Steven Snowden: Appalachian Polaroids • Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra
Просмотров 17814 дней назад
Program notes from Steven Snowden: Appalachian Polaroids was initially inspired by the controversial portrait photography of Shelby Lee Adams (b. 1950). Though sometimes criticized for perpetuating the hillbilly stereotype of rural Appalachia, I feel that his photographs often illuminate the quiet resilience of these remote mountain communities. As a native of the Ozark Mountain countryside, I ...

Просмотров 152Месяц назад
Program notes from Valerie Coleman: Danza de la Mariposa is a rhythmic, melodic tone poem, giving the listener a tour of South America. Inspired by the various species of butterflies inhabiting the continent, this work is full of rich color, with butterflies dancing and weaving in syncopated rhythms while alternating between the feel of 3 over 4 throughout. Its slower sections pay homage to the...

Program notes from Eric Nathan: "Omaggio a Gesualdo" (2013) is inspired by Gesualdo's madrigal "Ahi, disperata vita" from Madrigali a cinque voci Libro terzo (1594). It uses Gesualdo's work as a model, recasting his gestures and musical motives in my own language, while loosely adhering to the form of his work. Program notes from Jennifer Higdon: Can music reflect colors and can colors be reflected in music? I have always been fascinated with the connection between painting and music. Delightful. Such joy. Wonderfully charming music-making. Let's face it, the flute playing especially stands out (for those who particularly love wind instruments like oneself). But all of the musicians are first-class, and they play together so seamlessly.... Bravo!!!

Whatever this is trying to be, it is 50 years too late. I remember witnessing this sort of tripe when I was a student and I am now 75. Much well crafted and daring music is to be had but Ms Smith might want to consider a different field of employment.

Wow. This work is the most refreshingly intelligent, curiously lyrical, quixotically riveting new art I have encountered since I heard Khachaturian's Piano Concerto, with a theremin in the second movement, in 1973. No kidding! In its retention of tonal expectations by new means, it reminds me of "Albion" by Thomas Ades.

Don't we all need some syncopated harp and percussive instruments in our lives? 😃 For all you music majors, is there a name for this? Jazz percussion or percussive jazz? . . . In any case, it is refreshing. Instead of the focus being on pretty, melodic voices, the focus is on a variety of unique sounds with syncopated, unusual tempos. . . . Have you ever heard recordings or seen video of the deep jungle or rainforest? This video reminds me of that. There are all kinds of unique, interesting sounds and we are uncertain as to what is making them. The brain tries to sort out the sounds. Is there a rattle of a snake, growl of a tiger, a cascade of water, buzz of an insect, roar of a lion? . . . So there is that. Plus, for a period of time, it sounded like a conversation between two or more beings or creatures or aliens. I can't speak for anyone else, but I can for myself: it's good! I like it. 👏👏👏👏
