Fat, old and broke down retired firefighter, paramedic and sometimes safety consultant. I have always drilled deeply into Biblical apologetics and have taught the subject to both adults and kids. I am a huge aviation nerd though my IRL time is low. I love keeping the beehive I started a couple of years ago and I'd like to thank those that have watched my disparate videos and have subscribed despite my long time absence. I hope to become more active on here and though I'm massively uninteresting, I hope to be that old guy that weaves his yarns and maybe, just maybe, entertain just a little.
F-Sim Space Shuttle: A Vanity Post
Not particularly exciting but to date the only PERFECT score I've received. This is an addictive app that uses real (edited) audio from an Atlantis mission. It's HUD is accurate as is it's flight dynamics.
I've read that astronauts have to perform a minimum of 1000 safe landings in the SLT (Shuttle Landing Trainer) aircraft before they're qualified to fly any part of the reentry or approach. So I'm never going to fly a shuttle... I mean I couldn't qualify and they're not flying anymore so there's that.
Being an aviation and space nerd, I love this app and it gives me a small inkling of what's involved in the ultimate dead stick landing. Think about it, in this video I go through 50,000 feet...

F-Sim Shuttle Landing - Less Than Ideal Conditions

Decided to throw in an overcast, at night, with a crosswind gusting to 16 knots and off the right nose at about 30 degrees. I also lowered the visibility to 10 miles and increased density altitude so that it was sluggish. It was pretty a pretty active flight trying to keep the guidance queue in parameters. I touched down on the bar but about 15' right. Score was "Good" at 525K and change. This ...

This was my first trip out in the new DoDo Sim 206 for FSX. It starts and concludes at 52F which is my local airport. When I landed, my mouth was dry and my hands cramped. No music, no editing, just flyin'.

geritol
Thank you for that!
Wow, this was so amazing! Appreciate this historical offering Kyle!! Have a blessed day🎉
Thank you! You too!
You are a quick responder (firefighter) I got to fly in a parachute seat on a C130 from East to Colorado Springs. Pretty cool. You cracked me up one night while watching AWOW!! Very funny. Have a super 4th, I am patriotic!!
Boyington turned in to a bad alcoholic.
Up here in Washington state we have a dog crap college...the university of Washington . pappy boyington went there. They chose to dishonor him back in 2007 calling him a rich white racist who killed people for a living.
My grandfather was George Paxton, he also flew in the AVG, one of the last to leave, he acquired the name Pappy because he was the oldest after Pappy Boyington left the squadren.
Good perform.. sorry i'm late for dinner..
and you save ten thousand dollar bills...
Just ran across this video while browsing. Gotta add my 2 cents: went through the MarCad program as a cadet (L/Cpl rank) in '60-'61. Got my wings in Dec '61 and was assigned to MAG-12 in Hawaii. Upon arrival there I was assigned to VMA-214 Blacksheep. After checking in I was told to get ahold of a book "Baa Baa Blacksheep" as a required reading item for all newbies checking in. That was my introduction to Pappy's bio. Long story short". Did a 3 year tour as a Blacksheep and went overseas to Japan in '65 and from there down to Nam on my 1st tour there. While there, Pappy somehow finagled a ride to ChuLai where the Blacksheep were flying combat missions in the A4 Skyhawk. I had the privilege of shaking his hand at a happy hour one night. Every pilot there at that time made sure to meet and greet Pappy. It was a great morale boost for him to be there. What a treat to actually shake the hand of a legend in my time. Will never forget that. RIP and Semper Fidelis, Pappy!😢
Great book! Read it many times as a kid. Still remember most of it.
I watched Black sheep every episode. His record and his mentality had to be rough in those days. May he RIP . 🙏
I shook Pappy Boyington’s hand at the Reno Air Races in 1986.
Dude humbled two successful guys just by showing up.
He will always be a hero im my book, no matter how much revisionists want to degrade the man.
@tim2279, I see the All American patch in your avatar. What unit. I was C Battery, 1/319th FA FIST
@@KyleCowden HHC 82ND and 21st Chemical Company (ABN)
@@timf2279 Outstanding. One of my best buds at Bragg was there. I remember the material he shared with me when my clearance was upgraded. Fascinating stuff though I wouldn't want to be in that line. Probably the reason I didn't go HAZMAT when with Dallas. All the way Tim!
@KyleCowden 21st Chemical left div in 2009. The Army restructured and lightened the Div by removing non combat support units. If the Div needs a combat support unit, they just attach as needed. I believe 407 S&S and 3/4th ADA left as well and went to COSCOM.
@@timf2279 Thank you for the update. My time was over 40 years ago so we had that group (IIRC) 5th and 7th SF, 18th (non)Airborne Corps, 82nd Aviation Bn.. can't remember who else. Oh yeah, it was still Fort Bragg too.
This was sort of painful to watch. I hate to see people masquerading as heroes.
Greg Pappy Boyington USMC, Heaven is for Heroes, R.I.P.
Pappy was a true American hero!
Blacksheep is a unfair term used by people to tarnish a reputation. If you're ever called one, it means you're not, the people that call you one, they're the real blacksheep.
How the hell do you say people who lived into their 80’s died way too soon. Also Jeff McKay played bud roberts father for most of the episodes.
@billrobetson5895 , please forgive the ignorance but what show are you referring to? As far as saying someone's "gone too soon" it is a function of selfishness. My dad was 90 and I 62, and he was ready. But he went too soon. If someone is a staple of, say, your childhood or who otherwise colored your life, when they die it's like losing part of yourself.
Didn't know this until now, but I was in Marine Corps bootcamp Jan 1988' when Pappy Boyington died. What a great Marine Corps Pilot. Lived a hard life after the war.
An outstanding American that never hesitated to perform his duty when called to do so. RIP and a firm salute, Major.
Pilots are typically short.
This was fun to watch. Thank you!
The real Patty Boynton made guest appearances on the TV show Black Sheep Squadron. That is the only reason why I recognized him.
The only time in my life I wanted to be number 2.
You may talk o' gin and beer when you're quartered safe out here. But of all the men who flew this was the finest man we knew. Legend!
Greg "Pappy" Boyington had to deal with the dreaded "Bird" while as a POW for 2 years...damn
Kitty Carlisle asked very good questions,
Ralph Bellamy from “Trading Places”. Randolph and Mortimer.
I read several books about the fight in the pacific and Pappy was a great pilot but a hopeless alcoholic and liar. He often made up kills that were recorded. His time in the Japanese prison camp was questionable because he didn't seem to have the same malnutrition affects as the other prisoners when he was released. When he was released and found out another aviator in the Pacific had shot down more planes than him he made up a story that he had shot down 3 more planes on his last flight or something like that. It was speculated he was drunk or hung over when he was shot down. He could do one think right but that was impaired buy his life long alcoholism. After his stint in China his commander recommended he was unfit for duty do to his drinking.
Looking back this actually sucks. You have an intro, you have questions and finally the result… BUT …that’s Boyington, at least give him a kind of outro!
The sixties version with host Garry Moore did exit interviews and or demos. Brief but two games with that extra bit beat the crud out of three games.
I met Pappy Boyington, and 1981 I was 15 years old and my father told me to take our dogs to a new groomer because our old groomer had moved away. He lived about two blocks from me in Fresno, California, where I grew up when I knocked on the door at 8 o’clock in the morning with the dogs beside me, this grumpy old man answer the door with a cigar hanging out of his mouth and a cup of coffee in his hand in a tank top T-shirt and boxer, shorts and gruffly said, what do you want ! That took me aback thinking I had the wrong house I said, I was told to bring my dogs here because someone was going to groom them today he turned his head over his shoulder and the oldest some woman I believed to be his daughter could’ve been his girlfriend saying it’s for you And walked away. The lady came over. It was very nice and polite took the dogs told me to come back about 4 o’clock and they would be done at 4 o’clock. I showed up and was reluctant to knock on the door because of the grouchy old man that morning, he answered the door again this time with a drink in his hand and he was a lot nicer. He invited me in and called to her that I was there. I looked on the back wall of the living room and saw all this World War II Japanese memorabilia on shelves I am mediately asked about it and he was very nice. I was glad to show it to me, we walked across the living room to get a closer look and I was in awe there were swords guns flags from World War II Japanese pictures of planes him standing in airplanes medals, and again I was in awe. I was a big fan of the show Baaba black sheep when I realized it was him I couldn’t believe it, I had met a real living legend later that afternoon I was talking to some friends telling them that I met pappy Boyington and he just left a few blocks away. They said I was full of shit and that that wasn’t true so to prove it we walked over and knocked on his door, in the afternoon of course I learned real quick. He is not a morning person or at least he gets nicer when he’s had a few drinks I thought he might get mad at me for bringing my friends but he didn’t mind. He invited us all in and he talked to us for about 30 minutes while drinking the whole time, he was a good man that was one of the highlights of my life.
A true hero! Of course I was a huge Black sheep fan!
Did you ever see the episode where he had a cameo as a visiting general? Robert Conrad, who owned and flew a Corsair, said it was humbling; and he was an arrogant son-of-a-gun.
He had an affinity to telling the truth. They said you had to take everything he said “with a pound of salt.”😹😹
😅I read a book he wrote about his war experience and he was very candid and I loved his last comment
I NEVER EVER KNEW!!! I had NO IDEA that Pappy Boyington spent 2 years in a Japanese POW Camp! And I watched the Series! Religiously!!
It was in his book
Whose watching the show when their sponsor is Geritol?
What's with the chick asking culinary questions?😂😂 also that dude with the answer, I didn't get his name😂😂😂😂
if you had read Pappy's autobiography, you'd know that while he was in POW camp, he was on kitchen duty. I'm sure that's why the prepared questions touched on jap cuisine.
Met him in 75 or so at Carbondale airshow. Bought his book at the show. Read it. Incredible story. A legend. Met him again in 82? At Osh Kosh. In a wheelchair i believe.
And Pappy Boyington autobiography he stated "there toughest battle I ever fought my own alcoholism."
How would any of those guests NOT KNOW who a famous war hero ace was?
#1, this was 10 years after the war. #2, they are all paid to 'act', #3 - do you not think it obvious the 'real' person always sits under the sponsor's sign?? It's like ALL mass media - scripted and total BS - but entertaining BS back then.
Man I love our old country
Great men like Pappy would be appalled if they saw the US today.
That was pretty cool to see "Pappy" on a video. The only other images of him that I've seen were wartime photographs. He's one of those "bigger than life" personalities from history that have made their mark from their uniqueness. As a kid, I read all the wartime novels I came across :o)
In WW 2, no cure for addiction to alcohol. Alcoholics Anonymous was new and was not learned of yet. Pappy went to Flying Tigers before US military because he was a wild man soldier drinker already. The War gave him a role to live.
When #2 call the naval training facilities as bases, threw me because they are stations. But everything else lined up.
I met him at the Everett airfield while they were doing their annual flyin of ww2 airplanes. I had a dog eared copy of pappys book. He couldn’t believe I’d read it that often. He asked me if I remembered 2 things from the book. I said never turn with a zero. He nodded. Never sell war bonds when you’re drunk. He laughed so hard he spit out his coffee. He signed my book.
That's epic.
