Mars rover trials
Rover trials in a quarry in the UK showing a four-wheeled rover, known as Codi, using its robotic arm and a powerful computer vision system to pick up sample tubes.
The rover drives to the samples with an accuracy of 10cm, constantly mapping the terrain. Codi uses its arm and four cameras to locate the sample tube, retrieve it and safely store it on the rover - all of it without human intervention. At every stop, the rover uses stereo cameras to build up a 180-degree map of the surroundings and plan its next maneouvres. Once parked, the camera on top of the mast detects the tube and estimates its position with respect to the rover. The robotic arm initiates a complex choreography to move ...

Timelapse video of the third European Service Module (ESM-3) as it left the assembly halls of Airbus Space in Bremen, Germany, in a custom-built container on 16 August 2024. Built in Italy, assembled in Germany, and with contributions from all over Europe, ESA is delivering this service module to NASA as part of the Artemis III mission to the Moon. The third European Service Module began its jo...
Space Rider drop tests

In 2024 the Space Rider team is running a drop-test campaign whereby a full-scale model of the future orbital laboratory Space Rider is dropped from a helicopter to test and qualify the deployment of its parachutes, at Salto di Quirra in Sardinia, Italy. The Space Rider project is an uncrewed laboratory about the size of two minivans that will be able to stay in orbit for up to two months. The ...
New variable engine undergoes dynamic testing

A new variable-thrust engine was recently tested with different rates of propellant flowing through it, controlled by a new system of valves to control the flow of propellant along with a movable ‘pintle’ injector, all being commanded by an electronic control system. A throttleable engine like this has many future applications, from landing rocket stages on Earth to upper stage ‘kick stages’ an...

Improving Arctic and global weather forecasts
Просмотров 69Месяц назад
ESA’s Arctic Weather Satellite aims to improve weather forecasts in the Arctic - a region that currently lacks data for accurate short-term forecasts. It is equipped with a 19-channel cross-track scanning microwave radiometer which will provide high-resolution humidity and temperature soundings of the atmosphere in all weather conditions. The Arctic Weather Satellite is the forerunner of a pote...
Arctic Weather Satellite deploys solar wings

Once in orbit, ESA’s Arctic Weather Satellite deploys its solar wings. Spanning 5.5 metres from end to end, the panels provide the satellite with the power it needs to operate in space. As its name suggests, the Arctic Weather Satellite mission is designed to show how a potential polar-orbiting constellation of satellites could provide data for very short-term weather forecasts and nowcasts in ...

Part of Agenda 2025, the ESA Green Agenda is an agency-wide programme that addresses environmental challenges by reducing ESA's greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the benefits of the agency’s space projects for the sustainable development of society. Director General Josef Aschbacher explains the agency's environmental goals and why the ESA Green Agenda is necessary. Access this video on t...
Determining ESA's environmental impact
Просмотров 36Месяц назад
The idea that if you cannot measure something you cannot improve it holds especially true in the world of greenhouse gas emissions. As ESA commits to shrinking its environmental impact, the question arises: Where do we direct our efforts, and how do we gauge success? ESA plans to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations by 2030 by 46% for its operational activities and by 28% for th...
Ariane 6 launch montage: one liftoff, many views

What would it be like to ride on Ariane 6 as it launched into space on 9 July 2024? Footage captured from various cameras fixed to the side of the giant rocket shows just this. See the fire roar beneath the rockets main engine, watch the P120C boosters propel the launcher into orbit and then separate, fuel spent. From another angle half of the rocket’s protective shielding separates and wobbles...
Up close and personal: Ariane 6 liftoff from the launchpad

While no person could get this close during Ariane 6’s inaugural flight on 9 July 2024, several small cameras bravely witnessed its take-off from the launchpad. After years of preparations, the Vulcain main stage engine ignites, arms providing cryogenic fuels to the rocket until the very last moment retract and boosters fire - Ariane 6 is space-bound. As it lifts off, vast amounts of water are ...
