Mapping Radiation At 30 Stations On The London Underground

I got sent a radiacode 103 pocket gamma spectrometer and in this video I talk about how it works and use it to detect radon gas on the London Underground. Radon is a radioactive gas that seeps out of the earth and accumulates in underground areas. The London Underground doesn’t have dangerous level of radon as it gets good airflow but the detector is sensitive enough that we can pick up a spect...

Irradiated Salt Is Weird
Просмотров 157 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Does irradiated salt become radioactive? Surprisingly, no. Only neutron radiation can make materials radioactive, so this salt is safe. The irradiation gives the salt an unusual orange hue, not due to impurities but due to defects in its crystal lattice called F-centres. These defects alter the salt's color by affecting its molecular orbitals. In this video, we'll explore the fascinating proper...

    The only activated salt I have worked with was so screaming hot that the tiny vial was in a pig larger then we could carry. We used it as an open source for a decontamination exercise. Due to the short half life similar to technetium 99m generator, contaminated items/rooms could be reused after 10 halflives. We used activated NaCl in a solution of water where we diluted it until we had our concentration and dose rate for the exercise. The water was clear. The reason we used NaCl was due to the medical isotope shortage of 2009, but since we had access to a reactor we used we had the NaCl activated. The short half life was problematic because we had to get the salt irradiated and transported at a particular time so that it would be used before the activity was gone. To increase this time I am sure that the salt was well irradiated. I never saw it in crystal format because it was too hot in terms of its gamma radiation. During dilution we opened the pig and the sample lid with rubber tongs where we then used a pipet to add distilled water as the vial was still in its pig. Big problem when you talked about the solid state battery, the half life is way too short, and the gamma radiation emitted would be extraordinary. The salt you are using has been activated, but is no longer at the higher energy level? Very interesting video. You would not eat any salt that is currently activated.

    hello, keep in mind that measure of dose rate at contact with a geiger are always false as the geiger pancake is highly sensitive to beta & alpha and much less to gamma. So the reading will always be higher than reality. A geiger isnt meant to give dose reading at close range but rather the ambiance dose rate. And to have max precision it should be measured on Césium 137 ( if calibrated on Cs137). Still measuring at contact can tell you if an objetc is radioactive or not and if its a "hot" source or not . And also a rough idea how dangerous the sample can be. So the kind of samples you have causes no threat.

    I have a question, in terms of purely looks what ratio would you need to do to get something to look the same, doesn't need to be chemically accurate. I'm planning on making bases for my warhammer models and I was going to get the simulated soil but the import costs since I'm in sodding yorkshire it's like with you it's more than the cost of the actual soil. I assume the main 4 I'll need for the look and texture is the volcanic rock powder, red iron oxide, black iron oxide and white silica sand.

    Great channel!! neverything i was looking for. I have a question regarding all of this. If Salt was placed under lets say linen/cloth and if the strongest form of radiation from the sun lets say....lets say 50x our suns radiation. Without the cloth being burned or harmed......can that salt leave an imprint of some sort on the cloth? if not from the salt alone, what if the salt was mixed with water under the cloth, would there be an imprint from that burst of energy? Thank you.

      @@Curiosity_lab Oh to make a light then use a photovoltaic cells? Well it's nice, but I thought of collecting the beta particles straight off, and then turning them into power without any light. My idea would be to use some transistor or diode or anything like that, which has a P N junction point and is made for collecting electrons and turning them into electricity

      Oh right yeah, in my latest video about Martian concrete I used a PIN photodiode to detect alpha decay, might work for beta too. I wasn’t trying to generate power though so I was giving it a reverse bias voltage to widen the band gap so it could detect higher energy particles than Uv light

    Can you try this with a few cubes of concrete with iron rebar reinforcement? I really want to know how iron oxide content in mars-crete affects the substance. The block didn't multiply the radiation per-say, but I wonder if its poor showing was due to Bremsstrahlung from the metal particles. Probably not, but its a line of inquiry all the same.

    One more thing you should have done was to let the Mars crete and the moon crete cure in a vacuum chamber to simulate the atmospheric pressures! That is going to make a load of difference on the effects of the curing process, its actually easier than you think to adjust the pressure inside the chamber to be as close to the martian atmosphere as possible , and the moon's for that matter also! Just saying , take care and let me know if you are planning to make a go of it!

    Fun experment. Really fun. I love the enthusiasm for in-situ resource building, and do wish there was more going on here on Earth. Fun.. But.. quick question Why would we be bringing any building materials from Earth, ever? Theres a lot of rocks floating around. A lot of rocks with a lot more metals present then easily reached by surface mining Earth. And we already know that Solar Sails and Moth Drives work so the only fuel is getting a small probe to the astroids they can power themselves back by using the sun. All in all it just seems a bit backwards to not use astroids and in-situ materials now, like today for Earth based projects no less in-situ materials and astroids for a future Martian or Lunar base. Its still good to use in-situ materials as free and here is always better then not here and slightly less then free, and Luna is a great place to practice for all sorts of further exploration with its low gravity and close proximity. But. I mean. Seriously why would you question getting materials from Earth at the end?

    • @Curiosity_lab
      @Curiosity_lab 3 месяца назад

      we are nowhere near ready to be be mining asteroids or mars to process resources like metals and glass without having a well established outpost there. The initial base will require a large amount of building materials from earth unavoidably to get up and running. But there is room for discussion for how much radiation shielding will be needed if they can find a suitable cave or use the Martian ground in another way like the marscrete.

    🤔 so, since rather than heating irradiated salt to restore its lower energy state, it can instead be dissolved in water (requiring no nec addl energy input), presumably, that’s where it would then dump its excess trapped energy, heating the water 🤔 I’m severely curious how much energy we’re storing in stuck orbitals / I have zero frames of reference to even guess but would love to know on a gauge of degrees increase, per unit water, per unit salt …🧐….
