My father, Clarence McNair was a member of 3-3. He told me several war stories only when I asked him. He did not talk about the violence of war but he felt strongly that wars would be much shorter if those who were making war decisions from great distances were on the front lines. His stories were interesting. I asked him about jumping from a plane, thinking it must have been exciting. He didn't like it much, landing was unpredictable and hard, with chances of injury. He mentioned the craziness of smokers who sometimes lit-up while on patrol.....very dangerous. Once at a farmhouse at night he prepared to toss a grenade inside. The pin was pulled and the solid door was ajar. He didn't see the screen door which made a great deal of noise when his hand armed with a grenade smacked against the screen. He had a GSW on Jan. 6th 44 but recovered. He had taken cover behind a rock that was slightly larger than his head. A machine gunner was firing at him from an elevated position. The bullet struck him in the upper back, hit ribs and came out above his waist. I asked him what it felt like to be shot and he explained it felt like someone had driven a pik-axe into his back and the breath was knocked out of him. Dad was awarded a Silver Star for looking after his men. I asked him about how he got his foot wound later that year. That was an interesting story. He was on a ship in a room where weapons were being handed out. He said someone accidentally pulled a pin from a grenade and dropped it to the floor. During the first moments the live grenade was being kicked about. Dad saw where it was , kicked it into the corner of the room and put his foot on it. The blast sent him to the roof of the room. Miraculously, his foot was badly cut and he was hospitalized but a very serious situation was averted. I did ask why he chose these actions and he said, I thought I could contain the blast with my foot. He was right. He was a pretty amazing father, considerate, kind, with a wonderful sense of humour. I just wish I had been more interested in asking him more. Rod McNair

My dad William H (Bill) Berndt served with Gene in Service Company. Dad was in the farmhouse that was hit with that "88" shell. He said he was sleeping and he got up and went outside to take a leak when the shell hit the house... It killed one, wounded 4. And the other story went. Early one morning as they were getting ready to move out, some of his buddies "borrowed" a Jeep. They asked dad if he wanted to ride with them. He decided that he wanted no part of them borrowing that Jeep. He said a mile down the road he came upon them, they hit a landmine, 3 dead. The good Lord did an amazing job looking out for my Pop.

My dad, Clarence (Moose) McNair was lieutenant in the Force. He didn't talk much about his service. He was wounded twice and awarded the Silver Star. I wish I had asked him more questions about his experiences.

This the the cousin of my great uncle, Staff Sergeant John Theodore Gallagher, I am just now understanding more about my great uncle and I had just discover about this poem dedicated to the sentinels of the tomb of the unknown soldier and my great uncle. I had attended the memorial service for him in 2008 when I was three years old and only remember fragments of it however relearning the history of him has been an eye opening experience. Thank you for sharing this poem, I could not find the tape of it at home.

Thank you so much for posting the entire interview! I loved seeing Charlie in Victory Remembered (AMAZING job btw!). I'm always happy when I come across one of his interviews. He's a great storyteller and he's helped be a voice for those who needed to keep ttheir experiences locked away for their own reasons. My grandpa (4-1) joined the FSSF as a replacement, I believe, likely around the time of the breakout at Anzio. I noticed he'd put an asterisks in that chapter of his Burhans book. He never spoke about the war. I've been trying to piece his service together for about a year now. According to my mom, he went to every FSSFA reunion until 1993. He died 6 months later. Looking forward to watching the other interviews you've just posted!

These eternal words sprang from the heart of of Bob Martin, President of the American Rose Society, as part of the centennial of the tomb of the unknown soldier under the auspices of the Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. As one writer for the Society has stated, Martin's poem was “offered to the American people as our generation’s answer to the iconic poem of Word War I, In Flanders Field" -- a poem set to music as a song by Charles Ives. This beautiful poem deserves the same legacy!

What a wonderful tribute to the FSSF. This gentleman is a true hero. He is very humble and well aware of the gravity of the situations he was in. The grateful positive attitude of this man is absolutely wonderful. I’m very happy that he appears to have learned to live with the dark demons that must be in his dreams at night. We all owe so much to him, his brothers-in-arms, and most importantly the ones who did not come home to live a full life. Heartwarming to see the love they all have for their friends that they sought-out their grave sites, no matter what nationality or location. A true bond. Thank you for sharing this wonderful interview and giving us a personal insight into this unique fighting unit!
