Nice general overview of these series of engines. The six cylinder engines are naturally balanced and should run smoother that would be their main advantage. The change to a cross flow cylinder head is not that big of a deal with a low RPM diesel engine design compared to a high revving naturally aspirated gasoline engine design because the engine is not being power limited by airflow usually. If your trying to hot rod one of these engines the cross flow design might become more useful though. I don't like turbo charged gasoline engines because in my way of thinking you could just put in a larger displacement naturally aspirated engine and get the same power with less complicated plumbing and expense and heat under the hood, however in a diesel engine I will concede that a turbo is nearly essential just due to the fuel itself being higher in calorific value it needs the extra oxygen to burn the fuel efficiently or else you tend to get black smoke out the exhaust and less power than you would expect for a given displacement because you'd have to use a shorter injection stroke on a naturally aspirated one or smaller injector pistons to get the right fuel air mixture. A turbo basically increases the displacement of an engine in a way because the turbo adds a lot more air pressure and flow than an equivalent non turbo one I am not sure how the little 2.5 L made just as much power as the 3.0L one though I don't think it is just in the cross flow cylinder head design but I don't really know Mercedes diesel engines well enough to make an informed guess but I would assume there is a better camshaft profile to go along with the revised cross flow head design. Also I don't like turbo charged gasoline engines because the added power puts more stress on the engine parts compared to just using a larger naturally aspirated engine of equal power output, so your turbo charged gas engine will fail sooner. The modern trend of putting large 4 cylinder turbo charged engines in US built P/U trucks is unfortunate and dumb and is over all bad for our environment but it is the EPA that forced this path. Turbos for racing are a great thing though but race teams have the income to replace engines and rebuild them with all new parts very regularly.

Question, if I wanted to swap my om606 turbo engine in to my chevelle wagon, would you recommend a aftermarket ecu and harness or a built mechanical pump to replace the edc pump? I'm still trying to decide and weighing the pros and cons of each option. Thanks for the element information.

Great subject. Can you tell your opinion about puting together an OM616 (240D) with a small turbo and PES 4M pump from OM601? Do you offer external ADA for PES 4M pump? And I am not afraid of blowing up the engine, they are plentifull and I would not go big with pressure and fuel... OM616 loves to rev but I can not keep up with the traffic.

Awesome. Which MB 5 cylinder engine would you recommend as a good swap candidate for a mid 90's Ford F-150 pickup? The factory 5.8L V8 needs work, but it's such a gas hog, I'd rather spend the money on a better engine - hence a MB diesel powerplant. Not looking for a HD powerhouse either, I'm ok with the smaller 5cyl vs a 6. Thanks!!

Good video, but incorrect on the oil feed. the oil feed is in the center of the shaft. what you pointed out is the oil drainback.

Hi Shane, just got round to doing this and fitting your fuel shutoff delete, would just point out the barb on the shutoff delete is too small for 3/8th 10mm fuel hose, it's the same size as the stock barbs haha. All works BTW but throwing up an engine electronics code despite leaving the fuel shutoff connected electrically. Will investigate tomorrow. I haven't' put the manifold back on yet so might be the other vacuum lines throwing the error.

Those are some really low stock numbers... 100hp?

On your web I saw nothing for the om613 engine. It’s a 3.2 liters, the successor of the om606 with common rail just before Mercedes got into electronic sensors and stuff in the om648.

To my knowledge this kit will hardly make a difference over jus a stage 1.5 ecu from Sean Treacy because it does not get rid of the cat which is literally sucking up any were from 40 to 50 hp from dyno runs I've seen.

One thing you may have missed, the 617 was about 50 Kilograms heavyer than the 603 and a lot thirstyer.

See that factory band clamp you left on there if that gets bent out of shape or has any kind of back pressure from a clogged cat or vibration that will pop off .you want to band clamp that also.

My question what if you want to keep your stock ecu due to future situations and you want the car back too factory settings due too selling it or something goes wrong with the turbo and you don t want to be without a car also.my only question on buying a ecu.

Got this kit a month ago, just installed it and plan to do a shakedown soon (sorry Shane I haven’t had the chance to sent the ecu back yet) This kit is as easy as it gets for a install. Boost builds around 2250 to 2500 rpm. And sings above 2750. If you have a RHD vehicle you will need to chop and weld the downpipe to fit around the steering column. I recommend this kit for anyone looking to jazz up their daily w210 om606.

It looks like a pressure controlled turbo. How well does the ECU play with that setup?
