Finding Forstner (Bits): French Cleat Style
We're diving into a practical woodworking project: making a French cleat holder for Forstner bits and step drill bits. This simple DIY storage solution is perfect for organizing a workshop and consolidating drill bits while keeping the bits easily accessible.
I show how I designed and built a custom French cleat holder using salvaged plywood, which is the best material for the job because it was free and doesn’t have to be attractive.

    I don't know why RUclips thought I needed to see this video. But it popped up due to some algorithm. I don't intend this to be disrespectful or "mean." I have been a woodworker for more than 70 years. I design and build furniture. I know my way around power equipment. But I have to say that I have seldom seen a more frightening collection of poor shop practices and dangerous behaviors. I don't think you realize how much danger you are in of a very serious accident. From sawing apart your inserts (held in a rickety vice on a sketchy-looking work bench) with several vacuum hoses about to be penetrated by the saw, to using a router table on the floor while you are crouched down in an unstable stance. To that whole fiasco with those crude inserts. Even the manufacturer-supplied metal insert gives me hives as it appears so poor-fitting and loose. All your equipment looks to be of the lowest possible quality, with all the shortcomings of such gear. The appearance of your shop is consistent with your lack of craftsmanship and understanding of materials and machines. Cluttered, dirty, disorganized and a breeding ground for an accident or some disaster. At least take some time to clean and organize your work space and get some training before you really get injured. Rich

      Did you miss the opened toe sandals in the shop? I disagree with you on the equipment being low quality. Old Craftsman band saw, Dewalt contracter saw w/ CMT blade, and Ryobi router table are all fine. I agree with you about the clutter and sketchy shop practices.

    • @PeladoCreations
      @PeladoCreations 10 дней назад

      I'm definitely a newcomer to woodworking , especially relative to your experience. My equipment is certainly not top of the line. I acquired most of the equipment within the past year through second (or third) hand sources. I then refurbished that equipment to the best of my meager abilities to serve my purposes. The shop is messier than I'd like. Part of the reason for that is earlier this year, I tore out the old workbench and pegboard that came with the house and built the existing workbench, shelving, and French cleat system - mostly from reclaimed wood. I'm still in the process of building out storage systems. Another contributing factor to the messy shop is all the reclaimed wood I've acquired that I intend to use for various projects in the future. I don't purport to be a fine craftsman. Members of my family have long lived by a motto my grandfather used to say: " Good enough for who it's for." Though I often fall into that line of thinking, I am trying to get better with each project. Part of getting better is improving my safety practices. I don't want to endanger myself or others. Part of the reason I included the poor decisions in the video is so that other, similarly inexperienced hobbyists don't make the same mistakes I did. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts with me. I hope there's more to like in the next video the algorithm delivers to you.

      Sometimes I slip on the sandals when going out to the garage, not anticipating working on any projects but then get started on something. Thanks for calling that out - should be more conscientious about that. I do try to get decent equipment, even though it is used. I got that Ryobi router table (with a Ridgid router) from a pawn shop years ago but didn't start using it until somewhat recently. Found that the stock fence wasn't good, so added the MDF fence.

    I used to have that same bandsaw. It's not a bad saw so long as you keep it in good adjustment and respect its limits. Wish I still had it. It was sold at an estate auction my mom held after dad died. The saw wasn't supposed to be sold as it was mine. But I was busy answering questions on some equipment being sold by the other auctioneer and by the time I found out it had been sold whoever bought it had already taken it and left. It had been a Christmas present from my parents and it meant a lot to me. Best wishes to you.

      So sorry for you, man. I just got this one off of Facebook Marketplace a few weeks ago. An older couple was moving and didn't want to move the band saw. I was impressed with how detailed the owner's manual is. And it seems like a pretty good band saw after everything is calibrated properly. My Marketplace feed has shown me several other Craftsman band saws (either the same or very similar models) since buying this one. While it wouldn't carry the same sentimental value as the unit you got from your dad, I wonder if you'd be able to find and use a similar model.

    Why did you add the auxiliary fence?

    • @PeladoCreations
      @PeladoCreations 2 месяца назад

      The original fence had a gouge in it, presumably from the prior owner(s) using the fence too closely to the blade. As I slide a workpiece along the fence, the workpiece hits the gouge and doesn't stay straight. That's bad because then the cut gets messed up and there is increased risk of the piece binding up and getting stuck. And I don't want to have to exert undue force on the workpiece when there's a spinning blade right there. The auxiliary fence allows me to have a smooth surface for the workpieces to glide along without obstructions.

      @@stevesiefken2696 It's been a good saw for me so far, but I just got it used about a week and a half ago. I've got another video I'm working on in which I build a mobile cart for the saw with dust collection and outfeed support, so stay tuned!

    How well does the saw cut?

      The 7491 had a Diablo blade that I figured had been used a fair amount so I didn't even test it out. I swapped it out with a relatively new CMT blade that I had in the 744 and it cuts well. I was concerned that the issue with the rear rail would cause problems but it seems fine so far. But I'll still switch it out once the new rear rail arrives.
