Don't give up. You will blend easily right into your bio family if you give yourself enough time, patience and tolerance. You should live in a big city like you said you would like to. You don't need to live with your bio family for now. If you live long enough in the city, it's easy for you will learn and understand the culture. From there, you can come closer to your bio family. You were raised outside China after all. So, time and patience will get you where you want to be. It will take a little bit longer but once you get there, you're not only closer to your bio family and also blend right into China. Nobody is going ask you where you came from.

I hope you and your bio family have been giving yourselves grace. You are dealing with multiple challenges: language and cultural differences, geographical distance, pent-up emotions about the 20-year separation. I hope you all navigate through all that.

Everything is fake in China and the pressures are enormous. You will be bothered to marry, have a child. Marry the person the parents choose for you.

Don't feel pressured to learn chinese and be the perfect daughter for them. They can also learn english if it was as important to them as it was to you to make them happy and connect. Don't get me wrong learning Chinese will be invaluable but don't do it for your parents.

Thank you for sharing your story. My wife was the 2nd daughter to a family in central China in the late 80's. Her story is very different than yours, her family had the ability to bribe the local authorities so she was not aborted, but she still had a difficult life and was shunned by many in their community. Her dad, a great guy, made it his life goal to get both his daughters out of China. He still lives in China, but both his daughters live wonderful lives overseas (in the US and Canada).

I know what your identity is. You are an American. Be grateful. If you want to throw your life away and move to China, go ahead. I bet you would not make 3 months over there. China is a cesspool nation. They can not suppress their hurry up and grab the money urge enough to even build a good bridge. They have concrete bridges less than a year old falling apart. The greed gene is rampant in China.

I would not recommend white people adopt outside their race as race is incredibly important to non-whites and the resentment will be crushing coming from someone you gave your all to as Kati’s parents and community did.

Usually people learn a language well when they are in the country. If you couldn't learn Chinese in China then you may need to look at yourself and see what the problem is. It is not possible for you to be white. You are an Chinese American. Don't shy away from what you are. Be proud of being Chinese and if you go back to learn your language immerse yourself in the society and don't think about what people may think about you. Relax and enjoy life.

if i were you, i would disconnect with your born parents because china is a terrible country with awful people. you were given up and u should be very happy that you weren't given up in places like Mexico or any south American countries. you just be the best adopted kid to your ameircan parents and show appreciation how they gave you this life.

Culture and language difficulties can be healed with love i am bilingual and the only way you will become fluent is to stay and speak daily 24/7 Or over FaceTime etc speaking daily it’s the only way you’ll hear and learn but you want to read and write by connecting the word visually with what you hear Language I love learning so don’t give up you must dive in and just learn

Came here after seeing a clip by a Chinese RUclipsr. Gotta say she is raised well as an elegant lady and educator. Her adopted parents seem to be very kind and loving ones. I do not know what the reason of abandonment by her biological parents was, but wouldn’t be so harsh on them if one knows about China One Child Policy. For her bio parents, it would mean all kinds of punishment aside from financial which would have already bankrupted them, another choice was abortion, which they chose not to so she has a chance to live as fate brought her. It was the CCP hooligan policy that caused this and Kati’s is not the only victim. Hope Kati could continue to do well and loved, to love those who cherishes her

Kati, you will be right at home in Singapore. Here most local Chinese are comfortable with English and Mandarin. American and China cultures are well accepted. Singapore is a good East West bridge. Hi Kati! I watched the BBC story on your family and then three years later after learning mandarin I rewatched the chinese version by BBC China. I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to share:) I come from a similar background and its not always easy navigating life especially as an adoptee. Also saw your linkedin and see that you found yourself in Prague. I stayed with a friend of mine there in 2019 loll. It would be cool to talk sometime if you have time!
