I honestly don’t find sympathy with him being afraid since he left a baby to be eaten alive by foxes and didn’t think twice about it and especially since he got a chance and didn’t give his son that same chance. He did that to other people, taking his insecurity out on other people. He dies as a hypocrite.

Those who don't understand why Ivar cried: He cried because there was nobody in the world alive that would hold and love him except for Hvitserk, which reminded Ivar the way his brothers really cared about him and softened him in the end despite his ruthlessness, he grew tired of being a cripple and went out on his own terms just like every other Vikings. If you paid attention, as he aged and matured, he had many regrets such as: killing his brother, his wife, the ancient one, countless tyranny acts to his own village, burning Hvitserks girlfriend...
