People forget that audio professionals are the ones who develop the presets for plugins. There's a reason they're there, they won't apply to every possible scenario every time but they'll get you REAL close

What program is that with the presets?

Your bottom snare mic may work great for the bottom snare but that far away is also going to pick up the kick, and possibly everything else. Your frequency selection is all arbitrary. Every drum, mic, and room, tuning etc are all different and it’s best to look for the fundamental of the transient and boost there. Those are the drums natural punch and crack/attack frequencies. As far as micing goes, I don’t know anyone who just records only the snare drum when recording a drum kit, so your approach to micing may work for demonstration purposes on a RUclips channel, but are lacking severely if trying to mic an entire kit. Phase between top and bottom snare mics always needs to be checked. Also if micing up an entire kit the bleed from hihats, overheads, and kick along with any eq/processing for those channels will dramatically affect the snare tone as well. But if you want to record just your solo snare drum and nothing else your approach might work.

this is the kind of video i’ve been wanting to see. it’s unfortunate that groups like bethel music turned their snare tone into a profitable thing - asking people to join an online production course or just overall being super vague and mysterious about it. that church already brings in millions from their records and touring, why do we have to sign up for a course?

Why should I always flip the phase on the bottom snare mic?

Sounds solid! It's worth mentioning that the raw snare track was good, too. Some people's biggest struggle is the fact that their snare or snare mic'ing sounds bad to begin with.

Great video. Love seeing different signal chains! One suggestion (nothing to do with the actual mix but in your video recording) dip your dialogue mic just a bit during the listening examples. The background room noise interferes a great deal with hearing proper details of the changes made.

Wow, sounds pretty good. Using a lot of presets. But that's smart, if they just sound good, why not use them. I don't have that UAD Hitsville Mastering EQ. How can I achieve similar results without that plugin? What does it do? Looks like its boosting lows and highs.

Before you boost or cut it's worth running a frequency analyser on each tom just to be really sure where your fundamental note and your snap is located.
