I have a Fostex 80 that I love but I just cannot get it to record a signal, anybody have this problem? I arm the tracks and do the input selector as shown, but it just won't take a signal.

Some digital systems do not stream the data to disk/tape in real time, so there is a delay after hitting stop while waiting for everything to be flushed to disk/tape. Does this machine also have this same drawback?

I found one of those machines in a pawn shop a few months ago but it was sold. I would have bought it as I have a Fostex 4 Track. The quality is poor compared to digital which I’ve been using since 2000 but recording to tape has a magic that’s long gone.

hi beware i have a working deck note the main head has heavy wear i had to take it of and put on a 4 track heads as play back only note i payed very low money for the deck £20 a very long long time ago came from a studio in london it looks the part i know there's decks out there that are not running i picked up alot of betacam sp decks not running will be soon

Hi Landon, who do you get to service the 688 in North America? I have one that I replaced the capstan variable speed motor and belt. It runs faster than the speed it should, when testing tapes that are recorded on my other 688 unit. I also have the cables and box to sync after applying the time code. Is there still service center to have repairs?

I tried to make a vinyl release with my band Insomnia's Girl. One thing I found out is that it is much easier to do a CD release. To do a CD release, I just bought the raw materials and since I already had a printer, I just printed off the things I needed and then I was golden! Also if you would want to do a CD release, it would be really cool to do one for you! I would be very willing to do small quantities.

Oh by the way my name is Emjay. I use quite a bit of out board gear including a Roland VS 2480, several drum machines, samplers, keyboards, drum sets, guitars and effects. i also use Reason 10, most times as a sound source. I record in it every so often. Any who I'd like to hear more about your process.

I was just looking up this topic again. I’ve had 10 records lathed which was pretty rough and the website even warned about it. I’m very curious to try out vinyl post. That ones a Flexi disc on a postcard. And you can single order for super cheap. But I haven’t tried it yet.

Hi Landon. Really dig your videos. We almost had our last album pressed to vinyl. Unfortunately, we got caught up dealing with the PledgeMusic fiasco and lack of funding. Luckily, we (or our fans) got most of the money back, but we ran into some other issues while trying to have copies made. We were going through Third Man and even got a couple of test prints, but they were saying 10 songs was going to diminish sound quality so they recommended we cut out a song. There were some tensions in the band, and I didn't want to compromise, so we ended up abandoning the project. I ended up ordering copies on cassette instead, which was way less of a headache, and those are actually selling, so I guess things worked out. Would have been cool to see the vinyl work out, too, but we didn't have enough of a following or support to do so. Best of luck to you and anyone else out there doing their thing! It ain't easy. 🤘

This was sweet! Just been getting into my 424 mkii and it’s been a bit of a long learning curve. I wanted to ask, can’t you record the stereo backing track through 5/6 or 7/8? Then use the other inputs for mono and panned tracks? I’ve been doing this on the mkii but still not really understanding where that signal records to. I think it’s like master bus, but where is it actually going on the tape? Is it duplicated on both channels on both sides of the tape, or first side, or what? Do you know? Cause then when you pan the tracks after recording, wouldn’t that also pan the recorded info from 5/6 and 7/8? I’m prolly just not understanding something. the manual doesn’t go into any depth about this as those inputs are usually dedicated to Fx

For those seeing this video for the first time, some important information: The Tascam 688 and 238 are the ONLY 8 track cassette machines besides a TOA machine that can record ALL 8 tracks at once simultaneously. All others, from Yamaha, Fostex etc.. cannot record all 8. They have 8 tracks but it buses the record ins to two separate 4 track groups.

Who is the company you sent it off to to fix your Tascam 238? I have a 238 with the same problem.

This is just awesome, imagen what you could do with an 8 track portastudio with a built in CD burner on it.. :D

Honestly I just want to make some weird ambient acoustic synth whatever, like uh... Campfire Headphase kinda sound but nowhere near as complex. Would this be good for that? :v
