Did they collapse the entrance or open it?
They opened it. The Metro entrances were all sealed shortly before the missiles hit, due to the bunkers being at capacity. Of course not everyone made it, both civilians and members of the military were left stranded outside. In their desperation the military decided to open fire on the entrance with a kinetic round (Sabot) rather than somethign explosive in an attempt to minimize civilian casualties amongst the mass standing in front of the doors. In hindsight, this may have been the reason, or at least part of it, why the population of the Novosibirsk Metro succumbed to radiation in the end.

Not "very quickly"; they are designed to be in higher concentrations and that will remain a lot longer, effectively contaminating a large zone, that's why it's the most irradiated city. If you want to read more, read the On The Beach novel.

Supernatural shenanigans. In metro due to the apocalyptic death toll supernatural stuff happens in places. One in universe theory is the barrier between worlds was damaged by the war. But theirs no concrete explanation for most of the stuff going on. This includes haunted tunnels that can kill you. Some of it is definitely caused by dark ones a humaniod mutated species with psychic abilities. They watch over and protect artyom and may be using this city as a home as radiation does not effect them.
Maybe it was a dark one showing it him why i have no idea
It seems implied in the previous games that the massive amount of sudden and terrible death caused by the nuclear war caused psychic ripples that bleed through time and space.
in the books it's implied that the supernatural abilities Artyom has are because of his telepathic connection to the dark ones.

Would've like to see more retaliation strikes but I guess those are anti ballistic instead of nukes?
The ballistic missiles wouldn’t have been so close to the cities. Those were probably the interceptor batteries, which meant those people probably had about 15 seconds to get inside before the first nuke hit.
Did anyone else read the log of one of the Novosibirsk soldiers? The guy saw the flash of the "bomb", but saw that it was far away in the sky and the blast didnt reach them. He then noted a weird cloud beginning to move over the city... at that point I realized what type of bomb was used....
So was it like a nuke meant to focus on more chemicals/more radiation to kill the inhabitants vs destroying the city sense novo is mostly still intact?
@@mbridges6348 It was either a dirty bomb, where radioactive material is spread via conventional explosives. Or MUCH more likely, judging from the extreme radiation and the soldier talking about a bright flash, a salted bomb; a salted bomb uses a nuke designed to release mostly neutron radiation (at the cost of explosive force), to turn a stable isotope into a radioactive one. UK tested cobalt 59 (a stable, non-radioactive material) in a 1 kiloton bomb. The cobalt 59 turned into highly radioactive cobalt 60 due to neutron fusion. Just a few grams of this stuff is enough to poison a small village, so imagine what multiple tons of that stuff would do. You can use other materials to balance between radiation strength and time. What that bomb in Novo did was basically spread nuclear waste over the entire area, it was so far up, that the weak blast never reached the ground, to spread across the entire town. That's why everything is still intact, but highly irridated.
@@xXYannuschXx oh wow thanks for telling me all that! I know in the game they say the radiation is 7 times more deadly there than in Moscow, but originally assumed it was just hit with more nukes considering it being an industrial hub
Tokarev hypothesises that Novosibirsk was hit with a Cadmium warhead
@@Mister_Kourkoutas I think it’s cannon that they were hit with a cobalt bomb
If I remember the lore right, those tanks were the only reason survivors were able to get down into the metro below Novosibirsk. The military had sealed off the entrance to prevent people from seeking refuge there knowing they wouldn't be safe from radiation if they tried. The commanders of those tanks must have had other ideas, deciding to below open the entrance last minute.
Probably realized the evacuation was doomed anyway and allowed them to get some kind of shelter
Actually.....no.... There are diary entries in-game that show that the military actually fired on the subway to close it, because they could not contain the amount of people trying to force their way into the tunnels. You can even see the civilians screaming and running away, because some had been killed and injured in the blast ruclips.net/video/mPdgVMR6j8Q/видео.html
Nope, the tanks sealed the metro entrances permanently since novosibirsks metro isnt as deep as moscows so it was important that as little radiation as possible got through from the openings.

Man, coming from metro 2033 and Last Light, I thought the surface of Moscow was bad, but when the train got near Novosibirsk I could feel how oppressive the atmosphere was and how much worse the situation was compared to what I played before. I agree, hence why I recorded it. I really liked the whole story behind Novosibirsk, even though playing through it was incredibly annoying and my game crashed right before picking up the cure.
@@BlackThanator You know, just thinking back to it. I can remember how Colonel Miller remarked at how all the buildings in Novosibirsk were mostly intact compared to the ruins of Moscow. Was it ever explained in the game why Novosibirsk was in such better condition but waaay more irradiated?
@@prapironnam6441 To be honest, I don't know anymore. It's been quite a while since I last played through the game. I'd have to look at it again.
@@BlackThanator Yeah same. Oh well. Still, its a freaking awesome game with some excellent plot devices.
@@prapironnam6441 I did some research, turns out Novosibirsk was hit with a Cobalt bomb, unlike Moscow which was hit by numerous Uranium and biological weapons. That bomb did not have as much destructive force, however it spread far more and denser fallout than more traditional warheads. This led to most buildings being left standing, but the incredibly high levels of radiation. Within the lore, Novosibirsk was a giant research centre for biologic alterations and mutations. Because of that, and the high density of research bunkers, a weapon with more potent radiation was chosen so the fallout would be more likely to spread underground and erradiate the bunkers, killing all living cells (hopefully).
To idiots who think the army was trying to keep people out of entrance: you cannot do that with Sabot round, you can only do that with High Explosive round. They used Sabot to break the door so the people could get in instead of causing traffic on roads, the Sabot is good for that and it won't collapse the entrance. If they wanted to collapse the entrance - they would blow it up without caring for civilians. The notes found in game also mention that guards inside metro were afraid of letting many people inside and closed doors early.
It seems to me like they were following orders no matter what, and wanted to make an entrance for the tanks. Hence “push them out of the way if you have to”. People getting in through the blown door wasn’t their original goal.

Actually, in the Metro universe there are 2 books about Novosibirsk after the war but prior to that civil war in 2035 - the novels To See the Sun and Parad Alle. Also a short story included in one of the storybooks. Don't know though if all this had ever been translated from Russian. As a Russian, can only tell that the stories and lore of Novosibirsk is pretty solid and good. UPD: the first novel was translated to German, so German fans are a little bit luckier :). Feel that we have to wait for an English translation though.

Did they blast the entrance to let the people in or was it to keep them out?
To keep them (and the radiation) out.
*Straight out a wiki:* In the flashback, Artyom sees through the eyes of a tank commander in a T90. They come to a stop in the rain, with the air-raid sirens going off, to find that the way to the Metro is blocked and that the door has been sealed. Another tank commander calls to Artyom and orders that they blast their way through, to use Sabot rounds in order to reduce shrapnel. The tank complies and Artyom is treated to seeing his own vehicle firing on the metro entrance, seeing the crowd scream and scatter. This fails to help the soldiers survive however, as the missiles hit seconds later.

It appears as if the entrance has been shot at to disperse the group of people (which I assume were protesters).
They were people attempting to get into the metro, Novosibirsk had a failed evacuation which explains the gridlocked roads and why the tanks were ordered to move over vehicles and shoot the entrance in an attempt to collapse it to keep the radiation out
Jakob Paul I thought they did it to let them in? Sabot round would go right through the door not explode and collapse the entrance.

@@sharkperson3307 I guess they tried to get the tanks in
The tank commander that order the tank to destroy the metro entrance is Captain Pelayo or Lieutenant Vasquez
Why was the Metro entrance blocked ?
According to the orders found in the area, the tunnels are too shallow to guarantee safety when the strike hits, so the soldiers are dispersed to seal the entrances before the missiles hit.
Responding to the reply: and later on some tank commanders decided it was better to let some people in, but some others had others to bring the tanks inside the metros
