Fighter Group: The 352nd “Blue-Nosed Bastards” in World War II
I wonder if the All Wood configuration for types in the ASW role was intentional to lower the aircraft's RADAR signature? While the use of a non-stretegic material is great for anyone's War Effort. They knew our Gato and Balao class boats had sophisticated radar. A sub hunter with a much smaller blip can get closer to his target... Did the K11W ever get a McCoy code name?
No it did not get a code name. I believe the wood construction was a scarcity of resources issue - aluminum - as opposed to any other consideration. However, your point is well taken on the reduction in signature.
@@PalmSpringsAirMuseum I was thinking along the line the Mine Sweepers were usually wooden hulled to defeat magnetic mines. But it's true, at that point in the War, Japan hardly had any resources at all. Anything of manufacturing significance was promptly bombed out of existance. I've heard the reason for the Fire Bombing was that much manufacture of war items was being farmed out to in-home cottage industries.
Of course Japan was a maritime force....they are an island nation! So I am going off topic here; but one needs to understand to vitriol between the Japanese Navy and the Japanese Army. If you take fighter aircraft alone (which is why I'm off topic) the fighters built for the IJA far exceeded the IJN by at least 3,000 units. Yes, their carrier fleets were heavily dependant upon. But their failures between the IJN and IJA to have a integral force and their lack of resources is much more important than losing at Midway. Point being is that the IJA was a formidable force and if they coordinated better, our "island hopping" campaigns would have been much worse for the multiple Allies involved.
Thank for the comments. I think the point was IJN doctrine drove their overall fighter design - to its detriment. Secondly, you seem to be well versed in this topic - not all of our viewers are so we tend to try and give a little more context.
Father flew this as a navigator. Pretty sweet to think about.
Apparently Canada just bought some.
They got the Skyfox!
USS The Sullivans DD 537 (Fletcher Class, 1943) Currently a museum ship of the Heritage Museum in Buffalo, NY.
USS The Sullivan's DD537 (Fletcher Class)
Had Republic worked out the titanium fabrication issues and had the engine for this airplane not been stillborn the Thunderwarrior would have been a formidable airplane! Sadly, the timeframe in which this aircraft was being developed was when military aircraft had just gone supersonic and many other technological issues had just not caught up yet.
Great story - thanks for your service!!
USS The Sullivan's. How do I know. I been to your museum every year (minus 2020 and 2021) since I was 2. Love the ship model section and love you guys as well.
Sullivan's. Ship name. Class of ship is KIDD. 😊❤️
USS KIDD class. 1945 model. How I know is I'm a military historian buff. I know my planes, tanks, ships , heroes and villians

I was an Aerial Combat Documentary Photographer in the USAF 1965/68. I flew on lots of different Air Force Planes ! The thing that I remember most about flying on the C-123 was the fact that they gave us a Parachute when we flew on them ! SORRY... I was mistaken about that Parachute claim ... That was on the C-119 Flying Boxcars !
These memories are priceless and only 10 of these big bombers exist now.
I kinda liked the C-141 Starlifter ! I did a Performance Demonstration (I was an Aerial Combat Documentary Photographer) when they were introduced to March AFB in 1966 or so.
I have always admired the Beech 18 & its variants.
The most famous Beach 18 was the one used in the movie: "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World". The 18 was actually flown through a billboard (especally prepared for the stunt), through an open hanger and into a restaurant window; by movie stunt pilot Paul Mantz. No CGI here either!! A great scale ready-to-fly RC version of the 18 is available at hobby shops.
Is Darkstar still at this Museum ?
yes with more viewing opportunities in the fall
@@PalmSpringsAirMuseumAny dates ?
Nah we do in Ohio buddy
What a shit docko
The 11th hour change to the B-2's design was disastrous. The change was made because some Pentagon higher-up lost the courage of his conviction that stealth works. The change came not from new findings or empirical data but simply from anxiety rooted in a sentiment along the lines of "Stealth works as far as we can tell but what if we're wrong... If we're wrong, many of our stealth bombers could get shot down leaving us with dead pilots and few bombers. I don't want to be blamed for that." The change was disastrous because it transformed what then seemed to be a chance of ending up with too few bombers into what is known now as a certainty of ending up with too few bombers. The change made the B-2 so expensive that we ended up buying only 20, which became 19 after an accident. The cost, in today's dollars, increased to $4 billion per B-2! The change also increased the B-2's maintenance costs, delayed its debut, and made it less stealthy. We ended up paying much more for much less in quantity and somewhat less in quality. If the root of the problem is that higher-ups in the Pentagon are overly risk averse, then we should balance out that excessive risk aversion with (A) sticks that make risk aversion itself risky and (B) carrots that reward bold but rational gambles especially when they pay off. The idea is to avoid asymmetry in consequences, which skews behavior away from optimal. Was there any tangible negative consequence for whoever decided to make the change to the B-2? I don't know but I doubt it. If instead that person hadn't lost his faith in stealth and therefore hadn't changed the B-2, do you he would've faced tangible negative consequences if it later turned out that stealth didn't work well? I don't know but I suspect he would have. Asymmetrical.
The Tiger Moth had to be flown constantly, there was no "centralise the stick and forget it" it was this that made "real pilots" having mastered the Moth, aircrew would then be sent on to Canada to learn advanced flying in the Texan before being allowed to fly the Spitfire. An advantage the moth had, was that in event of a prang, the wings were made to shear off, thus redusing the possibility of a fire.
I was a AME in R.V.A.H.3 in Key west and worked on these. To egress you clipped your parachute laynard as the hatch blew open and locked! then you slid out! IF YOU COULD! Would like to see something on the RA5C Vigi. Thanks1
I can't remember which airplane had a "reverse pitch" that allowed the plane to land on short strips and could actually back the plane up.
I have seen the C-130 backup under its own power. U-tapao RTAFB Thailand 1967/68

Nobody cares about your random soft drink you bought from Meijer. Of course your sugar-veins probably thought it was bad! If it doesn't have at least 46grams it isn't an american soft drink. Write a script and let Greg read it next time.

Back in June ‘24 we were in Palm Springs and included the Air Museum as entertainment. It was fantastic! Excellent displays as well as a guided tour inside a B-17. I came home with several souvenirs👍
