UArts closing??? // reflections on my experience at art school 🏫🎨
✹ hello friends! ✹
Welcome back to my channel! In today's video I'm discussing the recent closure of BOTH of the colleges I went to. I am often asked is it a good idea to attend art school? And while these campuses were open, I could at least confidently recommend these schools. The landscape of both the art industry and art education continues to rapidly change, and the closure of the schools has really troubled me. I felt the need to discuss my time at these schools.

Просмотров 50621 час назад
✹ hello friends! ✹ Welcome back to my channel! In today's video we're trying out perler bead art! I became interested in this after picking up a cute Kirby magnet from MomoCon, and I wanted to try it out (eventually!) Today's the day I turn my pizza design into perler/fuse bead magic. Also - I refer to these as perler beads, but I didn't realize until halfway through filming this video that per...

Also want to doubly disclaim - I want to clarify that I hold no issues with those who create animation breakdown videos. While criticism may be warranted, it's disheartening to witness the discrepan...

UArts shutting down was so shocking for a variety of reasons. I graduated from there two yrs ago but have a younger cousin who just graduated this year. He told me how his professors were excited and expecting a bigger student body this fall, new hirers would be joining in, my even littler cousin attended UArts’ high school Saturday school program, which is brand new! It just seemed like the school would be expanding, this younger cousin and all her friends that attended this program had UArts as their top choice. And why would they not after a positive experience with the professors (shout out to Lowell!) and in a city with such a bustling creative scene like Philadelphia? Much of the community are suspecting higher management, as you said there’s no arguing how poorly they handle money lol. Both the previous and current president are terribly unpopular among the community. But to shut down soon after the faculty union finally settled on a contract too, after years of them fighting? It’s so extremely suspicious! Where is everyone’s money going if not back into the school, the professors, upgrading the equipment and infrastructure? And who’s spending it? There will be a town hall meeting on Monday. I’m not gonna get my expectations up, but I hope the big questions will be answered. I hope the best for everyone who made this school what it is, who are now left scrambling but deserve so much better
Thank you for answering my questions! I’ve seen so many advertisements for business websites platforms but it always feels nice to just get a down to earth opinion. This was very insightful and will help me to decide where to move my insta business. 💕
It looks so good 😫
thank you!!! :))
absolutly stunnin !!
thank so much!! :D
Great video! I almost never hear anyone touching the topic of how important it is to constantly save money when you're working as an artist. It's crazy how much it can fluctuate 😶
for sure! definitely something that should be discussed with more transparency. when I graduated I was blind sighted to learn how necessary it was to do this
JUST HAD TO COME BACK AND SAY DEFINITELY ENJOY HIT MONKEY U DID YOUR THING.. BEEN BINGE WATCHING SO GOOD.
I really appreicate the answer to the questions! You've been hitting the mark with your videos, and I'll definitely take your word! Keep up the fantastic videos yo!
thanks so much!! happy to hear you enjoyed it! 😊
love the videos
I definitely recommend creating your own avenue as a content creator if you have the drive for it. Sure, the path might be pretty long but it's ultimately worth it in the end. (thats what I believe anyway lol) good luck-I'll be here supporting yours!
Hii! just wanted to say I found your channel recently and really enjoy your videos :) This was a great watch and fun to sketch along to!
thank you!! and thanks for watching, I’m so happy to hear you enjoy them! 🥹❤️
Great video, Nia! Really informative and well presented!
aw thanks so much! 😄
09:54 is when I realized your screen has Sailor Moon transformation on it :D
haha, it’s a little Easter egg!! 😊❤️
Your strawberry turned out so cute! Did you have any issues with the thread not staying in the fabric? I saw some tutorials that said the way one holds the needle can influence that and though “oh maybe it’s more complicated than I thought “
ty!! And yes I did - it had a lot to do with the angle and how much I pulled the needle out of the fabric. it takes a little bit of practice to figure out the best way to hold it but yeah!! I know what you mean 😅
Obsessed I wish I had lighting like this in my apartment
Thank you for taking time to answer all of our questions! This was really informative. I've been debating on going into animation but, it's probably not for me! Can't wait for the next video and I'm excited to see what new projects you'll be working on ❤ I adore your work!
of course! and thank you so much!! I'm glad to hear it was helpful!! 🥰
I love a colorful space! Feels like studio ghibli
love this video & your cutie avocados!!!! 🥑 I was wondering what the model for the Eco tank you got is? I have an HP printer and it keeps stopping mid print and I'm just not happy with it anymore
totally understand!! i use a 2720! (but i'd probably look into getting something newer because of a lack of tech support for my model!)
This is cool!💗
thank you!! ❤
Loved this so much! I saw in your hobby box that you have embroidery floss. It’s pretty similar to punch needle! Maybe try that out! ♥️
Loved this 🥹💞
ty!! thx for watching!!😊❤❤
Glad I was brought to this video. I just graduated film school this month and have had the opportunity to Direct and/or produce 3 short films. I’ve decided I am not able to do short films and get paid for the time being and continue to self fund them for now. I started my own production company and I’m doing what I love. I’ll find a job at some point that might not be my dream but that’s okay.
My journey's been very similar to yours: animation graduate except I've never worked at a studio. I'm grateful for having spent my post graduation years working from home for a personal reason, but it's a relief to see that the studio/professional life wasn't everything they tell you in college. So much time has passed since then and the world has changed a lot... not sure how to put this in this comment but mostly I wanted to let you know I understand what you're going through because we have a lot in common. I'm definitely going to check out your channel bc your artwork is adorable and your demeanor is calming :)
YT randomly served your vid to me and it’s proof the algo is listening 😂 had the exact same thought/push to pursue what I actually cared about after my mom had a heart attack a few years ago, at the same age her mother had a heart attack. Luckily my Mom survived, but man did that make me feel like i have a clear date with death in my future. So I also asked myself what I would regret not doing, and for me that was pursuing a career in animation. Anyway, liking, subscribing, & commenting, because taking a chance on you should be rewarded.
As an adhd creative I LOVE THIS! Though I mainly do illustration or comics my current hobbies are song writing and cross stitching lol😂 on top of my full time job😅
aaa thank you!! and those sound so fun!! i've been wanting do cross stitch for some time now
This reminds me of modoodles here on RUclips. She quit her job in animation and is now doing RUclips and her shop full time. Also I appreciate this video because I chose a non art career (teacher) and I often wonder if I made a mistake. But I love teaching and doing art as a side business is really fulfilling when I don’t compare myself to others. This reminds me that I made the right choice for me and it’s different for everyone. I think you’ve got a great perspective on it Wishing you success in your future projects ✨ Side note your hair looks AMAZING! Giving strawberry shortcake vibes 🍓🌷
Omg this makes me want to pull out my punch needle supplies that I haven't touched for at lease a year haha you've inspired me 😊
aww I’m so happy to hear that!! 🥹 would love to see anything you make!!!
❤❤ love this channel
I LOVED watching this! The anticipation of seeing how the final product would turn out was exciting. Looking forward to following this series. Your work space is sooo cute! 🥰
thank you!!! More to come! :) ❤️
Great video! Really made me at ease from these feelings that come with being unemployed in the animation industry, I wish you good luck on your shop and your independent art 💕 P.S. I also worked on marvel's hit monkey, but I was at mighty animation 👀✌️
wow small world!! thank you, and thanks for watching!
Definately dont move to LA. I graduated grad in 2020 and then I landed a job at mattel in 2022... I got laid off last year, but I got back in luckily, and anyway... I literally ended up homeless within a few months of the lay off, and I only moved because they begged me to. I moved back home and its much better.
geez i'm so sorry, I can't imagine how difficult that must've been. feel like there needs to be some kind of legal protections for things like this; I hear these stories all too often
this resonated with me a lot. i was picking up on a lot of these same things right before i graduated in 2016 so this definitely hit
I'm feeling this so hard -- my layoff for my animation job is in a month and I'm so excited. I'm gonna take a good chunk of time on to focus on having fun with my art
It was so good to get a real life industry professional's perspective on this. Thank you for sharing! I hope you keep making videos like this!
You seem too calm given the collapse of the industry. I'm hopeless because in my specific field I see less than 10 job openings a month, in the whole industry and it doesn't look like it's going to improve.
wishing you all the best! I’m pretty uncertain as well, but I’m also very much ready for new horizons even if they take me beyond animation. I know I’ll land on my feet at some point and so will you! 👏🏾
I'm so glad youtube pushed this video my way, I've just gone through all your videos and absolutely love the vibe. I just hate the circumstances of the video, that is what finally pushed your channel my way 😭 Totally bookmarking Hit Monkey!! I'm happy to see that you didn't take being laid off to heart, in the sense of your own skill. Like you said, being laid-off doesn't reflect what you do at all, just a horrible reflection of what the animation (and gaming) industry is like atm. Keep doing you, I love your style so much!
Just subscribed, you have such a good attitude and outlook, you've made it through a lot and I'm excited to be along for the ride to see how you grow!
you touched on a lot of topics that ive been thinking about lately, this was a wonderful video to have on in the background!
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for listening ❤️
I have been saying this and I will say it again. All of these folks being laid off need to come together to work as a collective to push out these corporations we don't need them we have all of the tech to do it ourselves. You will get laid off again and again. You have a lot of talent together to create just as well as a big studio reach out to one another and build your own company or create your own company with folks who share the same skill set and passion as you.
Your introspection reminds me a lot of my own while actively studying art and design, especially as my dream as a kid was to work within the animation industry too! 💕 I am currently 21 and am studying at my local public university. However, I have been struggling immensely with my academics and uncertainty regarding my career path-which wasn’t on my bingo card as a kid! I think this involves recognizing how much of a disadvantage I am placed at with being a first generation student, growing up in poverty, and discovering the setbacks that my disabilities have regarding being able to effectively work full-time and consistently-especially for such competitive fields as art, animation, and design. It is a tough battle for sure to put it lightly. I believe those experiences help me appreciate how you also had specific expectations working within the animation/art industry, and how you are handling those conceptions being challenged while still acknowledging fulfillment in life beyond the struggles you endured! It inspires me, as I learned that even though I don’t actively participate as passionately nor as often within animation and illustration comparatively to when I was younger, that I am growing to appreciate life beyond them and the idea of turning them into a substantial career. (Though I still feel guilty of it, and I currently am in a sticky situation as my major still listed as art and design.) I hope you are doing well in the meantime, and my apologies for how lengthy this comment has gotten! 💕
