Derrickdavis: which of Mateer’s losses against average and bad mountain west teams concern you the most now that he will be facing much tougher SEC defenses? Was it Mateer’s loss to Oregon State? Were you even aware there is an Oregon State football team out there? I wasn’t. look it up. Oregon State is ranked #97 in cfb. Is it the New Mexico State loss that Mateer had that concerns you the most? New Mexico is ranked #104th in cfb. Is it Washington State and qb Mateer’s (and new OU OC Ben Arbuckles) loss to Wyoming in 2024 that concerns you the most about Mateer’s ceiling vs the SEC in 2025? Wyoming is ranked #121 in college football. And they beat John Mateer and his Washington State team in 2024. Those aren’t their only losses, look it up. Locked On Sooners hasnt really talked about this subject in any depth. It’s probably not good for business, frankly, if your job is to sell sunshine to OU fans. Anyway, surely all that returning OU O-line production will make all the difference right? Those world beaters will protect Mateer and everyth… wait. the OU o-line was last in the entire nation, THE ENTIRE NATION, along with California, in “sacks given up” in 2024, with 50 sacks given up. ooops. If you’re buying a transcendent season for OU football in 2025, without any actual evidence yet that it could happen, i’ve got a bridge to sell you, sir.

I'm leary of 5 star players now. We've had so many that didn't do shit. Then we've had 3 star players that were fantastic. Too bad they can't measure the heart, at the end of the day that is all that matters. I'll take a 3 star with heart over a 5 star that just wants to get paid, anyday of the week!

@@EdwardHixson”heart-thats all that matters!” is all i saw sooner fans saying right when hawkins got the qb1 nod- and it reached absurd heights on the comments sections and message boards, for exactly ONE WEEK, when all of you “heart is all that matters!” fans were shown on the field that hawkins was too small, had too weak of an arm, and had not enough o-line help, for all that heart to make the difference. It takes a lot more than heart, partner. A lot more.

Here, i’ll add another one: OU had a 2-6 conference record in their first year in the SEC. They beat Alabama and Auburn. 11 Alabama had just blown out Mercer leading up to the unranked OU game, and faced yearly rival Auburn in the next week’s Iron Bowl. Alabama clearly appeared to be sleeping on OU; their attention was certainly on the next week’s Iron Bowl. They’ll have the OU game circled 3 X with stars around it in 2025. Auburn was the only other SEC team that OU beat in 2024, in a one score 27-21 victory. Now Auburn has Jackson Arnold as their likely starting QB in ‘25. How do the Locked On Sooners staff imagine Jackson Arnold feels about that game? After JA was benched, booed, heckled, treated horribly by OU world: much of the OU press and fanbase seemed to blame Arnold for all of the Sooner’s offensive woes. Jay and John: do you think Jackson Arnold will show up to play against OU in 2025? Having been OU’s starting QB, will he intimately understand OU’s starting defense, it’s wrinkles, tendencies and weaknesses, and be prepared to play the best college football game of his life against the team and fanbase that treated him rather poorly? Will he have something to prove against the OU that dumped him early for a smaller, less arm-talented Michael Hawkins? Will JA’s motivation and preparation for that game be greater than the OU defense’s motivation and knowledge of JA’s strengths and weaknesses, enough to overcome OU and gain some face, respect, revenge, and future NFL $$, in the rematch? What do you guys think?

@@RobertGraham-x9onah, my longhorns are doing fine. I focus on them too. They just went 13-3, and have a lot of reason to be optimistic about how 2025 is going to be. Do you know how many players UT lost to the draft and portal at the end of 2023, and yet look at how UT did in 2024. We lose LESS going into 2025 than we lost going from 2023 into 2024. The sky’s the limit, really, for Texas. a few questions, sure, every team has them in todays cfb world, but nothing alarming, tbh. it REALLY helps to have super stable, winning coaches and coordinators and well-established offensive and defensive systems going into their veteran years of implementation. Not having many questions or concerns about our head coach is super nice. He keeps winning and taking the horns farther and farther each year. Until that changes, we will keep celebrating. MEANWHILE, things are MUCH, MUCH more interesting for the Sooners, OU keeps changing things up drastically with a new OC, so a new offensive identity is incoming; a new QB who looks skilled, BUT it’s against way less talented competition than the SEC, and he’s actually lost a lot of games vs mid and bad teams. All the stuff up in the air for OU after a historically bad first season in the SEC (going 2-6 in conference play in your first year in the new conference is a really really bad look, a black eye and a bad memory that will never really go away, i’m afraid. It will be a big stain on OU’s proud tradition and history for 100 years or more), with systemic issues that haven’t been solved or even diagnosed correctly yet, makes your program alot of fun to follow and be engaged with. 😅

@ not offended at all. I just think OU isn’t keeping up with the SEC in recruiting. We are going to be middle of the pack for the foreseeable future.

Yada, yada. 🥱We heard y'all all preseason '24 talking crazy. I was actually intrigued after all the smack talk and sabre rattling and took a vested interest in OU's '24 season. I watched every game OU played, unfortunately. I am definitely not a fan and even I have second hand embarrassment by OU's product on the field. But, maybe they will be miraculously improved in less than 9 months with all the new moving parts and pieces. You know, Sooner Magic and all, lol🧚‍♂️🪄🌠

@@SP-mh9qwI had a vested interest too in the 2024 OU season; as a longhorn alum and longtime Texas fan, I was hate-watching every 2024 OU game and let me tell you, did this season deliver. I think I gained new laugh lines in my face this year, the joy and unbridled happiness from seeing the hilarious Sooner play, the absolute imploding on every level of the offense, it provided joy in an also enchanted year for my horns. SP, I highly recommend becoming a sooner hater for 2025-you will have some of the most fun of your life watching the pile of fail that we are guaranteed to see as the Sooner schedule is even harder in 2025 than it was in 2024, with the addition of 8-5 Michigan early, and some away trips that won’t be easy. Not to mention, dont you know Bama has OU circled 5x this year after sleeping on them a week before their Iron Bowl matchup v rivals Auburn. And, JA’s going to show out for Auburn this time vs OU. Can’t wait.

Yea, and now Auburn has that QB that is late on reads and unwilling to pull the trigger. But hey I don't want to point fingers. 🤣

@@HeadlessAceI want you to know how much unbridled joy, mirth and sheer happiness your OU team gave me this year as i hate watched every sooner game. I developed new laugh lines on my face as the sooners found every possible way to lose in ‘24, from not scoring a single td vs their arch rivals Texas (also known as their daddy), to giving up 50 sacks in a single season (was this a OU record?), to the fans and coach horse-tackling poor jackson to put in THE HAWK, and to LMAO for a week at how the OU fanbase crowned the hawk as their lord and savior that week until he played in the next game and the sooners all realized he was too small and couldn’t throw well enough (esp behind that execrable O-line from h3ll) to be their next t-down Jesus. What a hate-watch season! I had more fun watching the sooners than my beloved horns this year, despite the incredible success UT had. I feel like i’ve been uplifted and laughing 4 straight months, and i was sad after that last regular season game-until I saw OU lose to a service academy team in the “what the h3ll are you doing here?” bowl. Watching Okuno cry, watching Jay and John dissemble, watching RJ about to throw something through the camera after every OU game…I may be going to h3ll for my joy at all this suffering but man did i need it after the last 25 years of cfb as a Texas fan (other than some notable victories). So, thank you for this year, sooner fan! I can’t WAIT to watch every second of OU’s 2025 year, starting with the inevitable beat down that 8-5 Michigan is about to hand you.
