Welcome to the official RUclips channel of the Finnish Retro Game Comparison Blog (FRGCB), established in 2019. Here, you will find video accompaniments to FRGCB's game comparisons and Finnish retro game reviews, whenever unavailable elsewhere, as well as mostly unemulated game video compilations under the title My Nostalgia Trip Games, with some other odd things scattered between all that. All the videos on this channel are relatively low-budget, with no production team behind any of it, but I hope you enjoy the channel's offerings nonetheless.
FRGCB's Let's Play - Actman (MSX)
FRGCB presents a Let's Play sort of a cheap video production thing of:
ACTMAN (ASCII Entertainment, 1984) for the MSX computers.
The footage was played on a Canon V-20 64k MSX computer, recorded using a Sony RDR-HX710 DVD-recorder, re-captured with OBS Studio and compiled using VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Platinum Steam Edition (because it cannot utilise pure DVD format (VOB) videos properly). The camera pointing at me is a Zoom Q2HD.
I have transcribed my commentary straight from the unmixed Zoom Q2HD recording, so turning on the custom English subtitles is highly recommended for enhanced clarity.

FRGCB's Let's Play - Snake Rattle 'n Roll (NES)
This is one of the few rare occasions where the Spectrum version is among the best, if not *the* best of the bunch (including arcade originals when it applies).
Thanks for this video and this review, I wanted to give this game a try and wasn't sure which version I should check out. I think I'll go with Intellivision and Atari 2600 (with a PlayStation gamepad). Those are the only ones that I think got the pacing right. I liked the addition of the archer in the intellivision, so I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the video and web article. I remember having this game on Spectrum. I never completed it and was frustrated that I couldn’t find the blowpipe (there was an in-game picture on the box that I recall showed Jack using it). 37 years later and the mystery is solved…
Micro Machines - I have never played a single MM game that I liked. I really don't like top view racing games, and this one was more annoying than most. Even with the later 3D entries on various systems, I never liked them. With those, the camera never fully stays behind the cars and for some reason, you do one lap, then come to a stop. Alien Breed - I thought I'd love this game, but I didn't. With games like this, i like to explore every part of the level, and pick up all the items. Except with this game, the endlessly spawning aliens make that difficult to do. By the time I've explored the entire level and memorized it to the point that I can be sure I've been everywhere, I have no more ammo left. It kind of goes against my gaming instincts to play an action game like this and NOT kill everything that moves. Rick Dangerous - I liked this and played it enough to memorize the first level. However, the fact that you have to restart and play through it AGAIN every time you die on the second level discouraged me from learning that level. "Oh, I fell for a trap and that was my last life. Now I need to spend 10+ minutes going though level 1 again." North and South - I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the side-view parts unplayable. Rampart - I liked this, but I wasn't any good at it. I could never seem to capture more cannons during the rebuilding phase.
Amiga intro music is plain awesome, used to load the game just for it
I'd say it's the best part of the Amiga version, and well worth loading it up just because of the music. =)

Such a great game! I still remember being so excited walking into Toys R Us to buy it as a kid.

High Speed was released somewhere in 1992 in Europe since it was featured (and added to the list of released games) in issue 4 of 1992 from Club Nintendo magazine.
Well, thanks for the correction - it's too bad there's all sorts of wrong information on the internet, there's always the chance of getting some of these details wrong if/when you're not careful.
The semi-fresh C64 port of Frostbite is also sweet
I agree, excellent port.
I think I prefer the Beeb/Elk versions of Frak despite the chunkier 2pixel scrolling and sprite flicker. The C64 version is a bit too 'zoomed in' for me.
I remember one reviewer of Citadel describing it as 'what JSW should have been'!!
Yeah, that's one way to look at it, and I kind of agree with that. Then again, I suppose Citadel wouldn't probably have been the game it is without JSW, eh?
One of my favourite games on the ZX Spectrum. It was quite easy to complete. The Intellivision version looks amazing
The C64 version is so much more fast and fun, though this version almost plays like a completely different game. Watch out when recording C64; the brightness is way up, and the dark grey (like the outline of Jack himself) is fare too light, making the game look too washed out (and ugly). Nice comparison video though!
Yeah, I'm aware. I'm just a bit lazy with the palettes. For the comparison videos, I'm using the VICE emulator, with its default palette, so I'm not really sure what to do with it. But in that sense, it's on the same level as all the other emulated platforms, since they're all emulated, and I'm not going to do unemulated comparisons because I just don't have enough real hardware for that purpose. For unemulated gameplay footage, check out My Nostalgia Trip Games series and the Let's Play videos from this channel. But anyway, thanks for the comment, and I agree with your comment about the game itself. =)
@@frgcbdude1484 Yeah the combination of the default palette with modern systems nowadays leaves a lot to be desired. Using 'Pepto' palette for example is far too washed out on most sets. You can change the color values under the CRT option within Vice though.
When I heard there was a C64 version I was curious, expecting a superior version (vs the spectrum). Well, big letdown. The graphics on the spectrum are great for the time. The details when the shark changes direction amazed me.
The Spectrum version is the best one.
Won't disagree with that, although the Oric version isn't completely useless either.
The sinclair C5 appearance in super pipeline 2 lol.
Bluemax from synapse was really good for 1983. It's too bad that we lost great american software companies in the mid 80s, especially imagic but also synapse, hesware... Rally speedway was unknown to me when I had a C64 in 1985, I would have loved it. It's like a much improved intellivision auto racing.
Yeah, you're absolutely right. Most of the best early C64 games were Atari games first, and made in the USA. Only the really big companies continued on to make classics for many years on; I just think the biggest mistake was for Epyx to get 100% into Lynx, which basically ended their run. But Synapse, Imagic, HESware, Muse Software etc. ended their run way too early. As for Rally Speedway, it is precisely an improved version of Auto Racing in all possible ways, and I still think it holds as one of the best 8-bit racing games of all time, if not the best. I can guarantee, if you think you could've loved it back then, you will love it now. 😉
@@frgcbdude1484 Oh yeah epyx, another good company tied to atari who bit the dust but a tad later. In the early 80s I associated american games software companies with higher quality compared to the britsh games that had a homemade feel. But it was because they had a headstart with their consoles and computers market. In 1984, when I had a spectrum, I really enjoyed british games (3d combat zone, ant attack, zoom, scuba dive, android 2...). American companies had bigger budgets but british developpers had more freedom. That's how it felt to me. I tried rally speedway, it's really a little gem. But you know how it is, it would have better to play it with my brother in the mid 80s.
Percy the potty pigeon is charming. I love those early spectrum games that portrayed "normal life" in that spectrum pixelated poetic way. They really incite nostalgia in me.
Exactly that! Thanks for the comment!
Scuba dive was splendid for a 1983 game. It was feeling quite... immersive when I was playing in 1984. I did not know there was an oric version.
Yeah, me neither, until I did this episode. So, I'm actually currently working on a comparison of Scuba Dive, should be completed before the month is over.
Nice video gaming series for our beloved Commodore 64 and actually very neat presentation. Definetely deserves more views! I remember seeing Miami Vice loading screen with the ocean loader music on my C64 back in the 80s. I was stunned! Then I remember playing the game. Yeap it wasn't good but I remember a very funny factor of it. When you are in the driving part and you make the car accelerate to like 200mp/h and hit something. I don't know why this thing always seemed funny to me for some reason!
Thanks for your kind comment, remember to tell your friends! =) And yeah, that's pretty much Miami Vice for the C64. XD
I'll remember these tunes until the end of my life. I had this game on the Speccy. That's what made me add sound to my SCART cable, to better listen to them on my TV. I must have been 12 or 13. Awesome game, awesome tunes.
Nice trip thank you for the tour, i was a CPC at the time but got my C128 2 years after.
Subscribed. Thanks for the review online that included my TI-99 version , I wrote it in '21 ... and for it's inclusion here, it's nice to see my games getting a bit of play. One notable thing with my version was said that the walls don't change colour. This is noted, and if I ever make an update to this game then I'll get that fixed . I'm very pleased to see the game ranked among the other versions :)
Hey, thanks for the subscription, and I have to say, it's great to see such an alive game dev community for a machine like TI-99/4a, which I didn't even know existed no more than a decade ago (!) - and even greater to see such good quality games being made for it!
I've played most of these games, thanks for a great video! Your narration is top-notch.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Nice game :-) I know the NES version..
It seems that you came to the Amiga a few years before me, I didn't play many of these titles and never heard of Zany Golf, which looks rather fun. It looks well suited to the Amiga's capabilities; nicely drawn and colourful graphics, good sound effects and music. I've always thought Hostages looks like a good game, though at the same time these games comprising of numerous mini-games have a limited appeal. I would have loved Firepower, that looks like a very fun two player game. My brother and I enjoyed a vaguely similar PD game from a magazine coverdisk in the early 1990s; Firepower would have been even better. Speedball 2 was an absolute instant classic, a superb game. My only regret is that we had a pirated copy, it deserved to be paid for (and of course a manual would have helped for more detailed info on what I was doing!). New Zealand Story is a game I saw occasional references to as a benchmark in great Amiga games, though it came out before we got our Amiga and wasn't the sort of genre that got me salivating, so I never played it. These days, I would probably appreciate it a lot more, though my efforts to get it working via emulation came to nought. Flashback was a bit of a sensation on all 16-bit platforms when it was released, I remember playing the magazine demo disk and being very impressed with the presentation. I also played a demo disk of Lemmings 2 and enjoyed it, a colourful and refreshed update of the original that wowed me in Xmas 1991, but not being a talented puzzle gamer (as much as I liked the original, I got stuck after a while and the same is true when I played it a few months ago with WinUAE!) I didn't get the full game. The Elvira thing always confused me a bit; it was clear that there was some sort of existing cultural reference that I was missing but I couldn't really understand what it was. In any case, I never played the game/s. I found the screenshots of her in magazines mildly titillating but more than an anything a bit embarassing; having erotic stuff in computer games has never been my thing, least of all as a child. Nice video!
Well yeah, iirc, I probably got introduced to the Amiga in 1989, considering some of the first games I played were Take 'Em Out and Zany Golf, both from 1989. Couldn't have been much later. Zany Golf was amazingly good fun back then, and definitely was one of the most important transitional games for me from 8-bits to 16-bits. (EDIT) Hostages is great in short bursts with long intervals, as is Firepower, to be honest. =D Elvira is certainly a bit of a niche thing, and its gameplay is definitely a mixed bag, probably not your thing if you didn't pick up on it back then. As for your comments on the other games, everything you have said is really what I think nostalgia is all about - remembering games in their own timeframe, regardless of how well you regarded them back in the day. If it takes you back to a certain time and place, giving you a memory, it's worth something. I would be interested to know what the coverdisk PD game you mentioned was, though - good PD games can be just as brilliant as commercial games! =)
@@frgcbdude1484 Sorry for the late reply! I don't receive notifications for replies to my RUclips comments (I get too many emails as it is :)), I just spotted it while looking through my comment history. The PD game I was thinking of was, I believe, called "Tanx'n'Stuff". It was simple but a lot of fun!
