Prometheus Unchained

Champion of Humankind. Prometheus created humans by shaping lumps of clay into small figures resembling the gods. Athena admired these figures and breathed on them, giving them life. Zeus disliked the creatures, but he could not uncreate them. He did, however, confine them to the earth and denied them immortality. Prometheus felt compassion for humans, so he gave them fire and knowledge.
Zeus was mad. After so many times being defied by Prometheus, Zeus decided that it was enough. Nevertheless, he made Hephaestus himself to chain Prometheus on Mount Caucasus where the eagle would eat his liver forever.

Thus the mildest criticism of religion is also the most radical and the most devastating one. Religion is man-made. Even the men who made it cannot agree on what their prophets or redeemers or gurus actually said or did. Still less can they hope to tell us the "meaning" of later discoveries and developments which were, when they began, either obstructed by their religion or denounced by them. And yet - the believers still claim to know! Not just to know, but to know everything. Not just to know that god exists, and that he created and supervised the whole enterprise, but also to know what "he" demands of us - from our diet to our observances to our sexual morality. In other words, in a va...

The Roman Pantheon is the most preserved and influential building of ancient Rome. It is a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome. As the brick stamps on the side of the building reveal it was built and dedicated between A.D 118 and 125. The emperor Hadrian (A.D 117-138) built the Pantheon to replace Augustus’ friend and Commander Marcus Agrippa’s Pantheon of 27 B.C. which burnt t...

I still can't believe a man as bright as Hitchens was a supporter of George Bush, and was sickeningly obsequious to Tony Blair. Bush and Blair are evil.
I like the prescience of CHs impromptu enconmium of X. 💥THE DAWKINS DELUSION. If Dawkins really were so repulsed by "religion', then why has Dawkins chosen the most repulsive of religious models for explaining the origins of life? The Darwinists' (and Dawkins') invoking of the idea of a unicellular organism, having emerged and originated from some primordial soup of complex chemicals billions of years ago, was not invented by brilliant scientists; it was invented by primitive, pagan societies e.g., reportedly the Babylonians. Question: How did Dawkins 'evolve' from a rational, hardcore empiricist of a modern scientist to the snake oil salesman of a pseudo-scientist peddling primitive (unfalsifiable) pagan theories of human origins like the first living organism having emerged from a pool of slime like Hollywood's monster from the Blue Lagoon?

Metaphysics is bunk. The only valid propositions are mathematical statements and propositions based on experience. I have followed Pinker for about 10 years and it is a pleasure to be acquainted with his work. He, Dawkins, Dennett, and the rest of the Brights are a welcome antidote to much intellectual rubbish that prevails. If we make the mistake of conferring religion upon our AI robots they will become as insipid as our modern day woo woo artists. (All we need is a pack of AI Jerry Falwells.) Rather a pack of AI Richard Feynmans any day.
It would all also be explained by the thought that he doesnt believe any of the pain or disturbances exist or that he himself exists in the first place lol

I can't help but admire Dawkins patience to answer the same questions over and over again, it must be exhausting to be as famous an atheist as he is and be asked "what do you believe if you don't believe in god?" At least once after every (unrelated) lecture.
I like how Dawkins emphasizes that his book is written for children while dressing an audience of adults. My take is that the adults are too far gone so there is still hope for humanity if you reach them early enough.
If Richard and the rest of these people want to believe thier ancestors swung in trees, thats thier choice, but ill just stay with creation, praise God!
intelligent people don't believe it, we find the evidence sound. you need to believe in an afterlife because you can't face reality
It is good to have evidence for a belief or an opinion. It is also good to know the difference between a word and an object. Not all words have a corresponding object. The only reliable knowledge we have comes from math and from our 5 senses. Everything else is unknown and for now best left that way. Does this seem reasonable to you?

We are input-output entities and all a religion is is an “agreed upon” way of dealing with inputs and/or outputs that each individual dislikes. When enough of these individuals begin “sharing” with others these inputs/outputs, they then find some commonality among those inputs/outputs, as in “Yeah, I get angry and red when I hear or think about homosexuality” that they then rely upon to dictate how they will respond. That is all there is to a religion.

The eternal conundrum of Palestine. A land torn asunder by the conflicting claims of two peoples, each with a legitimate historical and emotional stake in the territory. And yet, as I sit here, pen in hand, I am compelled to express my utter dismay at the current state of affairs. The Israeli occupation, now in its fifth decade, has become a moral and political affront to the very concept of human dignity. The Palestinians, forced to live in a state of perpetual subjugation, their daily lives dictated by the whims of their Israeli overlords, are treated as little more than subjects in a colonial enterprise. And let us not mince words, my friends. This is not a conflict between two equal parties. This is a case of a powerful, nuclear-armed state, backed to the hilt by the world's sole superpower, exerting its dominance over a stateless, occupied people. The apologists for Israel's brutal policies will, no doubt, reach for the familiar tropes: the security concerns, the threat of terrorism, the need for self-defense. But I say, what of the Palestinians' right to self-defense? What of their need for security, for freedom from the constant harassment, humiliation, and violence that comes with living under occupation? And then, of course, there is the settlements issue. These illegal, fortified enclaves, sprung up like mushrooms on occupied land, are a stark reminder of Israel's long-term strategy: to annex, to colonize, and to dispossess. The very notion that these settlements can be considered "negotiable" is a farce. They are an affront to international law, a thumbing of the nose at the very concept of sovereignty. But, I ask you, dear reader, what of the so-called "international community"? Where is the outrage, the condemnation, the collective action to put an end to this egregious injustice? The silence, I fear, is deafening. The United States, that bastion of freedom and democracy, is too busy pandering to the Israeli lobby to take a principled stand. The European Union, that vaunted defender of human rights, is too mired in its own bureaucratic inertia to take meaningful action. And so, the status quo persists. The occupation grinds on, grinding down the very souls of the Palestinian people. The settlements expand, a cancerous growth on the body politic of the region. And the world looks on, aghast, but ultimately impotent. But I say, no more. It is time for the world to take a stand. It is time for us to recognize the fundamental humanity of the Palestinian people, to acknowledge their rights, their dignity, and their freedom. It is time for us to demand an end to the occupation, an end to the settlements, and an end to the impunity that has allowed this situation to fester for so long. The Palestinians are not alone. They have the right to self-determination, to statehood, and to the very same rights and freedoms that we in the West take for granted. And it is our moral duty, as citizens of the world, to stand with them, to stand against oppression, and to stand for justice. Anything less would be a dereliction of our duty as human beings.
Good stuff in here, but Pinker's error is his belief that the mind is the brain.
We are herd animals, we want to belong to a herd and the leader is suppose to think for us. Religions - Cults - The Herd - We belong, follow and stop thinking.

14 years on, and the villification and paranoia regarding the aims of Iran are at fever pitch. Their army and actual capability for domination and destruction are very overestimated. Nuclear capability just levels the playing field and is useful as deterrence, like America, Russia and Israel have. Israel is not a democracy, in the true sense. No constitution, weak judiciary. It's a theocratic, settler Colonial State. The two State solution was never palatable to Israelis, even moderate secular Jews, and has been scuttled at every turn. Iraq pissed the West off because Hussein wanted to control his own resources.
Nature goes on forever for everyone and everything to return as everyone and everything an infinite number of times through evolutionary processes. 🌌
With brains that remember and obsess over mistakes, and worry far into the future, what message would be the most comforting? Love? No. "Absolute certainty," is the message. The problem with this message is that "absolute certainty" doesn't exist and it is always the message espoused by the most diabolical and authoritarian leaders in the world.

only insecure men threaten. God has no such insecurity. Check the video "The Ghosts of Evolution - The Terrors of Natural History" the fear of demons and ghosts is evolutionary baggage from primates under threat from snakes, large cats and other predators in the night. Superstition takes advantage of this human evolutionary baggage.
