    Oh brother, toss that thrust bearing into junk, don`t waste evaporust on it... A bearing that has had any amount of rust in it is dead... No amount of evaporust and grease will fix a ruined bearing... Evaporust the gears and other stuff, that is worth the time, and is not as ridiculously critical as bearing surfaces... Speaking of bearing surfaces, those spindle bronze bearings look nice! All the best and kind regards! Steuss P.s. Looking forward to the painting series!

    • @secondarymachine7521
      @secondarymachine7521 7 месяцев назад

      The problem with just tossing that bearing is that you literally can't buy that bearing anymore. I will at least attempt to bring it back. So far the rust that is on the machine appears to be pretty light and I think the bearing is primarily filled with bad grease...fingers crossed..

    • @camillosteuss
      @camillosteuss 7 месяцев назад

      @@secondarymachine7521 Huh? Can`t you find a replacement part? I know that machines can come with morbidly stupid bearings and bearing dimensions which are not offered lest ordered as a custom bearing, but hell, there should be something that can replace it? Even if it is a needle thrust bearing... Yeah, i saw the thing, it could be mostly oxidized grease, but i tend to air on the pragmatic surgeon`s methods when dealing with bearings if I even sense a hint of crunch or any nonsense about it that isn`t as smooth as butter... Hopefully it`s just junk grease, if not, well, there is a part that would be worth making on a cnc grinder or even a competent lathe with the ability to produce supreme bearing finishes... I mean, thrust bearings are as simple as it gets, just a tad more complex than a simple bronze bush or bronze thrust washer... The balls are industrial lego and can be had in any material needed, and the races are literally precision grooved washers... The cages, well, they are a bitch, but those could be easily made differently and allow the bearing to function just as good... A decent cnc lathe with the ability to make such races could easily make the cages by just p.c.d. drill-reaming a chunk of bronze or brass to adequately space out the bearing balls... Shit, a good manual set of machines could do it just as well on a 1off basis... Kind regards and best wishes(especially regarding the bearing situation)!

    • @secondarymachine7521
      @secondarymachine7521 7 месяцев назад

      No, you can't get this baring anymore. I do think someone on ebay is selling a thrust bearing that will make it go, but I don't want that on my lathe if I can avoid it. This bearing was made for Southbend and long since unavailable unless you buy used.. @@camillosteuss

    • @camillosteuss
      @camillosteuss 7 месяцев назад

      @@secondarymachine7521 Hell, if you don`t mind, write down the specific dimensions and ball size for me... I am not promising anything anytime soon, but once i get a new shop built, contend with all of my machines that need an overhaul or a service, and finish dealing with all the shit that i severely overlooked - I will likely add that bearing to a list of parts that i will be making and offering... Yeah, i get not wanting to just compromise willy nilly with random - possibly adequate bearings, especially if no true-to-type replacement is to be found... Regarding the dimensions, it`s od, id, ball size, race thickness(i assume both are the same), assembled bearing thickness(groove calc. through previous sizes), ball amount and that`s it really, as i will likely be making the cages out of bronze(if nothing, it will look better in tandem with bronze spindle bearings)... Now, preferably, all dimensions would be in sub-micron range, but for what this bearing is, a micron readout will do quite well... I will draw a tech print and insert it into my folder until the time i can get down to biz... You needn`t rush, but if/when you find some time to do so, i would appreciate it, and i think that one day, a lot of people will too... All the best!

    An early Bridgeport round ram with the 36" table is a great machine for home shop guys. You can find them with the J head, which takes R8. The original M head is a MT2 spindle, shorter quill travel, no power down feed. Anytime I see one of those Clausing mills on the west coast, the seller is asking crazy money. I have a full size Bridgeport, which is a big step up from my last mill (Burke Millrite), but if I ever need to sell it and downsize, I'd probably get the HF knee mill, which is the same machine as that Enco

Understanding the outer radius might be difficult if existing damage or heat process repair cause distortion. I have resorted to ebay for some small parts and continue to study best upgrade as to my SB 9C. It's SN 62016. I traded a day and a half of fitter work for the lathe, stored outside and where I have cleaned and repaired to basic functions. I find I so like it's useful component as to my workshop.
