Georg Friedrich Haendel (1685 - 1759) The Eight Grand Suites | Blandine Verlet, Cembalo
Here is Blandine Verlet’s (1942 - 2018) rendition of Haendel’s Suites de Pièces pour le Clavecin. Haendel himself published these works in November 1720, clarifying his doing so with the following note: “I have been obliged to publish some of the following lessons, because subreptitious and incorrect copies of them had god abroad. I have added several new ones to make it work more useful which, if it meets with a favorable reception, I will still proceed to publish more, reckoning it my duty, with my small talent, to serve a nation [England] from which I have received so generous a protection."
Blandine Verlet, Clavecin Dowd

This is one of my favorite performance and I'm glad to see it on RUclips. On my CD (which has the same picture) she plays the first canon after contrapunctus iv, the second after contrapunctus vii, and the third and fourth after contrapunctus xi. But here all four canons are moved to the end, after contrapunctus xiii. Why? Did she record them more than once?

In this later recording Leonhardt omits the unfinished Contrapunctus XIV, which he believed was not intended as part of the Art of Fugue. Thus the AoF should be considered a completed work.

The "missing Contrapunctus 14" for which Bach left space in his conception for the print of the first edition (which he didn't live to see) was supposed to have been a "mirror fugue" (same genre as Contrapuncti 12 and 13) on four subjects. However, it is unlikely that this missing movement would have surpassed the finest fugues in the collection...

BRAVO!

It was indeed. Was the only master at the time looking back to Palestrina, and other German masters from the late Baroque, re working on cantus firmus and insisting on the beauty, power and expressiveness of the fugue. The other composers where focused on more "mundane" kind of music, farder away from what they considered "too scholar"

The great thing about Bach is the many ways in which his music can be played. It makes for an ever new approach. I'm a Schiff/Pheria fan when it comes to Bach Gould I find interesting but nothing more then that. Kempff is as always unpretentious. There is never any kind of show off or unnecessary notes. For Kempff there is never just piano playing. This is some ways quite dry but at the same time clear and without any exaggeration. In that way it's refreshing.
