes on a different level of technique and feel.

Most drummers have no concept of opening and closing the Hats on individual 16th notes while still keeping time- especially involving syncopation. David Garibaldi of the band 'Tower of Power' was a master of that technique, but only a few other drummers know how to do it. You should be able to open and close the Hats on any beat in virtually any groove! After doing it for decades, I'm still learning new techniques that I never hear anywhere!

Most explanations anywhere, including here on youtube or even in most well established musical school scenarios, fail to address this seemingly trivial topic as indept and as thoroughly as it is dealt with jere in this very video. I am a drummer of many years myself and with ample big band experience and ive nonproblem admitting here that ive never advised former students of mine nor personally addressed this topic and subsequent issue as well and properly as this drummer has in this video here! To be clearer, im impressed and I have reverted to being a student again myself. Perfectly explained and a rather important topic to discuss tor any drummer dealing with written chart figures and the philosophical approach to executing them. Bothe for the tune and the orchestra. Wholst id love to wax on about the challenging dynamic of achieving perfect off beat hit displacements against a band that has its own quarter note pulse understanding contrary to the drummers playing and indicating. The fact remains that the ideal execution is based on a standardised quarter that the drummer must hear and feel and as informed by knowledge of the piece form snd melody. My comductor likes my timing but the rest of the band isnt on yet on my nor the conductors time. Im in the amateurs though. This drum teacher explains the ideal and the rinviples perfectly. Im glad i watched and shamefully will steal the lesson i was taught her but in good conscience i will refernce my source(this guy, video and channel), and i will point my drum students who are learning chart interpretation to view this channel for further reference and learning. Great video, great job

That Great Gretsch Sound. I’ve been fortunate enough to be playing Gretsch drums I was a child because my father was a Gretsch player from 1972 or 73. I am still playing that kit today. Since then I’ve purchased another USA Custom kit in 1999 ( Laquer natural maple). In 2014 I purchased a Brooklyn Kit in Vintage Cream Oyster. In addition to that I have owned at least 8 Gretsch snares. The ones remaining in my showcase are the Vinnie Colaiuta God Bless America singnature model from 2003 , A Harvey Mason Grand Old Flag signature model also from 2002 . A Harvey Mason Broadkaster in satin Ebony from 1998, and a Vinnie Signature Whitewash Laquer with Matte Black hoops and hardware, all of these drums are unplayed , untuned and placed right into the showcase. I am VERY Proud to own these drums. I had the pleasure of meeting Paul Cooper and the Gretsch family in NYC the Cutting Room for Gretsch’s 140th Anniversary celebration. Thanks for posting, Paul G

There's a different Jim Gordon who is a LA session horn player. His credits frequently get mistaken for drummer James Beck Gordon's (like on the Band's "Last Waltz" concert album, which people say is drummer Gordon when it's the other guy). They both made solo albums in the '60s, with horn player Jim Gordon's called "Jim Gordon Plays Heavy" while dummer Jim Gordon's was "Jimmy Gordon & His JazzNPops Band."
