ARP 4075 filter modification on an Odyssey MkIII
Просмотров 3992 года назад
In this episode, we take apart a 1978 ARP Odyssey 2823 (Mkiii). We remove the 4075 VCF and correct a design error that prevents the cutoff frequency from opening to its anticipated point. This modification can be done to any ARP synths containing the 4075 filter: - Axxe - Avatar - Odyssey (Mk III and select Mk II models) - Omni - Omni 2 - Pro DGX (Mk II) - Quadra (2x 4075 VCF)

    Thank you for this. I’m planning to install the Kiwi 3P Matrix into mine soon. Just wondering, what diameter solder are you using?

    Hello Synthdoctor, I tried to open the link but seems the time is not anymore on Ebay. Actually i found a seller "SCSKITS" who sells this kit, but unfortunately he does not ship to Europe 😞. Can you help to address the right seller for this PSU's? I have a P5 rev3.3 (the one with + - 22Volts cominf from the PSU). Many thanks, Lorenzo.

      How did you fix the freq range on the oscillators? mine also ranges differently...putting both to 0 gives me a G note on the C0 key.

    Please stop butchering these amazing synths with the Kiwi mod, use the Organix/series circuits mod to fix the MIDI instead.

    I’ve heard from people like Espen Kroft that the kiwi mod “ruins” the sound of the 3p by changing its envelopes, making it more clinical and less characterful. Do you have an opinion? Any chance you could do pinpoint a comparison of a kiwi to a stock jx-3p?

    Great video. I have the KIWI mod for my JX-8P but have held off as it seems at least anecdotally that these mods alter the signature sound of the synths. Sure they may sound great but different.Personally I am now coming over to the view that just buying a new synth is the answer if I need new features.

      I'm knee deep in trying to mod my 3P with the Kiwi mod and it isn't going well. I don't think I've broken anything, but, as I got into the weeds of the main board there were so many odd little modifications and I'm starting to think it was all to avoid problems with grounding. Since I decided to take the risk and jump in as a novice with some soldering skills, I knew there was a possibility I'd be in over my head. I'd definitely say that just buying a new synth is the smarter idea. As for me, I'll keep working on it until I get it working. I may end up just trying to fulling return it to original specs rather than doing the mod.

    Great video! Thanks. I just did this mod for a client of mine, unfortunately now there is no sound coming out. I am not a synth guy at all so I don't know much about MIDI, however I am an audio technician and work on a lot of audio gear. This is the second mod I have done for this particular client, the first one worked great but this one not so much. I double checked my work and everything seems to be fine. The intel chip came out very easily so I don't think there are any damaged traces. The synth powers up and the LEDs come on, the buttons are doing things but i am not getting any audio. I am listening out of the headphone output because I don't have a speaker set up here. Do you have any suggestions? I'm kind of in a pickle here. Thanks

    This mod ruins the Jx-3p sound signature, sounds good but would rather have it sound like a jx-3p still. I am not sure if the new Kiwi matrix mod they came out with you can maintain the original sound.

    • @synthdoctor3310
      @synthdoctor3310 2 года назад

      I have heard that as well. I prefer it to sound like a jx3p as well hence why I said I kept my original unit the same and used the organix mod to improve midi functionality. This was done for a customer.

    Great vid. When soldering in the socket, how did you verify that the top layer pads flowed?

    • @synthdoctor3310
      @synthdoctor3310 2 года назад

      Thanks Sandro. Great question, when soldering 2 sided boards you’ll notice that you first melt a blob of solder onto the pad. I keep the iron it it for a second or 2, then the bubble will get sucked down through the pad to the other side. Every time you’ll see the blob go down. When flipping over and looking carefully at the socket you will see a nice solder joint at each pin. With good practice it’s very consistent.

    At 14:40 till 14:47 the tact switches won't come out after using the desoldering gun. At 14:48 they do after the editing cut in the video. What was in between?

    • @synthdoctor3310
      @synthdoctor3310 2 года назад

      There was still a bit of solder holding on to the top side if I remember correctly. Rinse and repeat and they came right out.

    I've got a Rev2 P5 with original PS and Caps. Synth works and sounds great. After talking to my Tech today and watching this wonderful video I'm thinking of having him upgrade the PS. He also pointed out and recommended that the Tantalum Caps(~20 in total?) be replaced; once they start going you have booting as well as other issues. I noticed my boot time is fairly long...not sure if related? Would love your thoughts. The idea of future proofing appeals to me; give me piece of mind. Thx

    • @synthdoctor3310
      @synthdoctor3310 3 года назад

      Wow, an original rev 2 that's still working, quite amazing. Thanks for stopping by. Yes those tantalum caps are a ticking time bomb and will absolutely short out in the near future. Mine completely shorted out the +15v rail on the analog board. MIDI really stresses the original power supply. If you are going to recap the supply, I would recommend replacing it. The one I use can be configured for a rev 2 with the extra regulators installed. Regarding boot time, I believe the rev 2 does have a slightly different autotune algorithm. Boot on any prophet 5 revision will take longer than simply running autotune. Boot is slower because the calibration constants are not saved in NVRAM. Upon boot, the synth has to initialize all of the look up tables with the offsets it calibrates using successive approximation for each oscillator. When running the tune algorithm again, it only calculates the differences. The less far off the tuning is, the quicker it will complete. How long is your boot time roughly?

      Hi, the brilliance slider with the center detent is unique to the 3p, but the other sliders are also found in the 106.
