Taking on Three Shires Head: Pushing the KTM 790 Adventure to Its Limits in the Peak District!

I set out to tackle one of the most iconic and challenging off-road routes in the Peak District: Three Shires Head. This rocky, technical trail is a true test piece for adventure riders, and it definitely pushed my KTM 790 Adventure harder than any other route I’ve tried in the area! Unfortunately, my battery cut out early in the ride, so I wasn’t able to capture the full experience. But I’ll w...

    you have some valid points but customers and public pushed KTM to comment and all they did was deny untill MCN backed them in to a corner well done to them, then they came out with some half arsed good faith questionable help and dubious statistics they seemed to have learned very little, next the 2 head honcho commedians no apology to those with riding dreams spoiled as their bikes languish in dealers waiting for parts or warranty response and zero humility one even tried to say reliability was a watchword even if the guy believes it himself surely a media person would have stopped him. dont get me wrong as an owner past and present I want them to succeed but oh boy they really seem to want to do everything in a way doomed to failure. in the long run hard to see how they can compete other than in niche segments the Chinese are going to demolish them they wont be alone.

      Thanks, and on some level I do of course see that point of view. I do think this aspect can be talked about as if it's every second customer affected, and it's not, nowhere close. The initial cam related problems were not a straightforward thing from an engineering standpoint (and generally, no one source can fully identify the problem even now), and even people who stretched their cover by operating on their bike out of warranty still got a retrospective claim etc. There's definitely problems in how you address this kind of thing at scale, but it's not a total fail on KTMs part either. I've found claiming warranty items to be a straightforward and transparent thing, for what it's worth.

    Thanks for the video. I’m in the same boat as you are. I really like the 790 and will continue to maintain it appropriately and keep enjoying it. My sixth KTM product since 2004. Not going to get caught up in the chaos going on with KTM at the moment, we will have to wait and see what the outcome looks like and go on from there. KTM has created their own problems over the course of time and are now going to be held accountable. They have made some great motorcycles but certainly pissed off a bunch of customers and potential customers in the process. Most of us know what the problems have been and I’m sure there is a few we are not aware of. Ego is not your Amigo! Wish you a Merry Christmas from Canada, all the best.

      Thanks for the support! Yeah, still stock, although I am planning to go down a tooth in the front when I change my chain next for the same reason. I don't stall the bike very much, but it does require a fair bit of clutch slip and consciously keeping the revs up. I hear the older 790 is a bit more stall happy than this one.

    Early on when you were standing in attack position with your hands loose you can see how well you were doing . standing up / sitting down is an interesting one...I think on that second half, I was getting better traction by being in a sitting position (it was loose rock underneath), even if I was sacrificing balance to do it...with 60/40 tires, standing up, it can be difficult to keep the back tire hooked up on loose uphills.

    How do find the 790’s weight under more arduous conditions particularly when going at that sort of slower pace? - always find it surprising just how hard you have to work when concentrating and trying to keep the bike balanced and on the best track.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 2 месяца назад

      pretty good all things considered! I think where I find I notice the weight more is downhill. When you brake you're transferring quite a lot of weight to the front, so you have to commit more to avoid braking or slowing down basically! Other than that I love the power it delivers going from slow to pushing the bike forward without too much dramas...I can go almost stationary, compose myself, and then drive into an obstacle, which makes it a very controlled bike...people sometimes complain about this bike being a bit stall happy but I haven't experienced that, it's very forgiving, maybe more an issue on the older version.

  • @RichardS-qh8mi
    @RichardS-qh8mi 2 месяца назад

    The other thing is it’s not about how fast you traverse the ground it’s about enjoying the moment and journey itself. Standing or sitting on the bike as the ground beneath you dictates or spinning the back wheel when it’s easy and safe to do so like on softer ground or sand.

    So many others with mid to big cc adv bikes have found out that such bikes are no comparison to the smaller cc bikes offroad. My friend traded in his 790 & got a Himalayan because of this & now we can't keep up with him offroad, plus he's getting 90mpg. I'm thinking of doing the same.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 2 месяца назад

      The one thing I do like about it is the extra drive it has, combined with a long second gear. I rode quite a few of the 350-400 group, and I always found them harder work in finding the right gear at the right time. The 790 in second will basically climb anything off-road. With picking the bike up, I only really struggled once, but I'm not sure a Himalayan would have been any easier...they're basically the same weight!

    Great video and some good tips. I always try and keep up a bit of speed, maybe jogging pace, to keep me moving straight. Also, revs help keep the bike upright, so don't be afraid to slip that clutch, it also helps to cut and add power quickly and smoothly when you get to dips/bumps/rocks in the way.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 2 месяца назад

      Absolutely, I've got a lot better at keeping revs high in the last year. Also agree on momentum for making most things easier, although I've come to appreciate balance in recent times. It's surprising how slow you can go while keeping control when the balance is there.

  • @MattKritzstein
    @MattKritzstein 2 месяца назад

    If I can offer one tip, as a fellow relatively armature rider...look as far ahead as possible. It will help you feel more comfortable standing as well, and help in keeping your momentum up as you let the bike move below you in ruts, rocks, sand or whatever. You will see the obstacles sooner, fight the bike less, and therefore be more prepared and make better decision. It is probably one of the most useful tips I was ever given and when practiced regularly it will become second nature and vastly improve your other skills. I literally tell myself at times 'look up, look up' over and over :)

  • @mattzobian

    A long, deep rutted road can be very frustrating. If it has stones that knock the tires around, which is the worst situation, best thing is to go slow, stay seated, dab with your feet, and try to maintain a steady throttle.

    Right idea mate, enjoy the bike, they are so much fun. Twist and go personified. Cam issue is not great advertisement at all, real customers with real problem. Sounds like a 'potential' oil pressure issue feeding oil to the cam, the story changes as time moves on. A fraction of actual sales affected but still a fraction. Simple solution, don't be shy to give it beans at high rpm when you can. That's how they were tested and survived.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 2 месяца назад

      Using the right oil probably matters too, a cheaper quality oil change (which a dealer might do too) could make a difference. But yes, definitely not trying to denigrate anyone's who's had this specific problem, that sucks. That said, it's a bit frustrating, as an owner, that a fraction effected has knocked a lot of value off my bike. I blame the community more than the brand for that one, although it's a fine line for accountability.

    • @nomading_in

      The R would be the 2019 to 2022 version, which happens to be the one that has the cam issues cited more recently, so maybe best to be avoided? It isn't going to happen on every unit produced, but still. Interestingly there is a new 790R produced in the China market only, so chances are that might come to other markets in the future. I'd say if you go down a sprocket in the front, and change the tires (only about £250) you'll have a very competent off-road bike without doing anything that'll impact warranty etc. Depending on the dealer you might even be able to negotiate these as part of the sale.

    I rented 990 duke for one day. It had total 3k km on it. While i was riding i wanted to change gear and my foot went almost to the ground and i automatically pulled on the throttle as you would after changing gear. It turned out the lever from a gear shifter just flew off. To say that it was not a "nice" feeling when your foot goes just goes down when it supposed to be stopped by something along the way is an understatement. I had the greatest time with this ktm was really surprised but if something so trivial happens on basically a new bike i mean what to expect while you own one for longer.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 5 месяцев назад

      Yep, seems a fairly common story. Seems like some leave the factory without proper quality control, and things come loose over time,which shouldn't happen really. I consider myself healthy paranoid with mine, checking it over for anything obvious starting to go wrong.

      @nomading_in 5 месяцев назад

      haha yep! I was kind of surprised it made that much of a difference, but it's difficult for the general owner of this bike...all suspension upgrades even just springs are relatively expensive. As I said in the video it's not an essential upgrade by any means...but still!

    This model is not available to us yet. Did the dealers say the cam, brakes, leaks, cold start etc issues are fixed?

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 5 месяцев назад

      don't think anyone will be 100% certain on that one, but my personal bet is that yes, this is very much a V2 of the original model, and they knew what needed fixing coming into the project. I hear echoes on them basically admitting the cam issue is basically known for certain older models, which they probably fixed in 2022. Probably the only one I can speak to with 5+k on the clock is that mine starts every time, no delays, no workarounds, and I haven't noted any issues with brakes or leaks, apart from a little bit of coolant loss which I've since fixed myself.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks a mill for the sympathy! I actually struggled more than the video shows in the interests of the edit...I almost couldn't get it lifted after the drop, and took my last reserve of strength to finally get it upright after the 4th or 5th attempt. Could have been worse though, at least I only dropped it once and that wasn't even while I was riding it! After the fact the bike only had a few tank scrapes so not too bad on that front either. In hindsight I think maybe I should have reset sooner and got it turned lower down to focus on having a clean run, although that gate being where it was really threw me. As I heard Chris Birch say at an event recently, you have to really visualise yourself at the top, otherwise just don't do it, which is what I opted for in the end.

    Didn't watch the whole video, but it seemed you were going too slow over the rock sections. If you have no momentum, you are stuffed on that kind of terrain. It's best to bounce over it.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 6 месяцев назад

      Yep for sure, although each time I got going on this specific section the suspension felt like it was getting a bit overwhelmed and starting to lose traction from skipping or coming back down awkwardly on the bigger rocks. I also should have at least tried rally mode to back off the traction control a little as that was interfering a little at times. Good experience though, I reckon if I tackled it again tomorrow I'd give it a decent run.
