Heinrici hot air engine demonstration
I think the most important statement is that they preceeded petrol engines and electric motors, were made in vast numbers, pumped water, drove dentist drills, sewing machines, gramophones, fans and coffee grinders. Known for their quietness, smooth running and long life.

Video taken during setting up but most engines ran at some point during the day, some ran all day. Note the 2 larger engines on wooden frames are replicas of Rev Robert Sterlings original engine, 1816, and the later modified version by the addition of a water jacket to cool the cold side to increase efficiency. This is an annual event.

Victorian automatic candle extinguisher 1840s Patent No1318. These extinguishers, often referred to as snuffer, appeared after the "self consuming wick" of the 1830s were introduced to candles. Prior to that candle wicks required trimming/shortening with wick trimming scissors to prevent smoking.

Yes, it is a water cooled sterling engine. Now wish I'd said that!!! But I'm just a hobbyist, there is so much information, types and configurations to mention. I just wanted to introduce folks to a great engineering piece of history..... and wish I'd said Sterling engine...

Isn't it basically a water cooled sterling engine?

Thanks Raphael, in all the excitement I forgot the word... yes, it displaces the air. Some displacers are filled with wire wool so the air passes through it as well round the outside. This increases the engine power as the heat is held then released by the wire woold on each stroke. This give more efficient heat exchange. The thing many forget or don't know, is these engines were before petrol engines and electric motors!!! So despite low power, they were the domestic work horse.

When the chimney is fitted it can act as an oil lamp, i.e. the pool of wax feeds the wick and allows the light to be turned up to 2 candle power, unique in candles and candle lamps. I believe they did not catch on as being expensive to make, candles were expensive and the jamming of the wick in the hollow candle (a problem I experience with this one when shut down).

Hot-air engine by Hayward-Tyler Ltd (Rider design) at the Sterling Society meet, Hereford UK. The Sterling engine Society met at Hereford water museum 29th September 2024. Dozens of small engines of many designs, some replicas, were displayed and run whilst the museum ran this original enormous beauty. This 1/2 HP Hayward-Tyler Ltd engine is coal fired and run by the museum on special days.

Now make the candle short enough so it fits in the lower casing as a compact unit, and put a wheel and flint striker on the side, and you will see how Ronson Corp. first adopted this idea in 1931, giving birth to the iconic Zippo.

The lamp would originally have been for burning whale oil, which burners very white. Vegetable oils burning were not as bright and used in cheaper lamps (this lamp was clearly owned by someone of wealth). I love the fact that the design puts the clockwork above the oil. The original Carcel design/patent 1800, put the clockwork below the oil in the font necessitating a seal in the base of the font, with its inherent risk of leakage.

This candle lamp is called a Photion, the hollow candle is sprung loaded to ensure it is loaded towards the top to maintain the pool of candle fat, a principle used on the "Palmer" candle lamps of the Victorian era.

Mamod ME1 steam engine circa 1960s driving a "3 beer tin" boat. Amazing what you can do when a poor apprentice with - 3 x 7 pint "party" beer cans, 1 gallon oil can, a bean tin, 6 brass curtain rings and a wire coat hanger, all soldered together. During Covid I found it in the loft and added Radio Control and named it UTOPIA. Happy days.

This 1/3 size model if a Robinson B4 Hot air engine. It is gas fired and drives a dynamo to light the lamp. It will also charge the phone... The original full size B4s drove water pumps, sewing machines, dentist drills, compressed air etc.

The pine wood hull is made by drawing round a Bowman SWALLOW hull plus a rocker bottom. The boiler is Bowman and the engine is single acting with brass bevel gears. The radio control is 27 MHz with the servo operating the rudder, not turning the outboard steam engine.

It is Radio controlled on 4.2GHz planet 2+2 set up. The batteries are under the seat and receiver and servo underneath the footplate. The control valve is on the exhaust port, tapped 3/16 x 40 me thread. Putting it on the exhaust port is easier than breaking into main steam feed, and any small leakage is not an issue at lower pressure.

Lutz made many zany models, many were steam, but this my favourite, being a stationary flame gulper/licker. I bought it less spring, valve and burner on Eb. Made them and added wheels, axels, funnel, drive belt etc to make it into a mobile.

It is from the 1950s Japan. The hull and boiler as thin as paper and flexes with the fingers!! The name LIBERTY I believe is from the Liberty ships supplied by the USA to Britain during WW2, and named to appeal to the US market. Alcohol fired.

This is 10mm single copper pipe connected to a st steel bellows rapped with copper wire. Alcohol fired (I know...a waste!!!). The hull is polished copper from an old water tank. I later added a radio controlled rudder.

1/50 PS. 1950s toy, alcohol burner, 200 to 1000rpm. Since the contraction of the flame is 50% of the stroke, the remaining 50% generates pressure which the relief valve expels.
