The reason these roofs leak so quickly is because of no paper. If you used 18” 30lb paper, you might get 30 years with no leaks and 40 with some good weather.
Staples aren’t legal for composition shingles. Why would you use them for wood shingles. We used plain galvanized Duofast gun nails for years with no issues. Red cedar shingles only last about 15 years. When we reroofed jobs we did originally the steel nails were still holding. We switched to Bostich stainless ring nails before we retired.

Why bother with the chalkline if you're going to be putting the shakes overtop? Also shouldn't there be felt in between the rows?
They only do that with huge reveals which reduces the headlap.
I repair cedar shake and shingle roofs and can tell you hands down nails are superior to Staples. Staples tend to loosen up more over time and as Mason Lord was saying below they cause more splitting to occur.

andtastic1 when installing them over plywood you need a mesh called cedar breather to allow the shingles to have air circulation
Manufacturers are usually very helpful with instillation questions if you give them a call. most will not stand behind their warranty if installed like this video
Stapling wood shingles is a really bad idea. The shingles need to expand and contract. Staples restrict movement and cause the shingles to split.
