I agree with you. I tried several early on and I really don't like them. Although I do think Fat Lou's Liquor (another video) had some charm. I prefer wood. If something has to be cast, I prefer resin.

Thanks for all the comments. I am glad you are enjoying the videos. I really don't know how long it took to build this. Maybe 5-10 hours per week for six weeks. Most of these kits are from mom-and-pop shops. I am pretty sure this company was just a husband/wife operation (no longer in operation). I am guessing they build one prototype and then start producing the kits. So there is not a lot of quality control. Also, they typically produce about one kit per year. South River Model Works kits are expensive but they are huge. They are also labor intensive to produce and they did not have the computer technology available today. I think the complexity of this kit really pushed their technology envelope with all the building angles. The only thing I really hated at this price point was the printed brick wall. Not trying to make excuses, but just how I see the reality of the situation. If you pay $40 for a Walthers kit and build it in four hours, is that really any better value than paying $400 for a craftsman kit and building it in 40 hours? As you stated on my Walthers warehouse, it lacks mojo. This kit has a lot of character.

I guess my point is this, this kit is expensive, I don’t expect perfection, but I do expect crystal clear instructions, and parts that fit and coherent. Your video shows a stunning lack of directions, not enough materials, an in some areas inferior materials..my guess’s is many people attempting to build this model would have given up and either threw it away or simply smashed it. I really like your videos..thx…chrus

You might consider obtaining a set or two of small twist drill bits from Micro Mark or another vendor. Drilling a small pilot hole through the mounting holes on ground throw will make it easier to drive those spikes home.

Thanks for checking in. I am doing quite well but quite busy. I took up a different hobby and have not worked on the train in quite some time. I have a half-finished FSM kit on the workbench. It's been sitting there for at least six months. Maybe this winter I will get back to it. I do not have a patreon. I do all the train stuff and videos purely as a hobby and I really don't want to have any commitments that make them feel like work so I wouldn't feel right taking money from others for it. Anyway, I already have a stack of kits to build.

@asdasx392 that's great to hear... I was a bit worried. You hinted at possible health problems with your voice being different in a few videos. A confession... because of your videos, I made the step and purchased my first "craftsman " kit. Now, I've built nearly 20 of them... and LOVE them. Your videos inspired me to take that terrifying step of purchasing an "expensive (over plastic kits)" wooden kit. But, it's what you love in the hobby. Anyway, glad to hear you're doing ok... look forward toward new content my friend.

Well, since you mentioned it, I will spill the beans for anyone reading this comment. I had throat cancer two years ago and lost my voice temporarily because of treatment. Enough time has passed that it no longer seems like a big deal. Once I started building the wood kits, the plastic kits just didn't look right on my layout. And I think they are similar in cost on a per-hour-build-time bases if you think about how many more hours you spend on them. Glad you took the leap.

David R Lentz, USA My niche is of 1:25th-scale plastic model assembly kits of vehicles (cars, tractor-trailer rigs, mobile, off-road construction, excavation, erection, etc., machinery, etc.) and the dioramas that visually envelop them in a wordless (usually; signage is an exception) narrative. Even so, I delight in learning of the techniques, kits, settings, etc., of others’ ventures. Some I would like to see in my preferred scale (G gauge’s richer cousin). You need make no apology for your “mistake” in assembling one of the buildings. With one eye visibly higher than the other, I cannot determine what actually is “straight” in terms of physical objects. It occasionally shows in my illustration work, especially pen & ink (or, fun with serious myopia, cranio-facial mal-alignment, etc., requiring that I bring my eyes to round 10 cm of the work surface to render with cold, achy, bony fingers exquisitely fine detail). I also grew up in what was (still is, the last I looked) a small, old farm house-in the middle of a small city, no less, even with a barn out back!-that almost was as asymmetrical as the Burrows, the “one-room shack” nigh a dozen storeys tall where the Weasleys dwelt in the Harry Potter motion picture series (2001-2011, Warner Bros). For that matter, I wish a model railroading company would make a series of “Buildings in Cinema”: the Burrows, cited above; the old mansion in Psycho (1960, Universal Pictures, Alfred Hitchcock, Bernard Herrmann); the house in Home Alone (1990, 20th Century Fox, Chris Columbus, John Williams); the Brady home, in The Brady Bunch television series (1969-1974, Paramount), the Bunkers residence in All in the Family (1971-1979, Studio 41, CBS Television City/Sony Pictures Studios), all in O gauge; Hogwarts Castle (as above, in the Harry Potter film series), the palace in Emerald City, and the fortress of the wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz (1939, MGM, Victor Fleming, King Vidor, Herbert Pope Stothart), all in the same gauge (HO, N, Z), for the constancy of scale.

You have not even come close to finishing. I am sticking with it, the rigging gets harder and harder, but worth it. I have added accents to the hull with algae and cannon smoke to the hull and other places. I am close to the sails and sticking to it. When I am done, I will build a floating shelf and highlight with a light. Should look pretty good.

I built this exact model about 10 years ago and by far, the rigging was both the most difficult and when done, the most rewarding. I decided if I ever did another similar model, I could save a lot of frustration when trying to reach in to the center at the base of the masts for tying off by starting with extra long "ropes" and first tying off to the center. This avoids trying to reach in to secure that end where even with long tweezers, As you mentioned, I also don't believe the instructions are in the optimal order as doing as much as you can to each mast before installing it would be a huge advantage. I often had to just stop and walk away and actually cool off so I didn't just smash that thing to pieces. Like you, this was my very first model of this complexity. I had only built cars until then with one being a larger indie car with lots more detail like wires, brake lines, suspension etc...(my kitten at the time destroyed it). I am a bit of a perfectionist, and even though nobody would ever notice, I wanted each rope to be attached where the instructions said to attach them. That also helps keep you from having bad angles where ropes rub against each other. Attaching the sails with all that rigging in the way was almost as difficult as the rigging itself. If I do another ship like this, I also want to throw away the plastic sails and create fabric sails with eyelets. The plastic sails tear when you try to pierce them so you can run the "rope" through them at the ends and I think at the top, where they hang, it would look more realistic if there were rope loops for it to hang on, but again, the plastic tears. I might even leave a few of the top sails "furled" just to show how that looks as well, but full sails is 50% of the appeal of this type of ship model. A lot of people don't build this model completely and leave off the sails (like you did). I think the sails, and in particular the extra sails that protrude out on the port and starboard sides, (can't remember their names) really make this model pop turning a good model into an exceptional model and should be installed. The sails are a little easier than the rigging, so why not finish it? The sails are included and should not be left off in my opinion. It took me about 400 hours to build this model. I took lots of pictures but in the end, gave it to my cousin when I moved as it's way too delicate to move. I broke a few repairable things just moving 5 hours away. Overall, nice build but it's sad you put in so much time and effort only to cut corners at the end. The sagging rigging is very noticeable. Also, the rack near the base of the masts looks like you only utilized a few of the pegs when that thing should be full with each line assigned to a specific peg and after it's attached, there needs to be a spiral of the slack rope underneath it for realism. I'm not going to pick it apart, just wish you had cut so many corners after so much time already spent.

Thanks for the comments. Actually, I purchased the kit opened at a swap meet and it did not have the sails so I never intended to add the sails. Of course, by the time I got to the rigging, I could have easily bought another kit to get the sails. I think one of my concerns was that the cheap plastic sails would actually make the kit look worse than without the sails. I would like to try another sailing ship (maybe one from Heller), and I might include the sails next time. I knew sagging ropes would be a problem. I even thought of making a jig to hold the masts in place throughout rigging. Every rope was tight when I added it, but as I added other ropes, previous ropes would sag as the masts got stressed in a different direction. Of course my build has flaws. They always do. But I am glad it turned out as well as it did, and that years later, people still watch the video.

Started this model after a serious operation, was down for a few months. I did the hull and stalled halfway thru the cannons on the lower level. Several years later, I have started the build again, since I have some time on my hands. This video, was helpful and taking your time, working on it a couple hours each day, literally, it is a string at a time and tweaking some of that. Still working on it and each day, see the progress and get excited for the final result. I have cut out the sails and glued cotton cloth to them, which are slightly soiled, so look like they have been in a battle. Also added rust and gunsmoke in various spots, for authenticity of battle.

I would like to say thank you though I know I'm only discovering your channel very late and hope you get to read my comment. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos and your builds. I don't think I'm exaggerating in saying that I probably enjoy your kit videos the most from every other channel. You take the opportunity to build up very nice, famous craftsman kits - and present to someone like me a good detailed review and understanding of the pro and cons of each kit and each manufacturer. Frankly I really enjoy how your videos are long but have space to brief so that you're able to talk through your build and your thoughts of the construction. As others have mentioned, I also take great comfort (and highly appreciate) of your frank comments and even your admission of mistakes. I think too often, social media presenters only present "finished products" or tops tips. Often when I'm building, I have a sense of "what the heck am I doing here?" Your videos teach me a lot but also give me great encouragement. There was a point when for some reason I wanted to throw away my entire line of Vallejo washes but after seeing your videos, I've decided to give them a second try and they are working well - I honestly can't remember what my unhappiness was with them. In any case, I wish you the best and the best of health. I do hope you continue building and continue posting videos like these. They are really well done. Thank you and best wishes from Singapore.
