Shocking! G providing articles (A dollar 3.80 says they're AI) about products they REALLY want to sell you. Ok, ire over (temporarily) Great stuff as usual Lily. I'm putting up a news site I'd really like to see in Discover soon. Also some Kamala Hats! Gonna try some of that Goldie AI backlinks/Reddit/FB/whatever tactic! Don't know why I haven't already, but subbed today. Thanks again.

This is hands down the most useful video I have seen on this subject. One of my sites, no affiliate links, always original content on the niche and all written by me, went from page one to page nowhere almost overnight. And until now, having watched this video, I could never really get my head around why? But taking a step back I can now see it. The site is way too similar to thousands of other sites out there and there is also a lot of date sensitive content that needs to be noindex because although parts of that content may be interesting it is, in reality, not longer relevant in Google's eyes. One thing I did notice is that forums have either not been affected or have actually moved up. I run a large forum with a WordPress front end. The forum has been fine but the front end site dropped. Anyway, thanks so much for this video. It has given me a path to go down where there was none before👍

This is exactly what happened to my business. I run a pop culture website. We’d do news, features and reviews on movies and tv shows mostly. Yes, I’d also post some SEO articles about tv show release dates, but we were mostly doing in depth articles on what was going on in the industry. But this month, our traffic fell off a cliff and I’ve had to let my freelance writers go. I’m basically just doing videos on Facebook and RUclips now…

For me, as a newbie in SEO field it's like a handy brief in "what's and why is going on". I take a look at the update notes and Google recommendations about the content, and it's clear like a sunny day. Mb it's coz I worked in the self education, psychology content and know how you can't do to your reader or viewer. Google trying to be more healthy in the content it's offer. So the SEO itself must maintain the healthy principles and healthy approach to rank higher now. Thanks for your time and experience. I will look forward to your new videos and opinions. As well as I'll look at the older ones. Hope my eng not horrible enough. Take care and stay safe. From Vi with luv (Kyiv, Ukraine).

We are a very niche news website covering aging research and rejuvenation biotech with very few competitors, we dont sell anything (we are a non profit), and we have been producing industry news since 2017. We saw a 90% crash of our traffic since September 2023. We do run some ads, but we barely make anything from them. We follow Google guidelines and use semrush to ensure we meet user experience criteria. For a team of 6 reporters, this crash has been heartbreaking.

Thanks Lily, that was very helpful! It’s crazy to know that some brands can’t survive 1 or 2 years waiting for the traffic to recovery. If you were hit by this update and you think you followed Google guidelines 110%, is it possible that there could have been some stuff that you didn’t follow like a gray area and as a result your site got hit? I know a small publisher that swears he followed Google 110%. But he said he has some HARO links, hmmm.

First person experience doesn't make a content useful, you also have to understand what visitors are looking for. Also it's sad that lots of small good websites where hit and leave space for bad content made by big websites. Not the same rules for everyone. A sitewide algorithm isn't a good one. Thanks for all the information and your time. If you find a travel website that have recovered from that it will be great.

The one thing no one is talking about is Google revenues. Everyone is talking about their own sites. But Google has to make money. Either they are giving up their revenue from niche sites or they figured out a way to either maintain revenue or increase it. We need to answer this question if we want to understand the updates. Their goal is to make money…the don’t care how they do it, they just want to do it!

You should know by now that Google isn't a search engine anymore. It's a narrative control system. If you search for topics that may threaten the establishment, Google will direct you to links/sources that protect the established narrative. Pretty much the entire world is against you.

@lilyray What do you make of the YT video link below on Google Topics API formally known as FLoC by the Engineering Task Force with Josh Karlin from Google Chrome. Note how many times host domain and domain are mentioned. Our agency has been working towards I believe this very digital advertising concept for over a decade mentioned in the video. Websites with domain names that are topic dominate, are helpful content compliant and that signal topical authority with trust maybe what's next in the deprecation of third-party cookies. Makes no sense. What makes Google the expert on any of the billions of topics they serve? Is Google the expert on everything? They must be because they pick nd choose which sites are the most trusted and Google cherry picks (steals) from sites for Google's snippets. But I have to be a board certified doctor to talk about health related topics. We have no right to share information unless we experts. By what standards? I know more about certain health problems than any doctor and I have my experience to support that claim. But I have to prove to Google that I have a degree to be heard? This is discrimination of the highest order. Knowledge and ideas must be evaluated based on the quality of the ideas themselves in the same way good helpful content needs to be evaluated based on the article itself, NOT based on external indicators. Any rational person would agree but this is not how Google evaluates an article or a site. Google can't tell the difference between a Pulitzer prize winning author's article compared to 8-year old child's article compared to an Ai LLM. Google DOES NOT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. Google fills the SERPS with ads when searching for a product above and ahead of any relevant content/information. How is that helpful? Imagine if I started every article with rows of ads and then after about 12 affiliate product ads, I begin the article. But Google does exactly that. Go search for: "best log splitter." Go ahead, make a liar out of me. Google has villified every independent "niche" site because their technology is too stupid to sort them all and determine which sites are helpful, well written and original. Instead of evaluating sites based on the merit of the site itself, they simply tagged them all as worthless and automatically promoted every corporate site, or well known brands/entities. This is not aligned with what they have been preaching. They have repeatedly said if you write for humans, if you write well with original articles, filled with insightful information, they said you will rank well. Don't worry about it. This is not what happened. Google is incapable of determining if an article is well written and helpful, so how can they rank the best content if they don't know the difference? And, why is it acceptable to destroy an independent business or to remove sites from the SERPS who actually have exceptional, original content, because Google is too stupid to know that it's good and they're too lazy to figure it out. The idea that any site that isn't a brand that's been around since the 50s or 80s, is considered spam, and if they have affiliate links, they are automatically worthless. This notion that sn independent site with affiliate links make a site less trustworthy than a big brand like CNN who ranks #1 for the "best leggingsn" is absolute nonsense. It's objectively false to make these type of assumptions. The irony is when you search for any product related term Google fills SERPS with 50% affiliate ads - the very thing they penalize independent sites for. The hypocrisy runs deep here. In fact, every site writing about products use affiliate links. All the big corporations use affiliate links to promote products they are not experts in. Incidentally, the NY Times ranks #2 for the "best leggings." Does that make sense? What pisses me off is when people defend Google or explain reasons why Google has put out this update to combat spammy sites, Ai sites, etc., which I personally support. The error is that Google has simultabeously destroyed the lives of people WHO DON'T DESERVE IT, and I don't hear anybody speaking up for the flaw in Google's evaluation of websites. They have actually tossed the baby out with the bathwater and everyone is defending this act. Is this fair? Is this okay? Google has failed. Google can't determine a good site from a bad site so they created a few basic rules to protect big brands, and everybody who has worked hard to create helpful content as Google has asked them to, they all get destroyed along with the scammers and the SEO jerks who manipulate the system and promote it on youTube. There is zero nuisance here and there's no consideration for the innocent lives being ruined. We all want to gloss over the repurcissions of Google's choices. Google has repeatedly lied to people and they made their algorithm appear to be a wise oracle who could do no wrong. If your site fell out of the top 10, or top 100, the assumption has always been the site owner did aomething wrong. There has been a cult-like following of Google’s algorithm and it continues even though it's been revealed that Google's algorithms are incapable of evaluating content based on the actual merit of the content itself. It can't. This is not my opinion. When you understand that this is true, you then realize that Google's choices for SERPS are a sham, completely random based on criteria external to the article itself. Google has a corporate agenda that has nothing to do with promoting the most helpful content. You don't believe me? You think it's my opinion? Why did Google give parasite SEO sites two months of warning, telling them to fix their parasite SEO problem. These are all big companies, including universities. They got two months warning. They have NEVER done the same to everyone else. They simply treat independent voices like garbage. It's the same divide between the rich and the poor. People need to tell the truth. Please, anybody point out where i lied here promoted my personal. Tell me where i'm objectively wrong. I'll wait.

What I'm deducing from cross-referencing your comments with a lot of the HCU complaining (which honestly feels like whining at this point, but admittedly our agency deals solely in Google Maps SEO so I'm biased) is: The "common wisdom" (argued by John Muller) that Core-linked declined take months to recover because you have to wait for a next core update do not apply to negative classifiers like HCU. Negative classifiers take over a year to recover at a minimum, if you're lucky (something which john explicitly alluded to himself). HCU "recoveries" in march are more likely to be recoveries related to earlier impacts like review updates.

Our current website is 3 years old. We have about 6,000 Posts. We already deleted about 1000 from years prior (we merged our two websites to one, because it was very similar content) and we reworked about 200 more from the ground up. Also improved some UX, made sure, people see we are real humans and so on. We have a community of over 30k on Facebook, 1,500 on Discord and a few hundred on Instagram. Also we always had about 10 to 15 % direct traffic (When getting 80k views per day) Do you think it could also take years for this website to recover? I thought that years to recover is only for those sites who are around for 10 + years and have 10s of thousands of posts. Let me know!! And thanks for the insight!
