As a senior unabashed geek, I'm interested in finding out how things work, and how to make them better. In this channel I like to share the things I've found.
Fall pool maintenance tips
Getting fallen leaves out of your pool is easier with a net than with the flat skimmer pool companies usually throw in "for free" - but there's a trick to it. There's also a trick to getting leaves off the top step where leaves often get stuck and resist capture. Finally, if you have a safety cover, wind movement, and in colder climates snow accumulation and melting, can tear the fabric where it is pulled over any sharp corners - this idea will keep it going for many years.

76 is just a number

With another birthday, my 76th, now complete, I wanted to celebrate not only the techie things I can still do, but also the wonderful things my body is able to do. Adding senior yoga sessions to my exercise routine has been a game-changer - years of weight training and cardio kept my body from getting worse, but made few improvements. Yoga changed that. I'm proud of the things I'm able to do, a...

Space efficient storage for squares

I needed a place to hang a couple of framing squares and a four-foot drywall square without taking up too much wall space. A few shallow slots in a couple of blocks keep everything safe and neat and takes away very little storage space.
Easy, painless brush bundling
Просмотров 73Год назад
I used to struggle with getting tree and bush trimmings ready for yard waste pickup. Then I devised a simple way to tame the unruly piles while I tied them up. Using an old outdoor mat (or any sturdy material) it's simple to reduce the brush to a roll that's easy to tie, because the string is already there. Use compostable string, not plastic.
Pool pole fix
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.Год назад
When the plastic couplings broke on both my pool poles, I knew they wouldn't glue successfully, so I purchased a new pole. Then my clever wife found a replacement kit for around $5 CDN, so now I have three pool poles! Installing the kit is easy enough, except for getting the old glued-on part off. Using a plastic plumbing pipe as a tool prevents possible damage to the aluminium pole. Here's how...
Mending a broken pool skimmer net
Просмотров 369Год назад
When plastic breaks in an area subject to stress, gluing or plastic welding are unlikely to be successful. I used existing parts from the net, and a small section of the long pool pole to create a strong replacement which has been in use for several weeks with zero problems.
Capture all the floating debris in your pool skimmer

If there's stuff floating in your pool skimmer, you'll want to settle it in the basket, not allow it to get to the pump and filter. This is a 10 second trick to capture it all.

Great video!! Thanks for posting this.
Great videos! Did you use the Nikon Z50 for this one?
Thank you! Had to do some searching! It turns out this one was on a D500 with a 150-600 SIgma lens @440mm. I believe the D500 and Z50 have the same sensor.
Cool video

Where to buy coupling?
My local pool store had it. See my other answer earlier.
No NC kaise lagaye
It happens all the time. Some of these pool installers have no idea what they are doing when installing the pump/filter plumbing/valves.
Hi Unabashed Geek, I have exactly the same pole and am looking for a replacement cam lock. It woud be much appreciated if you could let me know where the replacement cam can be purchased for $5. I have just received a cam lock from Amazon Canada (Pentair EZ lock R191296) and it seems a bit shorter. It would be much appreciated to find out where your replacement part came from. At the least, if you know the manufacturer? Much thanks again.
I imagine there are a number of versions. Mine came from Pioneer Pools in Oakville (Ontario) - our local pool place - and it was in generic packaging with no part number or anything. Mine was shorter than the original, but worked fine!
Thank you, I will look them up and call them. @@unabashedgeek
Hello again. I have received the generic cam lock. Watched your video again, I see you removing the "old glue" but you never replaced with any fresh glue. I would prefer to glue the top part to pole. Do you have any recommendation for what glue might work well? I promise this will be my last question. Thank you very much.
@@jlopes8090 I never did add glue and it seems to be fine. If you find it slips (it might when you're pulling, never on a push) I would suggest a polyurethane glue (e.g. Gorilla glue) or hot glue,
HI! for Over a Year, Hours & Days, stupidly looking for parts that do Not exist is so Frustrating, more credit to 'search OCD'. haha I Too came cross Pentair parts, Except at 1.25", or fact other companies Never list Size, [just Pole Type]. Sad fact, Pruning Saw, same Lock, Not size. What happened to Repair parts vs New? Main Issue, WHO Manufactures Parts for this type of Lock, and Why, it seems, Only Window's & Pools, when i know Other equipment use them. errr Search results PER: 'Wording', is mostly where i Fail, but now [have] 'Worldly' knowledge of stuff i never really searched. lol sorry for Rant, Ideas welcome. Tho, i see issue[?] will GLUE Split Nut. [JB Weld] ... Until next time. *Cheers!*
a little oil from time to time
Yeah, I tried that, but then it gets on your hands.
Will this fix a pole with an internal twist cam?
I haven't got one of those, so I'm not sure. It's possible this could replace an internal mechanism, if the poles were the right diameters.
here first before this goes viral are you a virgo bc this feels very virgo

An amazing feat to reach 76 in such condition. Hats off to you and happy birthday 👍🎈
Thank you!
Its because you are a little man 🤣🤣🤣

Good one haha
That is fine for a few cuts, but not recommended for larger projects. Dust is an issue with this method. I often see workers using dry dusty methods which force people in the nearby area to have to breathe their dust. So, it is good to have consideration for the health of other people.
The rods are gauenteed for lifetime
Only if you have the original bill. I got my Bowflex at Costco and Costco bills just look like 100's of other bills, so 20 years later, if I have it, I can't find it. I've tried, believe me.
Please show more rowing and other skills.
Nice video but the title could be more accurate
Thanks for the video; Can you fit a 50# Rod to replace a 10# or 5# Rod?
No, each position has a hole which only fits one size rod. My system has the extension with two extra 50s. If you don't already have that, you might be able to add it.
@@unabashedgeek i am also wondering if this is possible.. I feel that you could just drill the hole a little bigger (Diameter of the 50lb rod hole) and then it may fit. Not sure though because there is a slot on the bottom of the rods that may or may not be necessary.(im aware it keeps the rods from spinning but they are screwed in place. I may attempt this someday because i would like to have 3 sets of 50lb rods. Maybe someone could 3d print a power rod block with 3 sets of 50lb rods instead of two sets. Im fine with losing the 5lb or 10lb rods.
@@rambojackson9082 I haven't looked at the block for a while, so my memory is rusty. The block that holds the rods is, I think, plastic and it may not be solid. Drilling may break through the walls. I also find the 5 and 10 rods useful for increasing the resistance for some exercise by a moderate amount, so I'm not adding too much in one go.
Hahaha the pinky 🤙
Thanks for making this video. I have a similar project and this helped out a great deal!
LOL a comedy show too! thanks for the video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Comedy show?
Was the leak around the lid or at the outlets?
Sorry about the delay, I used to get emails alerting me to comments. It was from the outlet. A very slow leak.
You should always cut with the blade on the left side.
How about turning all the used rods 180 degrees to offset some of the wear bending puts on them?
The screw that holds them will not prevent the rod from turning, so it ends up back in the same place.
I love you.
I have a Bowflex Power Pro that I purchased about 25 years ago. It has served me well. I use it 3 times a week and have purchased new bows (50's & 30's) every 4-5 years from Bowflex direct. I found that the larger bows do loose some strength over time so this helps me in my overall workouts. When all the gyms closed because of the virus, all my friends were bummed out. I didn't have that problem since my Bowflex was waiting for me any time I wanted. If someone is looking to purchase one, check out Ebay. People are selling theirs because of lack of use for a very reasonable price.
At my age, I'm finding that I need replacement parts every 4-5 years as well - for my body!
Slowing down the blade with your fingers is pretty dangerous
The weight of the blade gives it enough momentum to unscrew the securing nut (however tight it is put on) so using a gloved finger after it's turned off is safer than having a spinning blade fall off.
Agreed, if blade snagged that glove your cooked😢
Hand Chisel them, way more fun
We laid a 20x20 paved courtyard and path down the driveway in our first new house, and rented a stone guillotine to cut the edges. Believe me, I never want to hand cut stone ever again!
Nice job, I'm most certain a pool company would have charged a minimum of $200.00 U.S dollars.
Thanks. I'm pretty sure a pool company would have wanted to replace the valve and all the piping around it.
Try 400 plus. Covid prices. I did mine myself, replaced the o rings. Works like a charm for 7 bucks.
@@Mike1122. Can you tell me where you bought the o-rings? I have a few leaking.
Good video! I have an older Bowflex Xtreme and even less access room at the bottom of the rod box.
Thanks Bobby. My job wasn't as tough as I thought it would be. Sometimes I spend too much time worrying for nothing! I think I mentioned that I've seen videos where the whole machine is tipped over to get access.
Good stuff. I will try to get rid of some excess stone on my sculpture. Some Poseidon like figure. It just weighs so much!!! Thx!
Hi, I wanna about cutting big stones
OMG just rent a quick cut and make your life safe.
This looks dangerous. You should spin the blade so the dust flies towards you so if the machine bites it wont fly towards you.
Thanks for your suggestion. Grinders are not reversible, and besides, you REALLY would not want to have stone grit and who knows what else flying towards you!
@@unabashedgeek If you look att bigger hand operated stone cutters they all operate like that. The disk spins so all dust goes at the direction of the operator. They would cause accidents otherwise.
@@MrApaHotel OK, I looked at a bunch of videos including safety tips, and now I appreciate what you are saying. Thank you. By simply turning the tool so the blade is on the opposite side, the dust kicks in the opposite direction. I had never seen or read that one way or the other was any better, and I'm pretty sure the guys who did my landscaping blew the dust away from themselves. That seems to be the better way until you think or read about kickback. I will take your advice next time I cut with my grinder.
@@unabashedgeek sry but you are wrong. If dust is not flying towards you, youy can get a kick back from the grinder and for the note your in short pants... See that vid for safety (at 30mn 20sec in it) : ruclips.net/video/oJRSkBSb5S8/видео.html Anyway thx for your vid.
@@elmanoux I suspect you didn't read my previous answer to the end. After doing more research, I came to agree that I was doing it the wrong way, and said so. I also changed the video description and my website. Apart from that, I hope you got something from my video.
Hi there... Which grinder did you use? I'm trying to figure out how much power I need mine to be in order to handle that much stone.
it's a 4.5" 5 amp - 054-7120-4 - pretty much the smallest they had. Certainly the cheapest! Just take it easy, let the wheel cut at it's own pace.
I need to cut a stone for an aquascape and your video was just the ticket! Thank you,.
Glad it helped.
Where did you find replacement pulleys?
I got them from the manufacturer. But that was a few years ago.
@@David_Powell They're hard to find these days. I can pick up Bowflex machines so cheap, that I bought a 1 for use and 2 to keep stealing parts. I'm a bit of a scavenger, but I'm looking pretty good these days. Thanks for the help.
