Is this in Hi-Fi?
KD was a true master of phrasing!
Beautiful post, variations. Thanks!!
Wow! Where and when was this performance?
Fantastic book. I read it while visiting my Aunt who lives right on the Mississippi.
Masterful
one of the meant for my life. I cannot explain well, way of gear, ..my..my..
Grinning from ear to ear through this entire clip!!!!❤❤
The Velvet Fog was a true match for the Queen of Jazz! Love them both!
I shared this in my community. It made me smile 🙂
Two of the best ever. Thrilling!
I have a number of Ella Fitzgerald CDs and recordings because I love her work and remember seeing her on shows like Ed Sullivan. I completely forgot about Mel Torme!! Thanks for reintroducing him to me. I need to start scouring RUclips and Apple Music for his tunes.
GAWD, she could scat
Wowza! Killin it.
WOW. So much talent in one spot. So amazing to hear. Her voice so incredible. So clear and perfect. There will never be another Ella Fitzgerald. Back in my generation, some people used to make fun of Mel Torme. They never gave him the credit he deserved. He was a mellow-voiced singer and also a songwriter. If those people poking fun of him ever heard this, they would take back every mean thing they ever said about him. Nothing like hearing a little jazz and scat to make your day brighter.
Such a treasure to witness two great artists having so much fun together, with precision and freedom in their sandbox.
What a great version of great scat singers! Two of my favorites!
Wow
There's no one who could stay like these 2...especially Ella
One of my most gratifying evenings was sneaking in to the Ella Fitzgerald concert for the then new Smith College President. Fortunately, the window I climbed in was where the Will Mastin trio was hanging out and they thought this white college kid was cool. She had a fuschia scarf that she used as a prop. No one wanted her singing to end. Smooth as silk.
That's Mel Tormè with Miss Ella😊 They are taking that house down!! ❤
Love good scat and they were the best!
Saludos afectuosos y gracias nuevamente.

6 years and no comments on this incredibly deep and powerful performance? at the height of the controversy over this beloved figure speaking out in anger at the injustice of the Little Rock Nine? Interjecting a "Star Spangled Banner" quote into this spiritual? shame, shame.... Would love to know more about the rest of this show around which this sanctified moment appeared...
Damn! It like that man possesses three, entirety separate brains! One handles the left hand, one handles the right hand and the third brain assigns them the ideas to carry out. No way to ever beat that!
.. Ну тётка даёт! Уважуха!
Great stuff. Thank you for the Longhair documentary.
Cuando la música se acaba siento la gravedad del mundo...
Thanks for sharing this great video!! Professor Longhair is a legend! His music is a gift to humanity!
That’s the truth right there, Mercy!
This is so interesting. This is the kind of stuff I find fascinating. Imagine no electricity, no way to get to the people, only through what was played in brothels, that's where it was heard and embellished
Hi Sir - Ozou`ne Sundalyah here. Thanks for sharing this Video with us. I have been trying to find Sir Gilberto who I met many years ago. He gave me his a Score of his Composition La Zorra and said that I should feel free to perform it with my Group. I am the Musical Director for JaMM Big Band and we hope to perform his La Zorra Composition on April 30, 2024, International Jazz Day. I would so love to touch base with him as he was so complimentary regarding my playing as I also so respected and so enjoyed his playing whenever we jammed. Blessings and thanks again.

Seiji Ozawa, distinguished and esteemed for his profound influence in the realm of classical music, solidified his status as an eminent conductor in the late twentieth century. His presence, characterized by a compelling gravitas, captivated orchestral performers. Under his baton, orchestras were seemingly entranced, coalescing around his artistic vision, thereby weaving performances of meticulous craftsmanship and nuanced interpretation. He has long been associated with orchestral works by American composers. His interpretations of pieces by composers such as Gershwin and Copland have left an indelible mark on the classical music world. This was indeed his sole specialty, a testament to his artistry and unwavering commitment to musical excellence. Yet, through his extensive discography, Seiji Ozawa’s legacy will endure beyond the podium, inspiring and resonating with future generations.
Beautiful....
Blah, blah, blah 😂😂😂
Wow, this is some deep stuff and I'm loving it.
I've seen so many comments about people saying Oscar is the greatest pianist ever. Oscar always humbly mentioned Art Tatum with reverence. Those stories about Shostakovich, Horowitz paying their respects to Art!
I’ll have to return the watch this. I’m reading the book now. It’s amazing and I’ve learned so much about music and of course, Sonny and his life. I too read tons of musician bios and this ranks high among them.
Thank you, Ken, for all the invaluable work you do as a first rate curator of music and musicology. Your daily emails and digests are an important part of each morning for me.
I've known David my whole life. Growing up at Tompkins Corners in Putnam Valley NY, my parents knew David long before I was born. His farm was about 1/4 mile down the road from our 4 generations of family. So grateful to get to attend his birthday celebration each year at The Falcon and see him perform at what used to be the church I grew up going to at Tompkins Corners.
Truth spoken here!!
So there’s Bernstein’s 1959 performance with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony playing the original jazz band version and Roberts/Ozawa collaborating on this jazz improvisational version. Listen to them consecutively, marvel and sing Happy Birthday.
Great info
