These are short videos of my Woodpont Beagles, hunting cottontail rabbits in southeastern Ohio, USA. I started this strain of beagles in the late 1970s, beginning with Little Ireland lines, later crossing onto Showfield, Valar and New City. I have always bred for good conformation along with field ability. Gradually the family color has become black and tan. Early March hunting. Had two nice runs on this day - this is part of the second chase. 13 hounds out - 5 in their first season and 1 unstarted puppy. 13 hounds out: 7 males: Billygoat, Rooster, Timothy, Striver, Roamer, Roper, Bighorn. 6 females: Storm, Birdwing, Matchless, Biddy, Stormcloud, Ballad. Thank you. Glad you like them. I try to breed for 14-15 inch hounds, but still get a lot of females around 13 inches. I don’t mind the size differences as long as they all run the same speed. I don’t want them strung out across the countryside when running.

outside of a bad scenting day or the rabbit holes up how a rabbit be able to escape a pack that big ?
They escape in lots of ways. We don’t catch too many. Mostly they go into holes. Sometimes they switch onto a fresh rabbit. Other times the rabbit is just lost, particularly if they run in a very small area putting down so much scent (rabbit and all the hounds) that maintaining the scent track becomes impossible. Most of the time the rabbit has the upper hand, but sometimes not!

Thank you. It takes years to develop a pack, especially if you raise all your hounds from puppies. But the results can be very rewarding. I have a lot of fun with these hounds.

Do you ever run a separate smaller packs?
No, always run 12-18 or so depending on what hounds are available. I enjoy the challenge of working with a larger pack.
