Top Down, centre out ❤😊
Great tips, I'm a quiet have to hand stitch the finishes. Garments same.
That’s only if you are symmetrical on both sides
Correct. I do say "especially if they're symmetrical" in the video. 😊
I once went to an interview for big fashion brand in Prague. The boss came to welcome me and shook my hand with a lit up cigarette in the other hand. Very patronising look, no smiles, heavily smelled of cigarettes and generally really bad vibe. I thought that time it was so disrespectful. I turned around and walked away. No regrets.
Thank you! This is so useful! ❤
Glad it was helpful!
The holy grail of tools to use. I like that😅!
I stand by it 😂🤩
Thank you for this series. I've been sewing on a machine (off and on - mostly off) since I was 3 years old and still can't manage zippers or sleeve setting well. I've discovered that I MUCH prefer altering/tailoring clothes to making them from scratch, and the tips you provide are good for that as well as for pattern making
Thank you for such a lovely comment and for sharing your journey. I love that you've found a unique creative process to suit your individuality 🥰
I have done this before and I am quite curvy in front and flatter in the back. Could you show how to use against the pattern. If I cut the space to look like my shape, do I then add that amount back at the side seam?
What are things you might use that measurement for?
Useful for fitting garments with set in sleeves when drafting the back bodice armhole. If you think of garments that feel tight across the back - this is the measurement that will help!
@digitalpatternlibrary Awesome, thanks so much!!🩷
Good idea! I have one of those! Thanks Alex x❤
Thank you for this very helpful tip.
Where is the base of your neck considered? I always use a neck draped around naturally and use that? Would that be correct?
There's chance for wiggle room here as we're always measuring in relation to garments, so consider where you want your neckline to sit. Yes, draping a tape or something flexible around your neck could work - you can also feel for the prominent bone at the back of your neck before circling your finger around to your shoulder as a rough estimation.
@@digitalpatternlibrary thank you that’s very helpful. I’ve also heard the small invention in the front of the neck is where a crew neckline should hit.
Luv it! I am sewing a faux fur coat… I am familiar with bent pins😂
I have a coffee tin graveyard where they all go until it's full and ready to be disposed of 😂 love the sound of the coat!
I agree with you wholeheartedly, though I only make a prototype when the pattern is untested or includes fussy details. Also, naturally, when trying to recreate a garment from its photo. For simple designs I would leave a larger seam allowance, then baste pieces together and try the item on to make necessary adjustments.
(Linda). Hello Alexandra, i have just found your YT channel and I love it. I love this video because i am trying to learn more about fabrics and how-to with them. So, I you intend to go more into a deep dive with fabrics, i will certainly be watching!! thank you, this video is very helpful.💝
You are so welcome! Thank you for such a kind comment and welcome to this little creative corner of the Internet 🥰
Excellent advice for those of us who do not have a Fitting Buddy. AWESOME!!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks ❤
You're welcome 😊
If you care about the planet, cotton is the last fiber you want to use. The amount of pesticides needed is through the roof. Growing cotton uses more water than any other fiber which is a problem because it grows in hot climates where water is scarce. Add to that the CO2 and it's easyly worse than polyester for the environment. Oh, and eco cotton is basically a scam. Sorry...
Hey thanks for raising this for other's to learn and no need to apologise! I'll be sure to expand upon the great points you've made in future content, as sustainability has been a cornerstone of my career - but hopefully this beginner-friendly video sheds light on fabrics so people just getting started don't feel so overwhelmed or judged. Thanks for watching! x

😊 I am pleased to be following you! I'm a novice, I just found you & have just subbed. It's perfect as I've a new-ish unused as of yet, still-in-the-manufacturer's box, sewing machine! I'm grateful, impressed & respect your well thought out content, organization, experience & qualifications! ❤

As a child I had to hand sew my doll clothes for a number of reasons. One is my mother understood the importance of slip stitching, evenly space stitching, etc. Another reason is we were not financially able to purchase a sewing machine. Also, hand sewing quilts and doll clothes allowed us along with my grandmother and aunts to spend time on the porch sharing and loving on each other. Didn't realize it then as I do now how marvelous of them to teach me a priceless and dying art-hand sewing. Now, in my 60th year with impaired vision and many machine made outfits for my children, I enjoy assisting my daughter as she makes clothes for her daughter. Btw... she learned to hand stitch! Thanks for the delightful video.
I think that with all the techniques mentioned, pressing is key. I always press open the French seams after the first run, rather than just roll with my fingers. Thereafter I press the seam closed, turn to trim and sew to enclose. I use pinking shears instead of notching and clipping. For unlined jackets I use a Hong Kong finish. I am not a fan of rolled hems except for sheers and bottoms of shirts. I have various width feet for narrow hems but the learning curve is quite long. If necessary I rather do it by hand, more tedious but nicer result. The bias binding tool is in different finished widths available and for me, easier to use than pressing the binding strips.
Love adding handstitching :)
I do French seam with 1 cm for allowance. Just sew firstly with allowance 0.4 cm and on the wrong side I sew with allowance 0.6 cm. It helps to save time and don't pay too much attention to seam allowances on the cutting step
Ughhh! Thank you so much!!!
Apparently, the Morplan Pattern master that appears in your video is not available to ship to North America
❤
Hi
Yep! I’m the worst at impatience 😂 I wanna see results quick too. I’ll consider…consider hand sewing…. But I love my machines 😂
Madam you are so beautiful and pretty You are what's app number please I learned the pattern making
So nice video and informative video
You pattern making is so nice
What a great tutorial. I am a beginner and it answered my questions about french seam and understitching. Thanks for this 🙏🏼 I always considered myself a minimalist, I never liked gadgets but I do love my bias binding tools. And just now after watching your video I ordered a set of rolled hem foots 🙉
Thanks 😊
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching x
As a beginner I have made lots of notes/samples on how to do various things. The trouble is organising them/remembering what I have. The advantage of books is someone with more knowledge has put things in a sensible order!
Yes I agree with you it doesn't matter where you buy your mannequin no mannequin is going to great you are not going to get American who look like a woman body it doesn't matter if you buy cheap or expensive every mannequin or the same you must make it work the easy way for you no mannequin is real body mine is almost the same like yours 👌🌹🌹
Kalekamba ❤❤❤❤❤, naona nikikula maembe for free 😂 anyiny tieni
Just subscribed, my goal is to learn drafting this year. Thank you🪡🧵
a big welcome! Thanks for choosing me to be part of your journey, I look forward to hearing all the creative updates!
Soooo the apex to apex should be when you wear your best bra, correct? Otherwise I will be measuring down by my belly button. LOLOL
This made me chuckle! Apex to apex is the fullest part of the bust which is often across the nipple, but not always! But yes 😂 when you're wearing your favourite or best bra, we always draft garments with end wear in mind. Thanks for watching and hope that helps! X
Great technique!
Simple but effective!
Great technique!
Learned this 60 years ago in Home Science at Camp Hill High School. Brisbane. Australia. This is not at ....new technique. But valuable.
I don't think I claimed this to be a new technique? But it is valuable and lesser known for beginners and hobby sewists. Thanks for watching x
Great tips. I was chuckling about your Uni book of samples. I also keep those and my samples from draping class. They have become quite handy. I got out of the habit of keeping my samples so this is a perfect tip for me to start up again.
I love that it's given you the nudge to continue your sample practice. I think we tend to ebb and flow the more experienced we get, but there's always techniques and experimentation of new ideas to explore - let me know how you get on and thanks for watching! x
@@digitalpatternlibrary thank you, absolutely. You are so talented. I was only able to get 2 years of fashion draping and flat pattern when the company I worked changed my hours and I couldn’t attend school anymore. So I soak up your knowledge
Oh kl thank you 😁
My sewing space is the dining room!
What a great idea. You would need a lot of plastic wrap if doing a pair of pants.
Not necessarily depending on the shape of the leg. If I was copying pants using this method I would focus mainly on the crotch curve, waist and hip before simply measuring the inseam, thigh, knee and leg opening to plot free hand. Whilst this is a useful beginner-friendly hack, I'd always advise keeping plastic use to a minimum where possible! Hopefully that helps and thanks for watching x
@@digitalpatternlibrary yes thank you
A clearly delivered and informative video that answers the majority of questions that arise when confronting a simple mannequin. Thank you.
A really kind comment, thank you for your support 🙏 🧡
This is such a good way of learning how to draw 😊
Thank you so much! x
