My guess on why BABA is no longer buying back above $100 per ADS: back in May this year, BABA completed the $5 billion convertible senior notes offering and would use that cash for share buyback. Under the notes, the conversion price would around $105 per ADS. Therefore, it wouldn't make much sense for BABA to use the borrowed money to buy back above $105 and only to convert them back later at $105 -- that would be a money-losing deal. Applause to the BABA management for being discipline and re-starting buyback to take advantage of the temporary drop in stock price. It doesn't necessarily mean that BABA management thinks the share is "not worth it above $100". Rather, it will leave it to the market to push the stock price above $100 and may use other means (than share buyback) to reward shareholders (e.g. bigger dividend).

Don't US large cap companies buy shares back at high prices because management is obsessed with stock price due to their stock-based compensation packages? Good for them, not as much for shareholders? I like Baba's approach.

I don't believe that BABA believes its stock is not worth over $100. I think they just believe that the discount they are waiting for dictates the $100 price given the current market conditions. I'm sure shareholders do not want to hear this, but the stock staying cheap or crashing again is the best thing that can happen for them given the buyback initiative in place.

China is in trouble - although it's not immediate. China trade is very dependent on the West, which over the last 5 years china has been severing. New investments into china have essentially stopped (this is why china is making it 'easier' to invest in thier market.) The goal is now to have the people invest in the economy rather than housing. 4.6% in impossible to verify. They are in depression - and this crash will be felt the world over. The only question is can this last another 10-20 years.

Wow! That is completely irrational. If you have questions about the number, you don't just decide to accept it because we can't do any analysis. If we don't. How about you? Try looking into the components of the number. Maybe ask yourself why Masters and PhD graduates are taking jobs as food delivery drivers? Maybe ask why Chinese students overseas are getting calls from their parents saying I'm sorry we can't afford next year's tuition you'll have to come home. Don't be lazy. You can't significantly reduce the components of a GDP number and still come up with the same number. Math doesn't work that way. If the deepest analysis you can do is headlines in the Wall Street journal on CNBC you should leave the market immediately before you get hurt.

4.6% is good considering healthcare only makes up 7% of their gdp. In comparison to US gdp which is 18%. XD

Be on the lookout for Alibaba's earnings report. Their net income is going to explode. For years they've been taking writeoffs on their asset holdings as the chinese market is crunched. Now, their earnings will look ultra inflated. Quarter ending 09/30/2024? Look at the Chinese equity indexes at that time, massive peak. They will be recording huge gains in their equity holdings which will boost the E behind their PE significantly.

Gotta think about the stock connect too. Those that bought in mainland during those massive volume first week in the stock connect saw a 30% gain in a couple weeks. They dumped with momentum, and I expect us to return higher soon.

Check out the BABA share buybacks. They stopped buying after 25th of September when the price went above 100 USD per ADS. They bought shares again when it dipped below 100 last Thursday. 100 USD is probably a strong support level now.

If the US had 4.6, AMZN would be at 350$. Everything is relative, the number is great but the expectations are greater. I can’t buy more BABA, as it’s almost 50% of my portfolio but everything that happens with Chinese stocks all these years is nonsense.
