    I used to love riding on these buses in Colchester back in the 70's when I was primary school age. I used to wonder how the driver changed gear without a clutch.The sound is unique and evokes great memorise too. I also used to wonder why the indicator control was so big and red! I was an odd child lol 😂

    im no expert (!) but his driving and steering looked totally fine to me considering no power assist, and trying to get a very long bus round some quite tight bends there. Smooth driving and nice and easy on the gear box too. The only weird thing is should the left wiper be dragging over the central dividing strip on the windscreen? It can't do it much good.

    • @leonardbutcher8555
      @leonardbutcher8555 2 года назад

      It shouldn't be, its illegal to drive without a working speedo, I used to work in the repair dept of a bus company. Once upon a time, the police used to think that a normal service bus on a town route could not be guilty of breaking the speed limit due to its high number of stops and the closeness of the stops. These days however, buses are used less so the distance between actual stops could be reasonable and speed cameras can and do catch buses speeding.

    Nice drive, sounds great !!! . When I was growing up we mainly had the direct air shift in the leopards and the Atlanteans, just before the government got rid of them, we started to get the Atlanteans with this type of shifter. When I was a kid I was more captivated in how the pneumatic type worked,, I always wanted one.. and now I rebuild them many many years later it's wonderful, to see they are still going, all the hard work that goes into them .

      @@captainscutter Your right Mike I've listened to her again, I'm either loosing it or those noisy passengers or proberly both, but I like the way she was driven with respect, Eastern county buses used to have undercover inspectors travelling on the REs and VRs to make sure the drivers weren't pushing the gears through to fast and stretching the bands in the gearbox, if driven like the driver in the video thy would last and be reliable for years, thank you Mike for putting me right and posting these great videos, ps the 680 Leyland wasn't a bad engine at all but the Gardner was the gaffers engine out the two.

      @@paulwilson3083 .... Thankyou for your comments... that was me driving ! I am very lucky that some owners trust me to drive their pride and joy. Southdown used to have driving instructors out to check the driving in the late 70s and early 80s. The Gardner is a superb engine...but always like the power and noise of the Leyland 0.680

    • @paulwilson3083
      @paulwilson3083 4 года назад

      @@captainscutter Believe me Mike those bus owners wouldn't let you near the steering wheel if they thought you weren't at the high standard required to drive them, I shudder when I watch young drivers of today, if they started with under powered Gardner engines and David Brown gearboxes they would learn how to read the road ahead and keep them rolling instead of living on the brakes especially when going down dips when they've got to get up the other side, there a shambles, modern vehicles in themselves have lowered the standards of drivers, I just can't get drivers with the right skills anymore, thank you so much for posting these great videos Mike, kindest regards. Paul.

  • @paulwilson3083
    @paulwilson3083 4 года назад

    That's what I like to see, a Gardner engine not using too many revs through the gears, as the driver obviously knows they are a long stroke engine designed to run slow and that's where there best torque is, the gearbox was used perfecly as well, if rushed the bands in them stretch, that was a treat to watch, thank you, your bus will last year's with that sort of professional care.

      RE mk 1 flat front top left corner off drivers side window is curved like the mw,s pull lever hand brake not the little dash board mounted gas hand brake, it most be a very early RE bus green paint in the driver's cabin not the cream kind off formica and the shorter flat windscreen old still wipers, remember seeing these in the 60,s in Gloucester when our family went over to Gloucester from Stroud in the car. a very early RE bus but it,s still has that re sound, i lived in Stroud at the time i was only a small kid at the time, in Seroud we had the older mw buses so bid Gloucester but they had these early type off RE buses, i youst to refer the Gloucester RE,s as Gloucester buses because they were mainly in Gloucester
