In loving memory of Luce - this was one of her favourites and with her mother's blessing, I translated the song into ASL for her Celebration of Life event. f Not Now If not now then when If now today then Why make your promises A love declared for days to come Is as good as none You can wait 'til morning comes You can wait for the new day You can wait and lose this heart You can wait and soon b...
Ithaka in ASL

In loving memory of Luce - this was one of her favourites and with her mother's blessing, I translated the poem into ASL for her Celebration of Life event. As you set out for Ithaka hope the voyage is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery. Laistrygonians and Cyclops, angry Poseidon-don’t be afraid of them: you’ll never find things like that on your way as long as you keep your though...
Thank you CCSD!

Thank you CCSD for awarding me the Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf's Deaf Person of the Year in 2017. It takes a lot of hard work, sacrifices and passion to get to where I am today. So, it's a huge honour to be recognised, especially in my home country. Whatever my heart says, I conceive and believe in it then I achieve. Anything is possible!

Elävä Taulu (a short trailer in Finnish Sign Language)
Просмотров 3408 лет назад
One of the most signification works of Finnish literature is the Kalevala. In the 19th century, Elias Lönnrot complied Karelian poetry into epic Finnish folklore. Elävä Taulu (The Living Frame) tells a story of a bout between two men, Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen, in a bid to win the hand of the Maiden of the North. All characters were performed by Dawn Jani Birley and the show was directed by Mar...

Why I sign? I am glad you asked... For me, I did not have a choice because it came natural to me just like fish take to water. I was born to third generation Deaf family so I always had access to communication. My mighty pillars of ASL and Deaf identity led to where I am today, a successful actor, adventurer and philanthropist...

If we want to see action, we need to lead by example. It is a fact that audism is everywhere and we can do something about it starting with ourselves ;) “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” ~Mahatma Gandhi

put a thumbs up on this comment if your watching in 2020
Very beautiful artistic interpretation of the national anthem for the deaf ... understandable even with articulation, so that the content of the text is easier to get "into the veins" of deaf and hearing people as easily as possible ❤❤❤
🎉🎂🎈
Thank you so much for posting. I may have memorized the anthem in its original French but I'm long overdue in learning it in ASL.
Beautiful country , beautiful sign language, awesome,
This is Beautiful

Dawn, I know the video is few years old and I do find your story interesting. I wanted to thank your for your story and your characters that so inspiring to me. I,one day, might comes to Regina, Saskatchewan, because it is calling for me to go on vacation there. Cheers, Damian from U.S.
DfDrPepper DfDrPepper nice to hear from you... Saskatchewan is a beautiful province to visit 😍👍🏼
Thank you so much. I can sing the anthem in English and its original French and thanks to you for Canada's 150th birthday I can sign the anthem as well. :)
I'm hearing and I like to learn to communicate in ASL, but without a sound it is hard to learn from ASL videos. So Thank you for the the sound track!
Thanks for your feedback :) We try to supplement our videos with sounds for our hearing peers, however, it would be great to add subtitles for every video posted so that we can understand our hearing peers as well ;) Best of luck with your ASL *thumbs up*
Thank you for your reply.
Wow, It is very interesting to know how it works.. I will do that.. Sometimes I did like you and not use old with ears.. I still need to keep practice like that.. Great point! Thanks for sharing!
it gets easier with persistence, patience and practice 😉👍🏼

I rather wants to use sign-language CSL or ASL whatever.... I satisfied it !! anyway. I will watch your more videos (now 4th so far out of your dozen vids yet !! lot of them !! )

Hello Kelly! I'm Canadian with dual citizenship with Finland 😉 I was born and raised in Saskatchewan... hands waving 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Hi Dawn, what is your nation born ? in Finland right ? your sign said "Finland" - refurn home from Gallaudet
I'm Canadian with dual citizenship with Finland. I was born and raised in Saskatchewan but have been living in Northern Europe for 16 years...
how came ? you pays two countries tax yearly ?? ha ha kidding.... You are not Finnish nation vowed yet or never ha - Stay as you are Canadian native ! if you changed your mind then come back home here man !... you don t have to listened to me ha... but why you song O'canada national anthem and you didn't song others... then come my home country man !!! ha kidding.. I bet you love there (where the snow survival is..) and curious piece of countries in Europe alone (more unique where you always running around) --- Look in Northern Europe is pretty AS my home British Columbia is more prettier better than rest in across Canada you missed it didn't you ?? once you gone to Finland and the same our Air too ?!?!!! ha ha... you lose deaf lady counted in Canada either !! ha ha anyway.... when u lived in Sask I believed you had a long dreaming of this then came true i guess... have a great happy life Dawn Thanks ;)
I seize opportunities as they come and go... Life is about learning and everyone has their own journey to embark upon so I tackle mine as a Canadian and Finnish, however, I'm a global citizen so it doesn't matter where you are as long as you live life the way you want to :)

Wow! Dawn, the ripple-waves reach Germany ;) I remember practising the "pledge" a long time ago. In this time I just pointed at my eye when came in contact with hearing. With similar positive results as you told. So I´ll try it again - thank you for your inspiration :-) And yeah, more things could be changed - in the world and in our mind if we keep on walking with open eyes through the world. I think one of further examples of unnoticed audism is the German (and ASL?) sign of "deaf". Why do we still use the sign for "deaf and dumb"? So do I but I want to change that too ;-)) Anyway, I´m looking forward for further challenges in 2016 :)) Best greetings from Munich!
Ooh wow! Thanks for letting me know 👍🏼 Deaf people have been around for centuries and we will continue to be. I try my best in my lifetime to aspire for positive change and yes it is hard work but it's possible! People like you inspire me! 😊 May we just continue ...

Very Interesting to know about Deaf History in Sasketchewan.. Thank for Share..
+Percy Anthony No problem :) I hope to do some more in the future
Hi Dawn.... That is really interesting. I understand that you said woman with ear is for woman who mostly wears earrings. I use the other way round in school with international learners. I asked them what they signed and make sure it is clear for them till they understand asl.... Great sharing.... Christine
+74Lifegoeson Both signs are correct - I think it depends on geography and cultural sensitivity...
A Greeting from me from Venezuela, I see that video is very interesting from a research in sing language : Woman, Fem, Lady, Mama ..etc . thanks cheerleader DAWN JANI BIRLEY (SMILE) God bless and good luck in your future plans...
+Milagro Requena Thank you :) I think this will always be an ongoing question because languages change over time so do sign languages :)
I don't like the earring sign for women because men can have their ears pierced too, it reinforces gender roles. Men don't have breast and breasts are nothing to be ashamed of, so the sign should not shame you.
+MarkDeafMcGuire ... sign languages like any other languages are always evolving... I actually use both signs for 'woman' depending on where I am and for whom I am signing for because both are in use. For me, there is no right or wrong and people have their own opinions on everything...
I couldn't figure out how to see it.....doesn't seem to be working
me to
Love this version of O Canada. Best one I have seen on RUclips. I work for an inclusive program in a hearing school and was wondering if we could please get your permission to add the O Canada text so that we could share it with our Hearing, Hard of Hearing and Deaf students.
+Rob Livingston Hi! Thank you :) Of course you have my permission. Would you like to have an original copy? To where can I email?
wurdeschön
You are beautiful. I wish I could learn signing by reading English captions under your videos...
Awesome. I am a beginner ASL student and I want to teach my kindergarten class to sign O'Canada in ASL. This version of O'Canada is my favourite out of all that I could find on RUclips. I like the way signing is gracefully flowing in a dance like motion with a beautiful facial expressions in this interpretation. I just wish I could have signs matched with words to break them down for speaking children before signing the whole song. I had hard time understanding when signs did not much the lyrics and I could not read lips such as between parts, "...Native's land" and "True North". Thanks for posting.
+mmikitio smile :) Thank you :) I plan to make a high quality video with sound so that everything (the lyrics visually and audibly) is in sync...
Nice adaptation. Suggestions: use classification to replace the sign "all" and try to change the sign for "north". Then it'll be mostly pure ASL/CSL.
+vibes24 I am using International Sign

+vibes24 Hi! I used International Sign (not ASL or CSL) for this one :)
beautiful but no sounds?
+pmg1180 It is because Deaf people do not need sound, however, I plan to make a high quality video with sound so that everything (the lyrics visually and audibly) is in sync...
