Exploring the musical world of modular synthesis through VCV Rack patches.
Hi There! I'm currently in the "learning to make generative music in VCV Rack" phase of my musical journey, hoping to eventually graduate into the "I make generative music in VCV Rack" state. But the expectation is that it will take a while until that point has been reached, so until then there will be a lot of studying and experimenting. I will be sharing the results of this experimentation on this channel. Feel free to join me on the journey!

FPTTTP | Generative Ambient Patch in VCV Rack 2
It all started with experiments using delays for one of my previous projects. That sparked the idea for a VCV Rack tutorial on delay effects. As I finished the tutorial patch, I realized it had even more potential, so I continued working on it-and it evolved into a full patch of its own. From patch to tutorial to patch, it's a bit of a 'patch-inception'.
The previous patch with the delays can be found here: ruclips.net/video/iB4336R385c/видео.html
*Tutorial starting point*
In the upcoming tutorial (currently in progress), I’ll break down the construction of the four melodic starting voices. To keep things simple and accessible, the tutorial uses a straightforward chord sequence. In this patc...

Three voices that generate their note sequences by combining a random and a more stable input signal are created in this tutorial, resulting in a full patch from scratch. This tutorial patch was the starting point for the recently released PTWSLY patch (ruclips.net/video/Ip7A3ffyKiQ/видео.html). Modules used in this tutorial: - Bogaudio 4FO - Bogaudio AD - MindMeld AuxSpander - Audible Instrume...

While doing some cleanup in the "unsorted" directory where I keep my unfinished VCV patches and experiments, I ran into a patch that was started last year (and not used since). Judging from the rectangular layout of the patch, I suspect it was something that I considered as a potential source for a tutorial (which I might still do now that I've rediscovered it almost 8 months later). It didn't s...

After getting an interesting voice using a double delay, I decided to spend some time playing with delays. After a lot of experimenting, a bunch of failed attempts and a couple of working ideas, I ended up with this patch. The voice that started it all is simple enough: every four beats, play one of the notes of the current chord through a Dark Energy module. That is sent into a SurgeXT delay. ...

If I had to describe this patch in one sentence it would be: this patch took way to long to make. I kept running in circles, so I had to stop working on this patch multiple times. I even completed two other patches first: NCPJCM (which uses no chord progressions as a reaction to the issues I had with this patch) and TPZ (which uses parts of the chord sequence and structuring as used here). The ...

I suspect that @julienrbaker isn't often mentioned as the inspiration behind a modular synth patch, but that is the case here. Ziptie, the last track on her Little Oblivions album, is such a beautiful closer (ruclips.net/video/13T7AoTRORc/видео.html). So while I was enjoying listening to it on a walk during my lunch break, I started wondering if there wasn't something I could do in VCV Rack bas...

No chord progression, just a C major chord. There are three unfinished patches on my computer. Working on them has been a bit of a struggle. Getting the chord progressions to play nicely over the different voices, looking for interesting melodic voices that go along with it, trying to figure out how to sequence everything, etc. So I decided it was time to cleanse my palate a bit. Work on someth...
Two Ideas for Generating Note Sequences | Patch from Scratch | Tutorial for VCV Rack 2
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.4 месяца назад
Two different ideas for generating note sequences are combined into a single voice in this tutorial, resulting in a full patch from scratch. Once I created the patch for this tutorial, I wanted to take it a bit further. So after continuing to build on it, this turned into my earlier released FRMTRL patch (ruclips.net/video/EUVZh759hmI/видео.html) This voice was created specifically for this tut...

This patch started out with an idea for a tutorial. The idea revolves around the generation of a randomized melodic voice, based on two different note sequencing ideas. The tutorial can be found at ruclips.net/video/38-2Dzp4kO4/видео.html Once I had the patch that was going to be used for the tutorial, I wanted to try and further evolve it to see where it would lead me. So that is where the mel...

Four Chords in C Minor. That's pretty much the central idea around which this patch is created. This time around, I wanted to let the chord and the mood be the main focus point of the patch. Something that just moves into the background when it has been playing for a while. That is why the two voices that can try to steal the attention away from the chord progressions are only triggered every s...

A bit less randomness, a bit more control. Instead of creating a generative patch and letting algorithms generate the music within the set constraints, I wanted to take (almost) everything in my own hands. I may have been inspired in this direction by listening to Omri Cohen's modular compositions channel multiple times 😉 (you can check it out at @MyModularMusic) There was one thing I noticed h...

Don't make it complex, keep it simple. That's the thought behind this patch. It started with a simple voice: the Macro Oscillator 2 (i.e. Mutable Instruments Plaits) in Chords mode into a filter and then into a wet-only reverb. The module is playing a constant pitch, but an Instruo Ochd modulates the harmonics, timbre and morph values so that both the chords that the module plays and the way it...

I've been trying to check out the different @instruo modules in the last couple of releases, and this patch is no different. It ended up using Instruo for four of the voices. It started with the Instruo Saïch module: an oscillator that accepts multiple note inputs and combines them in its output. It receives the root, third and fifth notes of the active chord from the Harmonaìg module. Using Oc...

love it, absolutely amazing
Glad you like it!
I'm brand new to VCV rack, I really enjoyed your ambient patch step-by-step tutorial please do more maybe even this one
I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed the tutorial. As for a tutorial for a full patch, that would result in a video that's quite long, as it would require covering a lot of voices in detail. That’s why most of my tutorials focus on just one or two voices from a patch-like the ambient patch tutorial you mentioned, which is in fact based on one of the voices from this full patch. I am still working on new content, and actually, I'm currently putting together a tutorial featuring four voices using delay modules. I hope to have that ready sometime within the week!
Can you back off the mike please? Sounds like you're chewing on my ears.
Thank you for your feedback. I’ll try to improve the balance between mic distance and volume in future recordings. It’s a lower output mic, but I’ll do my best to adjust accordingly.
Absolutely beautiful! My favorite patch this year! Thanks for starting off my crappy morning with a little of light in a dark place.
Thanks, glad you like it! Hope your day keeps getting brighter from here on out.
Very beautiful!
Thanks!
Great.. the flow and fluidity of transients is evoking sense of a smoke wisps that lingers and leave only trails..
as if the smoke trails are the delayed witnesses of a fire that has faded away 😊
Smasher as always m8, love it 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you very much 👍😁
Good bro, you make it easy to understand.
Thanks a lot! Glad it was easy to follow.
Nice demonstration using all the features of the Bernoulli Gate. I'm surprised an envelope generator wasn't used to alter probability over time, but there's often more than one way to do things.
Thanks! Envelopes are indeed powerful modulation sources. I tend to use them mostly when paired with a VCA or VCF, so I should actually try to get into the habit of using them more in other scenarios too 😊
Great howto! Thx!
Thank you!
Really good tutorials, good explanation of the modules and giving some ideas for patches. Keep up this video series!
Thank you for the positive feedback! I’m glad you’re finding the tutorials helpful. I’ll continue creating more as inspiration and time allow.
These tutorials are great and really, really clear as well as very beginner friendly
Thanks! I try to ensure that these tutorials are accessible even if there is little to no prior knowledge. Glad to hear I didn't fail in that 😉
The fact that you did a cover on VCV rack is insane
To be honest, by the time I had finally finished setting up all the separate steps in sequencing the different voices, it definitely felt like insanity had moved a couple of steps closer 😉
Good info. Thank YOU❤
Thank you, happy to hear you found it useful 😊
This is awesome! Love it! 🎛🎚🎶
Thank you! 😁
@@not-things You're very welcome! 🙏 I wish I knew how to create a project similar to this. I've searched many times for VCV Rack 2 tutorials but it seems like everyone only shows the end result but never how to create it.
A full tutorial for a bigger patch like this one would take a lot of time, and would probably become to long to remain watchable and understandable. But I do have some shorter "from scratch" tutorials on my channel that show certain aspects of my patches (the tutorials have a green logo instead of a red logo on the thumbnail image). This patch was actually started from the VCV patch that is created in my recent "Three stable and randomized sequences" tutorial.
diving into deep sea and like swimming among the dolphins where they come and go to know you better.. :)
That's a nice way to describe it, thanks! 😁
Thanks so much. Really interesting tutorial. I'm a beginner and learned a huge amount.
Great to hear!
Thanks for sharing this video. It's a beautiful sound, and following along with the tutorial was really insightful.
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
Very interesting tutorial, not to mention the use of the Offset module which I don't know and which is very useful. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thank you, always nice to hear when a tutorial provided useful information 👍
fascinating 😳
thanks 😁
Hi Thanks for the great tutorials, I mentioned you and linked to your youtube channel as I learnt quite a bit from your channel. Here's mine www.youtube.com/@ModularNites Your tutorials were used for 'animal magic' and modular nights v2 thanks again james ps, I tried to email you but couldn't get past human verification.
Very cool soundscape.
Thank you!
How long did you get into vcv till you were able to understand what you are doing? I watched the tutorial to this patch. And it seems you exactly know what module to choose for what purpose. As if you already have sort of a plan of what a patch should consist of. I kind of want to understand how much time I need to invest to get a good base. I follow a lot of tutorials by rebuilding the shown patches but it’s always just understanding small parts maybe. Right now this feels like math lessons in school (I sucked but survived it somehow 😅).
I also did spend a couple of months only following along with tutorials before I started experimenting on my own. And even after that, it took longer before getting more comfortable with it (which comes down to having more experience, having tried out more combinations and knowing more modules because you used them before). It probably helps that I have a background is software development, so understanding the smaller parts and figuring out how to build a bigger whole out of them kinda comes with the territory 😉. At the time of this Ranar patch, I was almost a year into my VCV journey. Also take into account that in my tutorials, I'm not inventing those patches on the spot. I first try to create a patch around an idea I have for a tutorial. And only when I get something that I like (usually after some time experimenting), I record the tutorial recreating that patch, together with an explanation of what I'm doing.
@@not-things Thank you for taking the time to answer in such detail 🫶🏻 and mentioning the time it took you to get where you were at this stage. It really helps to get a feeling for how much patience i might need🤓. But it’s so much fun and listening to your patch made me kind of shout out loud THIS IS WHAT I WANT🤩 so thank you for sharing! It’s such a motivation for me🙌🏻
Nice work!
Thanks!
Nice tuto about Nullpath!
Thanks! It's a nice set of modules with some interesting possibilities.
You are a genius brother, thank you so much for sharing this knowledge in a very simple way as anybody could understand. Keep inspiring
Thank you! Glad you found the tutorial helpful.
that's a lot of modules! Gorgeous sounds
Thank you! There were actually even more modules in there while I was trying to take some control over the blending of the voices over time. But I removed them near the end of the patch construction because it simply wasn't working as intended 😄
Very nice!were all sounds synthesized or some samples? It sounds amazing
Thank you! It's all synthesized as the patch is playing. Even the Simpliciter module that you can see in the middle of the second row is continuously recording the synthesized voice that's in front of it and then mixing in the recorded sample in reverse.
@@not-things thats amazing it sounds so good!
Sometimes you can't help wishing that certain patches were downloads - really nice piece
Thank you! I am thinking to somewhere down the line (when I find time for it) create a tutorial about how I used the delays in this patch. It won't be the full patch, but it will contain some parts of it 😉
lovely sound :)
Thanks :-)
creative and inspiring ty
Glad you liked it 😊
I don't understand ... so few likes. This is an amazing work to patch !
Thanks a lot, glad you like it 😊
A gorgeous spaghetti monster. Any tips for cleaner drones?
Thanks! I'm also still experimenting a lot to try and figure out what works and what doesn't. It's usually a case of "less is more", except in those cases where it needs a little more 😉
Excellent. How much CPU was that using?
Thanks! VCV Rack itself reports around 75% average CPU usage (Thread count is set to 2 in the Engine menu), and Windows Task Manager reports Rack.exe as using 43% CPU (on an Intel Core i7-11700)
masterful patching! And you are a masochist for using all red!
Thank you kindly! And what can I say, I like red ... 😉
Chill and lovely
Thanks!
An amazing composition. Wonderful sound and movement.
Thank you very much!
Quite complex patch and great example of know-how. Overall beautiful composition. The path to the modular synthesizer can sometimes be arduous. ♥
Thank you, glad you liked it 😊
Arduous indeed. There's live modular, which can be as simple as a few modules, and then there's this, a whole other level, this is preconfigured and highly complex, generative but controlled throughout... it's such a beauty to behold.
On the other hand, I don't think I would be able to pull off a patch that I would be happy with using just a few modules. That's an art in itself.
impressive
Thanks!
Epic!🤟💥
Thank you! 👍😁
Wonderful!
Thank you!
What beautiful and clever work. And 3 instances of ShapeMaster always gets my vote haha.
Thanks! I did have some plans for additional parameters to modulate, but ended up deciding that 3 ShapeMaster instances should suffice 😉
Absolutely wonderful! I would love to see where you might be able to go with this!
Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Really nice sound design there, well done.
Thank you Lars!
one of the best VCV songs … !
