He Comes in the Night by Angeline Morrison
This song started life as a ghost story, inspired mostly by accounts of a suburban UK haunting of the late C20. It then shape shifted into a wondering about what it would be like to love the ghost and look forward to their visits, which also led to a little musing on part of the story of Eros and Psyche where Psyche is not permitted to see her beloved.
This song appears on the forthcoming OPHELIA album - scheduled for general release October 2024.

Jump Billy by Angeline Morrison and The Sorrow Songs Band.
Просмотров 200Месяц назад
“Jump Billy” is a new song by Angeline Morrison about Billy Waters (d.1823), the Black London street performer who was formerly enslaved in America, and was also an able seaman in the British Royal Navy. The Sorrow Songs Band here perform the song live at the book launch of Dr Mary L Shannon’s new scholarly work about his life, “Billy Waters is Dancing” (Yale University Press). Keeping the spir...

Another clip from the book launch of Dr Mary L Shannon’s new scholarly work on Billy Waters, “Billy Waters is Dancing” (Yale University Press). Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne leads this shanty on his anglo concertina. The song names all the places in the world that a sailor has travelled, and maybe echoes the experiences as a Royal Navy able seaman of Billy Waters, the formerly enslaved African Ame...

The Lark in the Morning is played by Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, Clarke Camilleri and Hamilton Gross at the book launch of “Billy Waters is Dancing” by Dr Mary L Shannon (Yale University Press). Keeping the spirit of formerly enslaved African American London street musician Billy Waters alive is very important. Billy (d.1823) was one of London’s earliest known celebrated Black musicians. He was...

The Sorrow Songs Band getting together to rehearse Jump Billy, Angeline’s new song about Billy Waters. Brother Billy, who died in dire poverty in a workhouse in St Giles, London, 1823, was a formerly enslaved African American musician. He lost a leg in an accident on board ship while serving in the British Royal Navy, and developed dance routines using his wooden prosthesis. He was a renowned a...
April Come She Will (Simon & Garfunkel 1966)

To welcome in the month of April, a tender and yearning song from Simon & Garfunkel, first recorded in 1965. The message of this song haunts me so that I find it hard to sing without tears coming. The last line especially gets me….
The Map and The Light
Просмотров 1835 месяцев назад
The song The Map and The Light is dedicated to my beloved Grandpa Morrison, whom I had a very strong bond with, and who died when I was a child. He came to live with us for a couple of years as he had dementia, and would often become forgetful or confused, or wander off. One day he couldn’t be found. I thought to myself, if only I can sneak outside, I’ll be able to follow the golden thread that...
Roud 808 : “Christmas is Now Drawing Near at Hand”
Просмотров 1817 месяцев назад
Roud 808, Christmas is Now Drawing Near at Hand. This dark, fascinating and rather rmoralising ballad was apparently a popular choice for singers who were begging around the festive season. It was also collected from Traveller people in and around the West Midlands, by Sharp and Vaughan Williams. A version of this song was printed in Birmingham (aka Broadside Motown) in 1910. There’s also a ver...

Going on a little walk to a clootie well or sacred well, where people have left some special offerings... I love to walk a song, and today I’m taking Bushes and Briars with me. It’s said that this is the first traditional song heard by Ralph Vaughan Williams... I love the story of longing in this one. #folksong #clootiewell #bushesandbriars #traditionalsong

The Brown Girl (Roud 180, Child 295)
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Год назад
I first learned The Brown Girl from the singing of Martin Carthy, though this version is from the singing of Frankie Armstrong. This song always strikes me as more of a revenge fantasy than an attempted homicide. The brown girl in this version feels slightly less hot and angry than she does in others - but she still knows her worth. I used to dream and wonder about whether the girl in this song...

Beautiful song, deeply moving and sung beautifully; very much like an old lullaby from the distant past. Fits perfectly into the folk tradition. It's a rare gift to be able write something that sounds as if it might have been written centuries ago. I can envisage this song covered by many artists in the future. Really beautiful.

Saw her performing at Wood Festival, was blown away. I have always naturally liked that genre, but also had found it museified into archaic or outdated ideas and references. She researches folk songs, and found a lot unsingable in a modern context, and I agree. She has brought it to be relevant to our times with love and care, research and craft. She is bringing the poetic and musical expression of our time to a timeless quality.

Awesome. Honest Jons record shop brought me here. I was browsing their website for jazz etc. but not anything resembling this. The title grabbed my attention, “The Sorrow Songs.” I never thought of an “inherent beauty of sad songs” because of somewhat contradiction. This album has eclipsed everything that I have listened to in the past year. Is the single, “Unknown African Boy (d.1830) on vinyl? Beautiful voice!!

Saw her sing this on Jools Holland and instantly a fan. So beautiful and moving. I agree with one of the other posts, about the ridiculously low number of likes. When you think of some of the crap that gets millions of likes, it is ridiculous that at the time I post this it is not even in three figures. I'm sure for the artist herself it is not about the numbers at all, but I think something like this of such quality, beauty and depth should be known about and appreciated by a wider audience. (Actually have looked again and there have been 2.3K views - have those that did not 'like' the video got hearts of stone!)
