Protecting Urban Forested Natural Areas: Making the Case for Conservation
Urban forested natural areas provide numerous ecosystem services and places for urban residents to recreate, interact with nature, and seek respite from the hustle of urban life. Despite these benefits, forests are often cleared and the consequences are severe. In this webinar you will learn more about the benefits of urban forested natural areas, the threats they face, and what you can do to help conserve these spaces.

Floodlights and Fireflies: Environmental sustainability starts in your front yard
Просмотров 165Месяц назад
Insect populations around the world are declining rapidly. But why? While habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change all have something to do with it, Dr. Avalon Owens shows in this talk that light pollution is another important - but too often overlooked - bringer of the insect apocalypse. Light pollution interferes with the development, movement, foraging, courtship, and reproduction of ...
Fall Color and Seed Dispersal - How do they do that?
Просмотров 110Месяц назад
In New England, we prize our trees’ fall color - the reds, yellows, oranges and purples. And starting in August, we notice how seedy our native plants become - falling nuts dent our cars and burrs make grooming pets a challenge. But how and why do they do what they do? In this webinar, Barbara Bates explores the mechanisms of fall color and seed dispersal timing and strategies. Barbara is a tea...

Why We Should Remove the Watertown Dam
Просмотров 138Год назад
Did you know, each spring, thousands of migratory fish return to the Charles river to spawn in the lakes, ponds, and tributaries? Across Massachusetts, there is a growing movement to remove aging, defunct mill dams and restore free-flowing, climate-resilient rivers. There are numerous benefits and considerations to dam removal, including reinstating migratory fish passage, restoring the ecosyst...
Talking Turkey: Why are there so many Turkeys?
Просмотров 100Год назад
The native turkeys we currently see in such abundance were extirpated from Massachusetts not so long ago. Their revival is a true success story, unless you’ve tangled with an aggressive one. Newton Conservator’s Barbara Bates explores the habits and natural & cultural history of this interesting bird, including “pecking order” and how it survives so well in our cities. For more than 16 years, B...
Springers and Singers: The Art and Science of Observing Orthoptera
Просмотров 184Год назад
Widespread, plentiful, and in some cases really loud, Orthoptera (grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids) get surprisingly little attention from naturalists. But these insects are everywhere, if often extremely well camouflaged, and anyone can learn to find them and ID them by sight or sound. In this webinar, Matt Pelikan introduces the basics of Orthoptera biology and ecology, discuss their dive...
Gardening for Habitat: Building a Biodiverse Yard
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Год назад
Gardens are habitats, but the degree to which they support local wildlife depends on how we plant and manage them. Our plant choices determine who visits, stays, or passes by as creatures look for food, shelter, to nest and lay eggs. When and how we decide to clean up leaves or cut plants back affects life cycles of salamanders, bees, birds, moths, and butterflies. Emily Baisden will explain ho...
How Small Mammal Personalities May Shape Forests Under Changing Climates
Просмотров 240Год назад
Plant species are expected to respond to warming temperatures and changes in precipitation in the face of climate change by shifting ranges to higher latitudes and elevations. Oaks are one such species, but unlike wind-dispersed species, will depend upon animals (such as squirrels, mice, and voles) to disperse their large seeds into their new habitable range. Many factors can influence this pla...
Rewilding our Communities for Climate Resistance

What holds some 500 species, sequesters 500 pounds of CO2/year, is 10°F cooler than its surroundings, soaks up lots of rainwater, and is created by children and their elders in spaces no bigger than a tennis court? A “mini-forest” planted using the Miyawaki Method, of course! After a couple of years of as-needed weeding and watering, these nascent forests form a canopy and - like any other heal...
Planting for Pollinators
Просмотров 222Год назад
Without the work of pollinators, we would not have food to eat. However, pollinator populations are decreasing at an alarming rate. Why? Partly due to climate change and the use of herbicides and largely due to vanishing habitat. Together, we can help to save the pollinators by preserving large tracts of habitat, but each of us also can do important work on a smaller scale-in our own yards and ...

~ CHILDREN & PESTICIDES ! ~ ~ HOW CAN ANYONE ALLOW PESTICIDE-HATING FANATЖCS NEAR CHILDREN ?!?! ~ On the issue of children & pesticides. Pesticide-hating fanatжcs are WRONG !!! There is NO emerging science. There is NO health risk. There is NO laundry list of pesticides. There are NO REAL incidents near schools. There are NO children who are vulnerable. There are NO children at risk from pesticides. ~ However. On the issue of children & pesticides. Pesticide-hating fanatжcs will conveniently IGNORE the following PESTICIDE TRUTHS !!! - See below. ~ There IS a laundry list of threats of harm to children - a list that does not include pesticides. ~ There ARE children who will be HARMED by developmental disfunction & psychological abuse by those pesticide-hating fanatжcs that may include parents & relatives. ~ There are children who will be HARMED by exposure to the paranoia, the mindless hate-speech, & the subversive-conspiracies perpetrated by pesticide-hating fanatжcal-loved-ones. ~ There are children who will be HARMED by these fanatжcs. ~ Clearly, there WILL BE children who will be HARMED by exposure to mindless hate-speech & psychological abuse. ~ Ultimately, there WILL BE children who will be HARMED because of adults present in their lives who are pesticide-hating fanatжcal-extremists. ~ There WILL BE children who will be HARMED by the twisted-paranoia & the subversive-conspiracies of their fanatжcal-parents. ~ Sadly, someday, there WILL BE children who will be HARMED sufficiently to become just like the fanatжcal-adults whose mindless hate-speech has showed them how to hate & despise pesticides. ~ When the children become adults, they WILL serve absolutely NO useful purpose to society, just like their pathetic fanatжcal-parents. ~ If fanatжcal-parents truly care about their children, they will CEASE & DESIST all of their mindless hate-speech & valueless paranoid-conspiracies - for the sake of their children ! ~ How can anyone allow pesticide-hating fanatжcs near children ?!?! ~ ~ CHILDREN ARE EXPLOITED AS WEAPONS ULTIMATE TERRЖR ! ~ In public anti-pesticide forums, young fanatжcal-mothers are easily identifiable because they like publicly dressing in spandex, & are often paid-for-profit to disrupt the proceedings by making their young children or babies cry. ~ Crying & bawling is often not difficult since many of these kids are often abused by starvation with inferior organic food. ~ Fanatжcal-parents will further abuse their kids by making them fearful & anxious about modern chemicals that are known to be safe & effective. ~ These fanatжcs may also despicably lead their children to believe that if a loved one, or a family pet, passes on, then it is because of exposure to pesticides. [ ?!?! ] ~ Furthermore, children may be diagnosed with exotic & unlikely diseases & disorders, like ADHD [ ?!?! ], that have nothing to do with pesticides. ~ These fanatжcs could not care less about their children. ~ Sadly, pesticide-hating fanatжcal-parents prefer to despicably & outrageously exploit & abuse their children as dramatic weapons of coercion & ultimate environmental-terrжr in order to disseminate their mindless hate-speech. ~ How can anyone allow pesticide-hating fanatжcs near children ?!?! ~ ~ CHILDREN ARE NOT AT RISK BECAUSE OF RISK ASSESSMENTS ! ~ No one needs to worry about children, & even pets, playing on pesticide-treated grass. ~ This is because all pest control products are federally-approved, scientifically-safe, practically-non-toxic, & will cause no harm, even to children, & even to pets. ~ They represent no-actual-risk-of-harm. ~ It is a myth that children, & pets, are somehow at greater risk from exposure than adults because they play closer to the ground & their bodies are still developing. ~ According to Health Canada & US Environmental Protection Agency ( US EPA ), there are no unacceptable risks for children & pets. ~ The Risk Assessments of pest control products by Health Canada & US EPA DO take children & pets into consideration. ~ These Risk Assessments DO consider children’s & pet’s physiology, behaviours, & habits while playing on treated grass. ~ Typically, for all pest control products needed for professional lawn care maintenance, the government-approved labels state - « KEEP PEOPLE OFF TREATED AREA UNTIL FOLIAGE IS DRY » . ~ The same can be said for the vast majority of pest control products needed to protect golf courses. ~ Overall, pest control products are scientifically-safe & will cause no harm. ~ ~ CHILDREN ARE NOT AT RISK BECAUSE PESTICIDES WILL CAUSE NO HARM ! ~ Children are not at risk from pesticides because these products will not cause harm. The Risk Assessments of pest control products by Health Canada & US Environmental Protection Agency ( US EPA ) take into consideration sensitive groups, such as children, as well as infants & pregnant women. Children are protected by Health Canada & US EPA. ~ Children are not at risk from pesticides, but are at high risk with exposure to mindless hate-speech. According to Dr James S Bus, there is no evidence that pest control products like 2,4-D cause cancer or any health problems in children. ~ Moreover, there is not a scintilla of credible evidence that children have been harmed by chemicals in the environment, or that they are more vulnerable to such harm. However, pesticide-hating fanatжcs exploit, recruit, coerce, & brain-wash children with false-alarms of imminent harm from chemicals like pest control products. Mindless hate-speech have been taught to kids in school & propaganda packages have been sent directly to them. ~ In addition, Canadian Cancer Society’s web-sites state repeatedly that scientific research does not provide a conclusive link between pest control products & cancer. There is not one known cancer death from the proper use of pest control products that are needed to protect the urban landscape. ~ Nonetheless, given that cancer is the number 2 leading cause of death, there is a good chance that you are going to die of cancer no matter what you do. By contrast, pest control products are nowhere near a leading cause of cancer-death, & there is no chance that they will make you die of cancer. Pesticides causing cancer is a myth. So chill-out & have a drink, & forget about mindless hate-speech against pest control products. ~ How can anyone allow pesticide-hating fanatжcs near children ?!?! ~ ~ pesticidetruths.com/ WILLIAM H GATHERCOLE & NORAH G ~ ~ ~ EXPLORE THE FOLLOWING MEDIA LIBRARY - ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- Pesticide Safety Infographics -- Health Canada -- Post ⁄ Report -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/2020/02/24/health-canadas-pesticide-safety-infographics-the-safety-of-pest-control-products-2020-2019/ ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- Kids Are At High Risk With Pesticide Bans -- Post ⁄ Report -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/2019/08/07/pesticides-children-kids-are-at-high-risk-with-pesticide-bans-2019-08-07/ ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- Children Are Safe On A Pesticide-Treated Lawn -- Dr Katherine Von Stackelberg -- Post ⁄ Report -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/2013/02/28/24-d-herbicide-highly-implausible-carcinogenic-outcomes-with-24-d-the-von-stackelberg-study-2012-02-01/ ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- Children Are Not More Sensitive To Chemicals -- Post ⁄ Report -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/2018/11/18/children-are-not-at-risk-from-pesticides-children-are-not-more-sensitive-vulnerable-to-chemicals-in-the-environment-juris-dr-steven-j-milloy-speaks-the-truth-2018-10-03/ ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- Children Are Safe With 2,4-D -- No Evidence That 2,4-D Causes Cancer Or Any Health Problems In Children -- Dr James S Bus -- Post ⁄ Report -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/2014/05/08/24-d-is-safe-experts-speaking-out-against-24-d-phobic-terrorism-in-manitoba-no-evidence-that-24-d-causes-cancer-or-any-health-problems-in-children-dr-james-s-bus-24-d-herbicide/ ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- LIBRARY OF POSTS ⁄ REPORTS -- The Complete Media History Of Pesticides & Children -- Kids Are At High Risk With Pesticide Bans -- Dangerous Playing Surfaces Are Created By #@!!% Pesticide Bans -- Exploiting Children As Weapons Of Coercion -- Web-Page -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/toc/children-are-not-at-risk/ ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- POSTER COLLECTION -- Real Trends Against Pesticide Bans -- Victories Against Terrжrists -- Our Children Are Safe When Pesticide Bans Are Stopped -- Post ⁄ Report -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/2012/10/11/posters-there-is-a-real-trend-against-pesticide-bans-victories-against-terrorists-our-children-are-safe-when-pesticide-bans-are-stopped-2012-10-11/ ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- SLIDE PRESENTATION -- Pest Control Products Are Safe For Kids -- Post ⁄ Report -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/2016/08/30/a-look-at-safety-environment-facts-pest-control-products-are-safe-for-kids-slide-show-2016-08-31/ ~ ~ √ -- CHILDREN -- PESTICIDES -- 2,4-D Is Safe For Kids -- EPA’s Mr William Jordan -- Post ⁄ PTruths Report -- LINK ~ pesticidetruths.com/2014/08/21/surprise-epa-says-24-d-safe-for-kids-william-jordan-deputy-director/ ~ ~

Stop talking , sediment is good for the estuary . See ELWA : #DamsOut 😊
So much to digest, and so many new concepts to consider. It was a wonderful presentation and you could really feel her passion for the research lol It'll be interesting as well to see how the displacement of habitable zones as a result of climate change causes the movement of species that may not typically exhibit migratory patterns. How will these sorts of creatures attempt migration? Or will they at all?
wonderful to see and hear this presentation. deeply appreciate the land acknowledgment
Great presentation by Emily Baiden! I've been working for several years restoring a small house lot. I especially liked her chill perspective on some of the invasive / exotics that we battle. Thank you for hosting & sharing.

Thank you for a very informative session.
Don't be so hateful. These are just plants and will eventually settle into the ecoregion.
This is like the great America interchange, New species moving in and reordering the ecosystem. Stop being so hateful, these are just fellow organisms on this planet. Blaming early successional species for coming up in disturbed areas, any place around our buildings and roads, is dumb. Woodland specialist natives are not going to take their place. Also our ecosystem has been impaired for millenia. Not only has it suffered the impact of European colonization most of the mega fauna has been lost. This ecosystem once had mammoth, mastodons, ground sloths, bison, Harlan's musk ox, horses, peccaries, elk and beaver the size of bears. Then there were the big and toothy things that kept the herbivores bunched and moving. Overly exuberant vegetation would get pruned severely in this regime. Also Round Up looks to be a carcinogen and should be shelved.
A jewel in the urban mix to be preserved at all cost. Gorgeous photography.
From a completely independent perspective, these photos are great! They illustrate what a splendid resource the Webster Woods are to the residents of the region. We should do all we can to encourage BC to be a positive force for our City and the larger community by preserving as much of the natural landscape as possible.
Beautiful photography and beautiful nature sanctuary in the midst of suburban sprawl. We must protect nature and natural places for people to enjoy and benefit by better health from exercise, fresh air, and peaceful open space!
