Why We Read Fairy Tales - A Classical Charlotte Mason Approach
The Bible says "no witchcraft" right? Why then would a conservative christian family choose to read fairy tales that include magic and witches? Today, I chat about the premise behind why we believe fairy tales don't violate scripture and see them as a valuable tool for teaching goodness and virtue as well as engaging imagination and building faith.

Why we didn't choose Ambleside Online
Thank you for all this info! Im new to homeschooling, like so new that I'm trying to find what curriculum!!!! This is great info!
I appreciate your video! I have been teaching traditional homeschooling for 3 years now and I gradually want to make a swift to Charlotte Mason on specific subjects like history. I discovered BOC but have no clue how to create one since I am on a very tight budget. Is it possible if you can make an in depth video on how to exactly label pages etc. I would greatly appreciate it! TYIA! 😊 GOD BLESS!
CMEC mom here, second year with them, and i definitely recommended them even if you're not a purist like me. Thank you for your time.
How does the world history in this work? I see it in the plans, but can’t find any you tube videos on that part. Everyone only talks about the American history part of it. I am so confused by the world history part lol
What are your thoughts on SCM Arithmetic vs. Beauty & Truth now that you've used B&T for a while now? We've used Math With Confidence for K-2nd are are about a quarter of the way through 3rd, but it's never been a great fit and feel we really need to make a change. I'm researching Math U See, SCM Arithmetic, and B&T Math. I would love to hear any advice you may have!
This is going to be a random question, lol. But, I love the bookshelves you have in the background. Do you mind telling me where you purchased them>
This video was great and informative. I am interested in Alveary, and your videos so far have been very helpful. Also, I wanted to recommend Jady A's Elemental Phonics program. There are three levels. It's so simple for busy moms. At first, I thought this was too easy for me to teach. Will it really work? And yes! My son is very active, so the length of the lessons really helped.
Can I ask--how have you liked the community read-alouds referenced? (Understandably, I can't access book lists for those, but I am curious if you've found that a lot of the titles have been repeats from AGF.)
I was so interested in your video about how you switched from AGF to The Alveary--it surprised me, but the more I watched your video, the more I agreed with what brought you to make the change. I also need/love refreshment in our homeschool, and while I love AGF, it's been hard going back around to Cycle 1 again with most of the material being repeat for me as mom. :) Thanks for making this updated video on how it's going!
Hello! Do you have the link to your alphabet card swirl stand??
My daughter is 11 and my only homeschooler. Would Peaceful Press be a good fit for 1 child?
We have the same type of schedule and I’m super interested in those agendas you made for your kids. I don’t see the link to that video. I honestly never thought of scheduling our weeks as days 1-4 instead of Mon-Fri. We also do a 4 day week but complete in 3 days. I’ll definitely be rethinking my planner going forward. We use AGF so it’s pretty easy to manipulate the schedule and combine kids. Thanks for the ideas!
Do you don’t have to have a GED or high school diploma to home school in ga ?
This is one area my husband and I don't fully agree. We walk a balance, between the fairy tale world. For example some of the Blue Fairy Book is ok with him and Grimm's etc aka classic fables and fairy tales, but Narnia is a hard no for him. I respect my husband so, even though I see so much goodness in Narnia, LOTR, and many other fairy tales, I don't read those one's with my children.
I concur that we should always seek peace in our homes and honor what our husband is comfortable with. 💕
If fairy tales were wrong why did Jesus teach with parables?
That’s a great way to discuss this topic with others.
This was so fun to watch, we use the Alveary also, I have two Form 1 students and some littles. It's our 3rd year using it. I appreciate you sharing how you are using the Alveary for your family. It's not a super common CM curriculum yet so every time I see content about it I get really excited. Your morning combined subject list is actually very similar to ours. I like the idea of having the list visible for them to bring their own books to the table. I decided to get Syllabird this year also and I love paper too but Syllabird is saving me so much time it is well worth the investment. We have a small home for the size of our family so I am trying to be mindful of storage and the flow of supplies and books from the table and back to the living room where they are stored. I look forward to more videos from you :] subscribed
Hello and welcome! I hope that whatever I share continues to be encouraging and helpful! It’s always awesome to connect with other families using the same curriculum.
Thanks for the great video again. Still trying to decide between AGF and Alveary, so your videos have been helpful. Also, your headscarf! Where did you get it?
I’m so glad they are helpful! Feel free to ask any questions. Happy to answer if I’m able. My head scarf is my favorite gift my hubby has ever given me. It’s from the Holocaust Museum in DC. He snagged it at the gift shop when I wasn’t looking.
Thank you so much for this! We’re a missionary family, struggling to balance ministry and homeschool and loneliness! This helped me immensely think about what curriculum might be the best for my kids!
Wow! I hope you’ll find what will serve your family best.
If you have a Tuesday class that you want to reschedule for the following Monday, you would click on the class in the calendar, click the three dots at the stop right, hit reschedule, and unclick “Keep in course structure”. This will make the class free form and you can schedule it on what ever day you want. I also agree that it would be great to have a Day 1-4 type checklist that you can move around instead of a dated calendar. Wonder if it’s something that can be tweaked.
I have used that feature, but it actually locks you into specific days of the week based on what is in the course. Even if you click the little box to allow it to work the way you want - it doesn't actually work that way. They have assigned days and it's a big headache to go to every course and adjust those individually. Even if you did that, it might need to happen again and again. I have tried and tried and tried, but the reschedule feature isn't practical for the way we do our lessons.
Thanks for sharing! Do you find it hard to do the work in a 4 day week vs 5 day? We are using AGF (Form 1), and I find it very easy to do a 4 day week or even 3 if we have too. Just wondering if that is the case for Alveary.
For my form 1 and first year form 2 student, no. I have a different scenario with my eldest. He’s at the end of form 2 and struggles with executive function skills. So his 3-4 day schedule takes a long time. 🤦🏻♀️
I agree it can be hard to find the books, but on the Facebook page many moms have gathered all the free public domain books into a “reader” that can be printed off and put into a binder. I have not been able to find almost any of the AO books at my library, but being able to have options on listening online or reading for free has been such a blessing. I do not like their history being broken down like it is, but we chose to give it a fair shot and have fallen in love with all the AO books. I’m sure that there is better books out there for history than what AO offers, but it’s hard to beat free. I do have a question for you, what specific books did you see that you didn’t care for that made you choose another curriculum? Was there something you thought of as not so good?
I’m glad you’ve found ways for AO to work for you family. If a “free” curriculum was essential to us, I’d likely quit my side gigs and put in the grunt work to pull my own CM plans together. I just don’t have the time due to working a couple part time jobs (mainly for myself). As to book choices with AO, I’m not sure I’ve ever said any of them were bad. I just feel like they use multiple books at younger ages than I find developmentally appropriate. Especially since there are many other selections that children ages 6-9 could be enjoying that cover history and the other topics in a beautiful and more engaging manner for early childhood. Most of the AO books, we wind up reading. We just choose to do them when our kids are more ready for older English, or lengthy passages without any images at all. It’s about delight in the early years for us. I want my kids to love and enjoy the works. I also want it to whet their appetite for more. I find that AO uses books like Our Island Story, Robin Hood, etc. at ages when my kids wouldn’t have engaged with the text the way they can at 9 plus years old. 💕
Would you consider doing a video of other books you have enjoyed for history? I agree some of the AO books are hard and some of the history books are randomly placed but I think they did that so a child can get a basic idea of important American figures while still doing ancient history, but I’m no expert so I don’t know for sure. I felt it a bit out of place but AO is the only curriculum we can afford since it’s free, so I’m giving it a fair shot. So far we love the books and what we have read. I agree some of the harder books like Robin Hood or the original Pilgrims Progress probably would be enjoyed more at a later time.
All About Reading is a great one if you want an Orton-Gillingham approach to reading. 😊 But I am sure you already know that. ❤ Sounds like things are going pretty well!
Yes! I am consider that or the Logic of English. Thanks for the suggestion. I for sure need help from other moms and guidance about what has worked well with students that need some extra support.
@@kindletogethernessAnother vote for All About Reading! It’s been so wonderful for my child who needed that detailed, systematic phonics instruction.
If you didn’t purchase sylabird would you feel as if you could cater to your own schedule better? I am debating if I need the scheduling app or not. We also prefer a 4 day school week.
I personally need paper plans and I feel like Syllabird helps facilitate that really well. If the paper plans aren't a thing for you, and you want to use what is in The Alveary membership and just write it into your own planner weekly, it could work very well that way.
@@kindletogethernessthank you for your reply! If you purchase sylabird are you printing off directly from that? I also like paper plans and not online. Does purchasing sylabird just take away the need to copy down the plans yourself?
@@sidneyhosteen6347 Yeah. Syllabird makes it super easy to schedule everything and have all subjects listed like it is in a planner already. Then you can print it. Otherwise, you can skip syllabird and buy the plans but you would need to print them and flip through each subject daily to find where you are, or you would want to write it into a planner so you have a daily plan. Hope this makes sense.
I’m curious if you could just go in after your four day week (on syllabird) and every week put a vacation on the Friday or whatever is the next day from what you end up landing on from week to week. Would it still not shift it right? We’re still barely starting out and I’m pregnant and super sick and all our plans I intended to use with Alveary will most likely NOT be happening. 😅 We will be keeping some things but we are having to majorly simplify over here to get anything done over here. 🥴I realized that any time I physically walked past our plans (I so meticulously planned out) I would get the sickest feeling. 😢 Gods plans are better though! Thanks for sharing your experience so far!❤
How are you liking the book selection with the Alveary? Also, I’m not new to CM but do have a new to homeschooling and 7th grader/former 3. I’m thinking about using a lot of the form 2 and some form 3 subjects for him for his first year with this. Is that easy to do with the Alveary and syllabird?
I also pair up children. I have 2 10th graders. High school curriculum is expensive! I buy one science, one history, one set of literature etc. I also combine my 6th and 7th graders in history and science.
Very smart! Glad to know it is still working with high school students.
Glad to see you are finding it so wonderful for your family! I really need to step up with handicrafts and art, but oy it's tricky with so many little hands. We share books too. Last year I bought a couple of individual books for my kids because they were sharing soo many, but in general they share and then keep their own colored bookmarks in each shared book. We do buy Shakespeare for everyone because we read through with taking parts though. This is especially helpful because my 6th grader shares some books with my 7th grader and some with my 4th.
Colored bookmarks is a great idea, Heather!
I would love to hear more about those notebooks!

Love this idea! Where can I find the series!?
I haven't been able to post more. I am sorry. I hope to at some point soon.
This was very helpful information i just pulled all 3 of my kids out of school and ive been completely lost and terrified until I watched this.

Hi! Thank you for your thorough videos! Was wondering if there is a basic CM how-to/her philosy and methods book i could pick up as I look into her approach for my own young ones?
Hi Jessica! You might try Home Education by Charlotte Mason (it’s geared towards those with children 6 and under, mostly). Otherwise, many folks really like For The Children’s Sake.
I am torn on what to do as far as science for my 2 boys they are 13 & 10 and love science and love doing together and we haven’t done a ton of science.: we will be doing a lot together and want to with science as well and was thinking of starting in 4 and working up etc because they say it’s progressive.. what do you think
We actually began in Grade 4 science this year. My boys are 11 and 9 and doing it together.
@@kindletogetherness this is very encouraging.. I sent an Instagram message but not sure it went through . I thought 4 was a good starting point . As it is progressing
I’m unsure if I saw your IG dm or not. Sometimes they are filtered in a weird way. Did I respond?
This channel is so underrated! Thank you Sarah Ruth for all your efforts. You've helped me tremendously in my homeschool journey. God bless you!! 🙏
Wow! Your words are so kind and encouraging. All glory to God!
Thank you for making this and I do have some questions..what is the best way to ask? I would love to see how you combine your kiddos. I have 2 boys 13 & 10 and girl 7 1/2 I looked at alveary last year then went with biblioplan and we didn't finish it.. To much to type here.. But I am back to looking at alveary for my youngest 3 to refresh our schoolkng..my hoghschoolers are doing online school..
Hi Daphne! 👋🏽 Feel free to ask here. I’ll do my best to create a video about combining students soon.
Yes my main issue with amblesideonline is I have 5 kiddos and I just can’t afford to purchase all the books . So I am creating some unit studies printing some free ones and let’s see how that goes
You definitely have to get creative with lots of kiddos!
Lovely talk. Thank you for sharing your heart. I love the “put down the rope” idea. It is so true.
So glad it was helpful! Thanks for leaving a comment.
Hi there! I am new to homeschooling and am planning to teach my 1st grader this year. I am searching for the right curriculums for us and am really leaning towards Exploring Nature With Children and the Playful Pioneers. In your experience, would you be able to use the two together? We will also add math (leaning towards Math-U-See) not sure if we would need anything else specific, like phonics.
Hello Rebecca! Yes, you could do ENWC and Playful Pioneers, I did. Jen does include some nature study in her curriculums, but ENWC is so simple to implement and wonderful for 1st grade.
Please do a video on how you’re combining! I signed up for the alveary thinking that it would be simplified but I am so overwhelmed!
Oh no! I am sorry it feels overwhelming. If you want super straightforward and open and go, I highly recommend A Gentle Feast. It is a CM curriculum too and there is a lot less to wade through. That said, I am loving The Alveary. I will try and make a video at some point. I have been swamped lately.
This was great info. my son will be in the 3rd grade (2025-2026 school yr). And I was looking for more info. about standardized testing. So, thank you...thank you...thank you.🙌🏾 I also appreciated the information as a "Home Educator" I can creat and issue my son's high school diploma when that day comes🎉🥹. Bless U✌🏾
Thanks for taking time to tell me it was helpful! I hope you and your son have a wonderful year together this year.
I’m looking for something for 1 child. My son is very hyper and my husband and I struggle to get him to sit still and do work. Is there anything out there? I love the idea of CM but I’m just not sure.
I have friends that have one kiddo and follow a CM philosophy. IMO, A Gentle Feast is a nice fit. Be sure he has access to many breaks, lots of heavy work, and plenty of time outdoors.
I loved watching this, SarahRuth! I used Alveary two or so years ago and I see it getting better and better! This year I am trying out just ordering their suggested books and going at our own pace, Sally Clarkson style. Eeek, we will see how it goes! My personality just gets anxious with lesson plans, crazy enough. I am excited to see your excitement!!
Awww! I’m so glad you’re finding your freedom and running with it!
I would love to hear how buying the books and doing them at your own pace has worked for you.
@@tharareinitz2113Well, I pivoted again after I got the books and did not think it would be ideal for my kids. I just didn’t feel excited personally and that would affect us. So I just pieced together my own simple plan and we go at our own pace and we are loving it!
I found this interesting. Thanks for sharing! I have been with the Alveary for 7 full years now and am seriously considering a change next year. You are right, their in depth details are fabulous (though at times overwhelming - like drinking from a fire hydrant setting everything up, but runs smooth once you get organized). The past two years the Alveary has been focusing a lot on Native American Indians - so much so, that it seems odd and imbalanced. I can appreciate an expanding view from just European descendants, but the majority of us ARE of European decent so it does make sense to focus on our country and it's heritage. The story a lot of their history paints is of victim hood, and not on what was overcome. African American history is often presented in that light as well. Also, their literature options are becoming more modern and my middle school and teens rarely are exposed to any classics. The middle school years seem soft. I really don't like the direction history and literature are heading. I DO love where they are going with Spanish and science. Their botany course this year is amazing and we are very much looking forward to using it. I know there isn't a perfect curriculum - this is just to give perspective.
Thanks so much for adding your thoughts. My eldest is grade 6 and after looking at his books and pre-reading, I’ve not found them “soft”. However, this is only my very first exposure to their book lists at this higher grade level. We shall see!
Loved listening to this! 😍🥰♥️ You popped up on my recommended videos. I’m refreshing my CM home school this year, too, so it’s interesting to hear what others are doing.
Thanks for sharing! What did you land on?
@@kindletogetherness I cobble together my own! From all the great booklists etc. I’ve been CM homeschooling for awhile and really like doing that. I know ‘open and go’ are very helpful. 🥰blessings over your learning year!
Thank you for this review with thoughtful feedback! I’d love to see a video for the under 6 crowd. I have a 3 and (almost) 5 year old and I’m trying to find the best option for our family 😊
I was thinking of that punch tool that you use to poke holes in signatures before you bind them. Also maybe a few binder clips. 🥰
Interesting.
@@kindletogetherness Oh goodness. I commented on the wrong video! 🤣
A question: how as a public school educator come to be familiar with Charlotte Mason? 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I’m not sure of the context for this question, but I learned about her in college. We had to do a research thesis paper on a philosophy of education we liked and in researching the various philosophies, I found Miss Mason and read her volumes.
@@kindletogetherness how wonderful!
Oh I love A Gentle Feast! And I'm so curious about Alveary!
I love AGF too! And I’m excited to be trying The Alveary.
Hey!!! 🎉❤🎉 We love The Alveary as well! I'll be looking for you in the Hive ❤
Awesome! I’m still getting the hang of everything.
Where did you find the hardback Strayer Upton book?
I bought them from a Facebook BST
The fact that is each kid is separated would be big challenge for me with 4 kids. Doing family style learning & then adding different reading levels for things like science, geography & history is kinda a must. So I'd love to see how you do it with multiple kids.
That’s sort of how this is. In a way.
