You know what? I think this could've been good actually. Maybe a few more drafts, and some more logical reasons for the characters to do shitty things, but be able to explain themselves and sort it out. Like I don't know. A story about a girl who's family is all keeping secrets, and she feels responsible for them until its too much and she just tells everyone, and in doing so discovers that things were both more complicated and not as bad as she thought they were, because communication = good. But like you'd have to pull out the incest and like think things through a little harder first

This was honestly a fun romp, but it should not have been related to the lion king at all. All the roles have been reversed, it’s not even set in Africa, Simba/Simon has really no plot relevance, and it feels like it should’ve been set in like, the dark ages instead of 1910.

I read this book because the way you described it in the beginning sounded right up my alley and I’m so glad I did lol clunky writing aside it was such a silly fun time?? Orpheus is just a big sad boy and I spent the whole time just wanting him to be happy. And I just eat up the whole “I don’t understand humans” thing (tis the ‘tism in me). For me if a book is kinda shallow in every aspect but has a bunch of deep sounding quotable phrases sprinkled in it's normally a turn off lol It always feels like the author only wanted to think of effect phrases and not how to make the story, like, _good_ and is used to selling a book that doesn't have this consistency (bc most of the times I've encountered this the writing was bad or mediocre 90% of the time until there's a Deep™ phrase that feel like the author was thinking "this one is for people to mark down") Also you were right putting an eyeliner, it made the eyeshadow pop more.

You made me realize that I like a complex male romantic leads that are actually kind, and that is why I am drawn to dark romances but keep getting disappointed. Honestly this one is more tolerable bc at least it’s contained. In the other books those people are out in the world doing god knows what to the innocent public, but at least this one you can kinda just write it off as one freak family doing freak shit between themselves 🤣

Colleen Hoover has a really weird thing about women with brain injuries. In three books (that i know of, i haven't read them all), but in Verity, Layla, and Without Merit, there are women with brain injuries that completely change their personalities and that change somehow justifies their significant others treating them like shit and cheating on them? Weird ass ableist pattern I've noticed on top of everything else wrong with her writing lol

Don’t try to convince me that something is too big-brained for me to understand before I even start to read it. I got the same vibe from Don’t Blink with the disclaimer at the beginning telling us that the movie was ‘making a statement’ or whatever. I have to say in defense of 500 Days of Summer- she’s not actually a manic pixie-dream girl, the whole movie is actually a critique of that trope. They can’t be together because he never listens when she tells him what she wants and doesn’t want, and he sees her as a manic pixie dream girl and not a human with flaws. He puts her on a quirky girl pedestal instead of seeing her how she is. Love your review by the way! This was not intended to be snarky or anything

So the part where Uncle Luck is about to sleep with Merit, and stops because Merit looks like Moby. I'm wondering if this is one of those things where CoHo started a plotline and never developed it. Maybe in an initial draft the twins were Vikki's biological kids, and Luck was catching onto this detail at the last minute.

Simon was probably supposed to be a call back to simba, but like this book is so far gone and whitewashed, it flew over peoples heads

Ok, hear me out. I don't _hate_ this book. I have very similar feelings about Verity. The twists and turns of the plot are over the top, but if it was presented as a dark mystery leaning towards horror and went through a vigorous editing process, it would be amazing. So the general idea of the plot has so much potential. It's the execution that's lacking.

I'm not even bothering picturing the characters as humans, just as they looked in The Lion King. It makes this mess 1000% funnier

I think the Ophelia throwing herself off a bridge thing is a reference to the actual Hamlet text where she drowns and it's ambiguous whether it was an accident or on purpose. But also, yikes!
