Thank you for explaining and demonstrating what not to do. It helps explain what I did wrong that a young gelding I was feeding apples to reared up and clipped my elbow when I ran out of treats. Had I not quickly reacted, backing up, he would have come down on my head. No one ever explained to me the cause of his sudden aggression. I met this horse at 2 hours old and daily until this occurred, at which time, I stopped altogether. This was a friend’s horse and I’d asked numerous horse people why he did this and never got an answer other than “the horse was an a-hole.” Sad for both of us and his owner couldn’t figure out why I quit seeing and doting over him. The bone in my elbow was painful for about 2 yrs. He grew up to bite, kick and attack many, even a 2 yr old toddler who was quickly rescued by her grandmother who was a very experienced horse person (and eventually ended up owning him). They always made excuses for his bad behavior and I only learned through another horse person friend the assaults to adults and other children he committed. Instead of teaching and protecting people, they chose to make excuses and keep his behavior on “the down low”. It would have been more compassionate to have simply taught and explained what you just did in this clip. I always suspected it wasn’t the horse’s fault but the owners and all they permitted to get injured. Thank you, again.

wow that hand feeding horse was really bad, I've seen a lot of that at the barn I used to lease from, since there are so many ppl there it's inevitable that many of them wont know to stand their ground and they teach the horse bad habits. it's really nice to have my own place now where I can supervise what lessons my horse is being taught.

We inherited two horses doing both of these things. They get fed in one large pasture so getting them to back up and give me space has been difficult.

really nice information this will really help me a lot. my pony keeps on trying to eat her feed before i put it in her bin, so i just push her away and let her know that she cant have it yet.
