The question: Now that kitesurfing caught your attention you are wondering: what do you need to kitesurf? What equipment should you have to be able to ride? The saying goes that three things are needed at a minimum to start riding: the kite, the board, and the harness. Sure thing there must be wind, water, and you present 😉 . Well, the reality is… you will need more than ten things to get going...

    Happend to me within the first month of my kite journey, good thing o started already attaching my leash in a semi-suicide mode which i recommend to anyone. Second thing that helped was to never use the chicken stick and always expecting the loop to unhook.

    I realised this problem before it ever happened to me, so I moved to the cabrinha fireball system. That's also not perfect, but I removed the lower part and use it with a ring on a rope bar. Has never failed on me. Also less rotation force on my harness. The hook is obsolete. It comes from times harnesses were made for windsurfing.

      @KitesurfingAcademy 6 месяцев назад

      Right you are, new chicken loops do address this problem, but lots of them come with another challenge which leads to snapping the pin off completely. Fireball looked good as well, at first... The gear is constantly evolving, so, let's keep up with this trend! Be safe!

    Just a few days ago we were riding in a super light wind conditions and once I decided to actually finish, the wind just disappeared in a split second (there was rain approaching as well). I recalled your video, tried both ways and actually managed to lift the kite! It didn't get me far though - just some 20-30 meters closer to the shore before whatever was left of that wind was gone for good. But when I got to the beach I was greeted with "wow, that was impressive that you actually managed to relaunch the kite!" 😎 So... Thanks a lot for a very useful video!

    Thanks for the encouragement of this tutorial which outlines the real time it will probably take to get up and riding. Just completed a 5 day course but wind was flukey at 6-10 knts and we were deposited 2 miles offshore in a full Atlantic swell to learn. No flat water or lagoon or beach start and very little instruction. I failed to even water start but now understand why. Such centres operating in this fashion do the sport a disservice and I will be wiser next time.

      Glad to help, man! I agree with you, communication and conditions are key variables in the beginning. Every detail is important, especially with this marginal wind 6-10 knts. A little drift/current and it may either make it or break it, depending on the direction. Keep on trying! Once you master it you'll be hooked for LIFE! Best!

      fully agree. I took a 5 day course in Cape Verde, with huge waves and hundreds of riders passing by, I couldn't ride even 10 meters. Then another course in Fuerteventura, deposited by a boat in the middle of the ocean, huge Atlantic swell, and attached to the board with a leash! My kids decided to never kite again, and I made very little progress. Then I went to a lagoon (Stagnone), and I finally started riding. Why don't they tell us from the beginning?!!

    So strange how today in a different instructional video I saw for the first time some guy launch his kite backwards like that and then spin it around! I was like, "I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT!" 😃 And now another video teaching it! Its funny because the other day I got my kite out and the previous time I had unhooked my lines I accidentally unhooked one of the short blue ones off the tips and it confused me to where it belonged so I put them on the leading edge.. well lol the dang thing wouldn't fly but when it flipped over it would try and fly backwards because now the tip lines were shorter lol I thought it was kinda funny that it actually could fly backwards and now I learn that you can launch it that way! I did figure out where they were supposed to be later but the wind died to around 10 mph and I couldn't get it launched..🥴 I love this new to me sport so much and I haven't even got up on the board yet! Oh I can't wait till I can cruise around the lake on a mild wind day!

    I tend to find modern broad-strap pads a real pain - when set tight enough to feel secure in chop, they don't allow pivoting. Old school narrow straps without the pad seem to allow a more secure fit while maintaining pivot. That and the fact that nearly all modern pads are made of poor quality plastics and parts that break in the first crash.

      @@KitesurfingAcademy I have a huge problem with foul-hooking. I will use the Mystique "sltealth" system from now on on the water, so it can't happen again. I am having trouble edging on both sides and trying to get toe-side (I have progressed very rapidly). Other big question, if I am playing in big surf out at the reef (4ft-6ft) it is dangerous to use a board leash, but in such waves, if I lose my board, how do I see the board to recover it?

    • @KitesurfingAcademy
      @KitesurfingAcademy 2 года назад

      Hey-hey-hey, Jack! Well, from your questions it seems that you are waaay more than a beginner, mate! So, abt the foul-hooking, there are two diametrically opposite approaches I can recommend. 1. Try to stop using the chicken pin for a while. Yeah, just like we did in the old days, when there were NO chicken pin at all in the first place. With this add-on (or take away rather) you will need to pay attention to the chicken loop and to the tension in your lines at all times, and when this becomes a habit you can go back to the comfortable ch-pin. This will be needed when you start riding unhooked later on as well. 2. Try Cabrinha's fireball. This thing is way safer than the regular Chicken loop. Still not perfect yet better, in my opinion. As to the edging, I wish I could see what is going on with your riding position... I am gonna guess that you are standing up right and not leveraging the pull of the kite as much as needed. Lean away from the kite MORE, see how low can you go! I explain all these details on the day 4 in our program, at KitesurfingAcademy.com and here is that video: ruclips.net/video/ykoWtFV1mt0/видео.html And about the board being visible, I painted the bottom of my favorite board with neon fluorescent paint to make it visible after I almost lost it one day. Well, I lost it a few years later anyway, left it on the parking lot... I hope this helps, man! :)

    • @davidsuzukiispolpot
      @davidsuzukiispolpot 2 года назад

      @@KitesurfingAcademy I WAS just a beginner when I posted. I have progressed very quickly (maybe 35 sessions now since water-starting) but I spent many years sailing, hanging off the wind, and struggling windsurfing so I probably have to learn much less than other people learning kiting. Or course there is a danger there since I am now trying to jump and I definitely don't have the hours in for kite control for the kite to always be where I expect it (which can be quite dangerous in a jump). About your solutions (1) Yes, I bought a Mystique stealth which is kind of like a fixed fireball (it doesn't move but has a fixed loop that I have to put the chicken loop through and then reconnect to the safety mechanism so no foul-hooking) 2: edging, yes you are correct, I was keeping the kite higher than other people. You are correct so I will check out your suggested series, although for now I have access only to snow-kiting. Thanks. BTW, I had so much wind experience with windsurfing that I subconsciously became aware of wind direction and strength through my ears. I didn't realize it, but when it was cold, I tried putting on a hood and things became very difficult.

      @@davidsuzukiispolpot Sooo true about the FEEL of the wind!!! Cannot agree more with you. It took me a while to get used to NOT feeling the ambient air... This is why I love to kitesurf in warmer climates - no wetsuit is needed! And where do you go snowkiting, I wonder?
