Tatti tatti tatti hai
Hi. I like this container. Can you tell me if the gouache stayed rewettable over time? Did it not crack once dried in cannisters? I noticed these are not really airtight containers. Thanks for the video.
Summary of Daniel Smith's Safety Datasheet: Among the best ways to assess the potential toxicity of various watercolors is to look at the specific manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet. By color, Daniel Smith's datasheet lists hazardous ingredients, ACMI labeling (AP vs. CL), and Prop 65 warnings. In the State of California, ingredients known to cause cancer or reproductive harm require Prop 65 labeling. According to the Safety datasheet, the vast majority of Daniel Smith watercolors do not have any warnings associated with them. The colors of concern primarily include those containing hazardous ingredients like cobalt, chromium, nickel, zinc, titanium, and copper. Specifically, colors with cobalt (e.g., Cobalt Blue, Cobalt Violet), chromium (e.g., Cerulean Blue Chromium), and nickel (e.g., Nickel Azo Yellow). Additionally, colors like Chinese White and Naples Yellow, containing zinc, and Buff Titanium with titanium, also raise concerns, although they may not always carry a Prop 65 warning. The degree of actual risk depends on various factors, including the concentration of these substances in each product ("dose makes the poison") and how these products are used and disposed. Note, that though Daniel Smith's essential set has no toxicity warnings, the version that comes with white ground does contain titantium in the ground itself. Watercolor ground is a product used to prepare surfaces for watercolor painting. It's similar to gesso but specifically formulated for watercolors. When applied to a surface, it creates a porous, absorbent layer that can accept watercolor paint in a way similar to watercolor paper. So if you want "toxic-free" watercolor mediums, avoid the ground. Based on the Safety Data Sheet for Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors, here's a list of colors categorized by their hazardous ingredients. As I mention in my other comment, Daniel Smith does not use cadmium in their paints due in part to its high toxicity that's why cadmium is not listed. Cobalt-containing colors: Cobalt Blue Cobalt Green Cobalt Green Pale Cobalt Teal Blue Cobalt Turquoise Cobalt Violet Cobalt Violet Deep Verditer Blue Cobalt Blue Violet (ACMI: CL, Prop 65: YES for most, some CL YES) Chromium-containing colors: Cerulean Blue Chromium Chromium Green Oxide (ACMI: CL, Prop 65: YES) Nickel-containing colors: Nickel Azo Yellow (ACMI: CL, Prop 65: YES) Zinc-containing colors: Naples Yellow (ACMI: CL, Prop 65: YES) Titanium-containing colors: Buff Titanium Titanium White (ACMI: CL, Prop 65: YES) Copper-containing colors: Rich Green Gold (ACMI: CL, Prop 65: YES) In addition, there are sets and dot cards containing hazardous ingredients: Alvaro Castagnet WC Set (Cobalt) Essentials Mixing Set W/WC Ground (Titanium) Minerals Mixing Set W/WC Ground (Titanium) Jean Haines Master WC Set (Nickel) Pablo Ruben’s Master Artist Set (Cobalt Chromium) Paul Wang’s Colour Play Lab Set (Cobalt Chromium) Stella Canfield’s Master Artist Set I & II (Cobalt) Michael Solovey WC 10 Color Set (Cobalt) Thomas Schaller WC 10 Color Set (Cobalt) Lesya Poplavskaya WC 6 Color Set (Nickel) Angus McEwan WC 10 Color Set (Cobalt) Chen Jian Conda WC 10 Color Set (Cobalt) Nicolas Lopez’s WC 10 Color Set (Zinc) Giovanni Balzarin 5 WC Sticks Set (Cobalt) 24 Color Hand Poured Half Pan Set (Cobalt Chromium) 12 Color Hand Poured Half Pan Set (Cobalt Chromium) 6 Color Earth Hand Poured HP Set (Titanium) 6 Color Sketcher Hand Poured HP Set (Cobalt Chromium) 15 Color Ultimate Mixing HP Set (Cobalt Chromium) 238 Color Watercolor Dot Card (Cobalt Nickel Chromium) (ACMI: AP/CL, Prop 65: YES/NO as specified)
Ranking pigment metals by their potential toxicity: I asked Chatgbt to rank the toxicity of metals used in some pigments in the global paint industry. As a side note, Daniel Smith has substituted cadmium in their paints with safer "hue" alternatives. Chatgpt's response: When considering the forms of metals most commonly used in watercolor paints in the global paint industry, the ranking of their toxicity can vary from the general toxicity of the pure metals. Here's a revised ranking based on the forms typically used in watercolor paints: Cadmium (Cd): Cadmium pigments, used in some red, orange, and yellow paints, remain highly toxic, especially in inhalable forms. They are carcinogenic and can cause damage to the kidneys and bones. Given their use in a more stable pigment form, the risk might be lower than pure cadmium, but they still pose significant health concerns. Cobalt (Co): Cobalt pigments (like cobalt blue) are less toxic in their pigment form than cobalt metal or dust. However, they can still be hazardous, particularly with prolonged exposure. They are less toxic than cadmium pigments but more so than other metal pigments used in watercolors. Chromium (Cr): In watercolors, chromium is generally used in the form of chromium oxide, which is far less toxic than hexavalent chromium compounds. Chromium oxide is used in pigments like viridian or chrome green. It's less toxic than cadmium and cobalt pigments. Nickel (Ni): Nickel is sometimes present in watercolor pigments but typically in very small amounts. Nickel compounds used in pigments are less toxic compared to their industrial forms. They are less hazardous than cadmium, cobalt, and chromium pigments. Copper (Cu): Copper compounds, like those used in phthalocyanine blue and green pigments, are essential in trace amounts but can be toxic in excess. In the form used in watercolor paints, they are considered less toxic compared to cadmium, cobalt, chromium, and nickel pigments. Zinc (Zn): Zinc compounds, like zinc oxide used as a white pigment, are the least toxic in this list. Zinc toxicity from paints is generally low, causing minimal risk compared to the other metals listed. This ranking is specific to the forms of these metals as they are used in watercolor paints. It's important to note that the risks associated with these pigments are generally lower compared to the risks associated with industrial exposure to the pure metals or their more hazardous compounds. Nevertheless, safe handling practices are still recommended, especially for cadmium-containing pigments.
Another great helpful video for beginners! You deserve more subscribers! I hope you post more.
Thanks for the recommendation of Daniel Smith essential and secondary mixing sets. How do you dispose of the pain water waste from these relatively non-toxic paints, down the toilet, in your plants, outside for example?
I personally just dispose of paint water down the drain in the sink. Some artists collect their waste water in a container and let the water evaporate, then eventually throw the solid remainders in the garbage. Unfortunately, that is not practical for me so I am also looking for better solutions. But since I use mostly non-toxic materials, I believe the effects should be minimal when disposing them in the sink. I don't know about watering plants with them since each pigment has a different composition that might affect plants differently. But I definitely won't use them for plants that produce food. Even though the materials are non-toxic, I still try to take care not to have them be in contact with anything to do with food (like plates in the sink, for example). I've also heard of some artists washing their paint palettes in the dishwasher and I don't do that either because of food safety concerns.
An additional plus with Daniel Smith is that their products are not tested on animals. The only animal-derived ingredient they use is the pigment PBk9, found only in the following colors: Sepia, Ivory Black, Joseph Z’s Neutral Grey & Payne’s Gray.
That's very interesting, I did not know that. I guess if somebody wanted to avoid animal-derived ingredients, Mars Black would be a good option?
@@honeysilvasThe animal ingredient is the black pigment PBk9. The common pigment of Ivory Black. Ivory black was originally made by carbonising ivory, but now it is made from animal bones as a by-product of the meat industry. There are a few non-animal alternatives such as Carbon black and Lamp black, made by fuel, and Vine black, made by carbonizing plant material. Mars Black is made by synthetic iron oxides.
Very good review, but would have been more helpful if you shared the specs of both light pads, ie. The lux and kelvin (k) ratings. 0:01
The Cricut Brightpad goes up to 4200 lux.
@@honeysilvas Thank you.
I really appreciate this video!! I recently started getting a rash whenever I paint with my Winsor & newton paints so this video is awesome
Do you know what specifically you are allergic to? Do you think it's the cadmium?
That looks beautiful❤
Thanks!
Wonderful video. Thank you.
You're welcome!
I love this video. Thanks a lot :D
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this review. I've been looking at both the Canson and Fabriano online, and was really struggling to decide. Now I know I can safely buy the Fabriano!
You're welcome! I love the Fabriano 25% as a more inexpensive alternative to 100% cotton paper. It's not the same obviously, but still has some of the feel of cotton.
I really enjoy the Bee inspired paper.
I believe the loop on back is for your finger.
I enjoyed watching your tutorial, thank you. I'm trying to do this in Photoshop, it's nowhere like having water to mimic the natural sky gradient :-(
You're welcome! Water pretty much does most of the work for you.

My usual chromatic gray is with a yellow and violet to create interesting shadows - but I have those two fuse on paper and not as a pre-mix.
I love mixing on paper as well, that's how you can get a lot of interesting effects. Violet is red + blue so when you add yellow, it's all the 3 primary colors mixed together, just a different way of getting there. But yes, a secondary color (which is 2 primaries) + the opposite color which is the 3rd primary should give you a gray or black.
Super tip about French Ultramarine being granulating blue -- so the greys with it are particularly interesting -- and then you gave us alternate of Phthalo blue for non-granulating. Great video, thanks!
You're welcome! It took me a while to figure that out, and once I did, a lot more things made sense. Glad that helped you!
Such an underrated and nicely done video, thank you 🙏 also your voice is really relaxing, subscribed!

Do you still like this palette?
I still really like this palette. I think having a round palette is just a huge game-changer for me, especially if you are using a limited palette, because the relationships between the colors in your mind are just so much more intuitive. I don't have to look at a color wheel or think for a minute which color is opposite which color, or which color is analogous to which color, because the way it's laid out on the palette, it's just obvious. Having said that, personally for me, I don't really like large palettes that take up a lot of table space so I found a similar palette that's much smaller called the Robax palette: www.robax.com/palettes.html I got the 12 sloping well insert/palette (PL20) and the lid for that (PL14L) and it's much smaller so it's more in line with the way I work. If you like large palettes, the Quiller one is fine. I just personally don't have a lot of space on my table because my table is always full of stuff and I often paint with my kid so it gets crazy if the palette is huge as well.
Thank you for this short but helpful video, I,m an absolute beginner, and there,s a lot of information out there, but yours was the one I could follow, I subscribed 👍, greetings from the Netherlands
